International Folklore Festival Cismigiu Park in Bucharest:
“Music and Traditions in Cismigiu” International Folklore Festival:
Cismigiu Park in Bucharest will host a new edition of Music and Traditions in Cismigiu International Folklore Festival this weekend. Over 2,000 artists, orchestras, brass bands, folk groups, and craftsmen will gather downtown Bucharest between June 24 and June 25 for Romania’s largest folklore festival.
The event kicks off on Friday, June 24, with a parade of Romanian and international folk costumes which will follow the route Romanian Athenaeum – Calea Victoriei – Cercul Militar National – Regina Elisabeta blvd. – Cismigiu Park.
The Bucharest Mayor’s Office, via CreArT – the Bucharest City Hall’s Centre for Creation, Art and Tradition organizes, between June 24 and 26, the fifth edition of the “Music and Traditions in Cismigiu” International Folklore Festival. The event will kick off in Friday, June 24, with a Romanian and international folk costumes’ parade, along the route: Romanian Athenaeum (George Enescu Square) – Calea Victoriei – Military Circle – Regina Elisabeta Boulevard – Cismigiu Park (the State Archive entrance).
The festival includes three great sections: folk shows, artisans’ fairs (40 huts where Romanian traditional products and artefacts will be on offer) and a traditional cuisine area. “By this edition of the International Folklore Festival, we wish to bring, once again, before the public in Bucharest traditions from all regions of Romania and from elsewhere. Our aim is not only to recapture the identity of the village in the urban space, but also to integrate genuine tradition in the wide European cultural circuit,” Claudia Popa, director of the festival, stated, quoted by Mediafax. The programme is a varied one: Romanian and international folk ensembles, ensembles representing ethnic minorities and national communities, reputed artists, brass bands and children’s bands. The cultural project also includes creative workshops for children, an ethno-cinématheque, as well as carriage and pony rides in specially-set up areas. The manifestations will take part throughout the festival, between 10am and 10pm, and the public’s entrance is free. The “Music and Traditions in Cismigiu” International Folklore Festival is the only event of its kind in Southern Romania, bringing before the public over 1,000 artists, in a national and international celebration of true value.
FRANCE: TOULOUSE: FANS GATHER FOR ENGLAND V ROMANIA MATCH
Eng/French/Nat
Nearly two thousand police have been deployed in Toulouse for the World Cup soccer match between England and Romania.
Thousands of fans have begun gathering in the city square ahead of the game, but only around five thousand of them (5,300) actually have tickets.
Authorities want to avoid a repeat of last week's scenes in Marseille after the England/Tunisia game where clashes between fans and local North African immigrant youths left 50 injured and dozens arrested.
As part of the security measures, British police identified four known troublemakers in a Toulouse bar who were then deported.
French police are taking no chances with the English and Romanian fans arriving in the French city of Toulouse.
Armed police have been keeping a watchful eye at the main railway station since before dawn.
They're part of a force of nearly two thousand (1,800) police being brought to Toulouse for the game.
The French authorities are determined there won't be any replay of the violent clashes after England played Tunisia a week ago in Marseille.
Fighting between fans and local North African immigrant youths left 50 injured and dozens arrested.
Helping with the clampdown are the British police who identified four known trouble makers, some with previous convictions for football violence, in a bar.
All four were deported from France without appearing before a court - under emergency measures introduced for the World Cup.
When they arrived back in England, they were furious at being expelled without having done anything wrong.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I was drinking in a bar, they come, grabbed me, put me in a police van and then to the station and deported.
Question: What did they say at the station then?
Answer: Nothing. But I haven't been, I haven't been charged, I've had nothing wrong, nothing told to me whatsoever.
Question: You seem quite upset about the way you've been treated?
Answer: Well... what do you expect, when you haven't done anything - you get deported.

So far the crowds have been peaceful.
English fans gave the main square in Toulouse a carnival atmosphere as excitement mounted before the game.
This was in stark contrast to Sunday's night's violence where English
fans damaged cars and taunted police.
These supporters are keen to distance themselves from the behaviour of the hooligans.
They call themselves the real England fans with painted flags of St George on their faces and plenty of football songs to add to the mood.
Some of the few Romanians who have made it to Toulouse joined in the revelry without any trouble.
Police kept their presence low key but visible in the town square.
At the stadium bus loads of riot police arrived.
The Mayor of Toulouse is adamant his city will not be hosting a riot as well as a football match.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
What happened last night should be maintained, there is not much alcohol and a strong police presence in the streets, very mobile, with instructions to intervene at the first sign of trouble. For example, last night, three young men shouted insults at the police and they were held for several hours just for doing that - provocative people like that should be stopped and sent away.

Many fans without tickets are still hopeful of securing a seat on the black market, which has prompted fears that English fans could end up amongst Romanian fans.
However, police are taking comfort from the small number of Romanian fans who have come to Toulouse for the game.
And a security cordon will be thrown up around the stadium as part of
from congregating outside the stadium.
