Saint Eunan's Cathedral of St. Eunan and St. Columba
Cathedrals always stand on top of the list when it comes to visiting a new city and doing all the tours related to it, they always have a different kind of atmosphere and a different decoration that keep all the visitors mesmerized.
Check out this video of Saint Eunan's cathedral in Letterkenny, County Donegal. It is an impressive Cathedral based in this Donegal Town and overlooks the people of Letterkenny as they go about their daily lives.
The Letterkenny Cathedral was opened in 1901 and it is built in a Victorian neo Gothic style. It has some lovely stained glassed windows, flying buttress and carvings all around the cathedral itself.
The interesting thing about St Eunan's Cathedral is that no matter from where you are approaching Letterkenny, you will manage to see the tall spire of it greeting you; coming from the east, the west, the north or the south, it will all be the same and you will be greeted in the same way.
Saint Eunan's Cathedral was completed in the 20th century and not in the 14th as some people think and there were eleven years between the formation of the Cathedral Building Committee in 1890 by then Bishop Raphoe and the opening of the cathedral in 1901.
The cathedral moved through a good history that was related to the plan of building it; back in 1830's Dr Patrick McGettigan caused a parish church to be built in the same location as the current cathedral and before that there had been a church on the Glencar Road. Bishop Daniel McGettigan (later Archbishop) had plans drawn up for a cathedral, his idea was to build the tower first which would stimulate the building of the rest. The plan for building the cathedral has been kept in the minds of the bishops afterwards until in the 19th century when lots of people were willing to provide financial support and many of the cathedral's treasures are already gifts of individuals.
Saint Eunan's Cathedral is also known as the cathedral of St. Columba and this was built at a cost of over £300,000. One of the best things ever said about this cathedral was by Bishop O'Donnell's Sermon who said that the cathedral was intended to be an intellectual and spiritual edification for the people. It would gladden their hearts, and it would elevate their ideals, it would bring back to them the glorious memories of the past, and infuse into their souls a Christian manliness to make them noble, wise, brave and good... to conserve that spirit they would put into their Cathedral a stone from every fallen shrine in Donegal and they would have in the Cathedral an altar or a window or a tablet to every patron saint of every parish in the diocese.
Saint Eunan's Cathedral which was designed by William Hague F.R.I.A. of Dublin, and it is built of white Mountcharles stone. While being in Letterkenny county Donegal, we went to see this beautiful old Cathedral and experience the whole place through our drone, and it felt amazing to see the town from above and the everyday life of those people living in it.
Letterkenny is actually named The Cathedral Town for the sake of Saint Eunan's Cathedral and it is the largest town to be placed in county Donegal. Letterkenny lies on the River Swilly in east Donegal and it started back in the 17th century as a market town during the plantation of Ulster (

County Donegal is known to be a county of Ireland that is located in the province of Ulster, and it is named after the town of Donegal that is located in the south of the county. There are different counties in Ireland that one could visit and check all the historical buildings and touristic attractions that are found in every single one of them and which always attract a good number of tourists to them - we included!
This was one of the trips that we have done to one of the most famous cathedrals in Ireland and which carries a great history behind and which also carries views from all the different directions over the town of Letterkenny.
You should definitely plan a trip to Letterkenny, county Donegal, at some point and go to check Saint Eunan's Cathedral and the beautiful inside out this cathedral is - we enjoyed looking at it all from the outside and we also loved coming to the inside to check the interiors and the parts it carries from history.

Letterkenny; The Cathedral Town - County Donegal Ireland
Letterkenny is a town in County Donegal, in the Republic of Ireland. Its a nice town with some great restaurants and plenty of historic sites to see in Donegal County. Its a good stop off point or place to book a Hotel to see the rest of the area. We had a great day in the town and visited it many times for weekends and days out.
Letterkenny is considered the most populous city in county Donegal as well as being the largest, it lies on River Swilly in east Donegal and it is closest to the city of Derry, which both are considered a regional economic gateway.
Looking back at the history of Letterkenny town, we will find that it started back as a market town in the 17th century during the Plantation of Ulster. Letterkenny was the original home of Oatfield Sweet Factory, the confectionery manufacturer, but it was closed and the building was knocked down in 2014. There are several things to be visited in Letterkenny that include restaurants, historical places, and the cathedral.
One of the top visited places in Letterkenny is St. Eunan's Cathedral which is also sometimes referred to as Cathedral of St. Columba. We have been to this cathedral before and walked all around and inside it to discover its beauty. One of the interesting things that we managed to discover is that this cathedral could be seen from all the different directions of the city when one is approaching it (
Most of those notable buildings that are found in Letterkenny were built back in the early 1850's and sometimes even earlier - the tallest of these buildings is St. Eunan's Cathedral, but the completion of this building was done in 1901. One of the other significant buildings that are located in Letterkenny is St. Eunan's College which is a three-storey castelated structure with four round towers at each corner of the building, this was constructed in the Edwardian version of the neo-Hiberno-Romanesque style.
From the other famous places that are found in Letterkenny is the Market Square and there are some other significant buildings which could be found in Mount Southwell Terrace there, just off Castle Street. Donegal County Museum is also located in Letterkenny town on the High Road, it was built back in 1843 in the neo-Tudor style and is also considered one of the old buildings that one have to check while being in Letterkenny for the history that it carries in its look.
Recently, there were different new style buildings which were built in Letterkenny, but we all have to agree that some of these buildings are also notable and are designed in a different kind of way. These buildings include the new Letterkeny Town Council Offices which is locally known as The Grasshouse.
In every town or city you tend to visit, you will always find what might interest you and since we visited Letterkenny before, we have to say that these were from the notable things and buildings which we loved passing by and found how different they appeared to be.
There are some places to visit while being in Letterkenny, such as having a walk by the River Swilly and of course visiting the famous St. Eunan's and St. Columba Cathedral, and then you will have to pass by the Letterkenny Regional Cultural Centre, Donegal County Museum, Newmills Corn and Flax Mills, Letterkenny Town Park, Ballymacool Town Park, and you could also pass by the Century Cinemas if you have the time to do so.
Moving a little bit further, there are other things that could be done in county Donegal, some of them are close to Letterkenny which you could visit during the same day and some could be postponed to later day trips you might go for. One of the top suggestions for the places to visit in county Donegal is Grianan of Alieach which is a beautiful stone fort ringfort ( or else visiting Donegal city itself and getting to check the attractions that are found in it (
People are always different and who might be more in love with visiting museums and checking churches from the inside will not be the same as those who might be more interested with the idea of checking the old buildings of the city, walking in the streets, and walking by the river if there is one which the city lies on - in Letterkenny all these choices are available, making it possible for all the types of people to do any of these things.
If you are considering a new place or town to visit in Ireland then Letterkenny in county Donegal is one of the different options that you have where there are different things that could be done and different places that could be visited, we definitely recommend it - there are also some hotels there if you are considering the idea of staying there for a day or two and even trying their restaurants.

Saint Eunan's College, Boys secondary school Letterkenny, Co Donegal Ireland.
Saint Eunan's College was founded as a boarding school in 1906 by the then Bishop of Raphoe, Patrick O' Donnell. Originally intended as a minor seminary, it was designed to prepare students for the Roman Catholic priesthood. Diocesan colleges became an increasingly popular feature at the time and were designed to give the best possible Catholic education to boys of every class.
The student population expanded in the 1920s and it was necessary to build a new extension to the College in the early 1930s. The current recreation hall was built in 1958 and the science block in 1968. The College Chapel was designed by J.J. Robinson, the architect of Galway Cathedral. It was completed in 1961 at a cost of £42,000.[3]
The 'new building' was opened in 1979 to cater for the 500 students enrolled at the time. Due to the growth of other second level schools in the area the number of boarders dropped extensively and in 1992, the boarding wing was finally shut down. Saint Eunan's College continues to this day as a Catholic School under the trusteeship of the Bishop of Raphoe.
The school currently serves approximately 900 students from Letterkenny and its surrounding area, and is one of the few remaining all-male schools in the north-western part of Ireland. The president, since 2009, is Christopher Darby and the vice principal, since 2010, is Mary Cunningham.
In 2007, the school came to the attention of the national media. Retailers were urged not to sell eggs and flour to students following a spate of attacks on passing cars.[4]
In 2009, Christopher Darby became the first lay person to become president of the college, taking over from Father Michael Carney.[5]

Saint Eunan's College (Irish: Coláiste Adhamhnáin) is an all-male voluntary Roman Catholic secondary school in County Donegal, Ireland. Located in the Glencar area of Letterkenny, it is an imposing three-storey structure resembling a castle, and is known as the castle on the hill.[1] It was designed by renowned Irish architect Thomas Francis McNamara. Noted also for the peculiar nature of its architecture, with four turreted round towers and flying buttresses modelled on the nearby Cathedral, it is divided by a capacious central courtyard, adjoined to an immense stone chapel and home to some unusual flora, fauna and fungi, completed by the conspicuous presence of a large monkey puzzle tree on its front lawn. Named after the Abbot of Iona Saint Eunan, a native of Donegal and patron saint of the Diocese of Raphoe, it celebrated its centenary in 2006.[2] Saint Eunan's College is a prolific sporting institution, having produced numerous footballers who have gone on to play for the Donegal senior football team at the highest level of the game. Current Donegal captain Michael Murphy and former captain Neil Gallagher, who led the team to the 2007 National Football League title, are among these. Among the current staff are All-Ireland winning Gaelic football All Star Colm McFadden, football manager Gary McDaid (currently of Glenswilly), football manager and former Donegal selector Mickey Houston and Ollie Horgan, who has managed Finn Harps and the Republic of Ireland national schoolboy football team.

Cathedral Square, Letterkenny, County Donegal had a major facelift in 2006. The layout was changed, flowers and trees were planted and a new Celtic cross was the centre piece. Saint Eunan's Cathedral, Loreto Secondary School, Conwall Parish Church and the Bishop's Palace are all located in this area of the town.

St Eunan's Cathedral, or the Cathedral of St Eunan and St Columba as it is also known, is a cathedral in the parish of Conwal and Leck, part of the Diocese of Raphoe. Built between the years of 1890 and 1900, the cathedral is found in Letterkenny, County Donegal in Ireland.
The gateposts at the entrance to St. Eunan's Cathedral have carvings showing the year the cathedral was begun, 1891 (the left hand gatepost) and the year the cathedral was completed, 1901, (the right hand gatepost). To the left of the main door is a statue of St. Columba (Colmcille) which was donated by Mrs. Cornelia Adair of Glenveigh Castle, the generous and kindly widow of the cruel landlord, John Adair.

The Ordination took place on Sunday June 30, 2013 in St. Eunan's Cathedral Letterkenny of Ballintra native, Rev. Fr. Jonathan Flood.
He was joined by parishioners, family members and friends at the ceremony at which the Bishop of Raphoe, Dr. Philip Boyce was chief celebrant.
Father Flood returns to Ballintra on Sunday evening 10.30pm for Benediction in St. Brigid's Church, Ballintra.
His first Mass will take place on Monday, 1st July at 7pm in St. Brigid's Church, Ballintra and everyone is welcome.
He will celebrate Mass in St. Eunan's Cathedral on Friday, 5th July at 7.30pm
