St. Gereon's Basilica is a Roman Catholic church in Cologne, Germany, dedicated to Saint Gereon, and designated a minor basilica on 25 June 1920. The first mention of a church at the site, dedicated to St. Gereon, appears in 612. However, the building of the choir gallery, apse, and transepts occurred later, beginning under Archbishop Arnold II von Wied in 1151 and ending in 1227.
It is one of twelve great churches in Cologne that were built in the Romanesque style. St. Gereon has a highly irregular plan, the nave being covered by a decagonal oval dome, 21.0 m long and 16.9 m wide, completed in 1227 on the remains of Roman walls, which are still visible.
It is the largest dome built in the West between the erection of the Hagia Sophia in the 6th century and the Duomo of Florence in the 15th century. Ernst Seifert built an organ there in 1898. In the 20th century, the architect Andreas Dilthey worked on its interior.

Die Ursprünge der im Stadtteil Altstadt-Nord gelegenen Kirche reichen bis in die spätrömische Zeit zurück. So haben viele Menschen hier im Laufe der Jahrhunderte ihre Spuren hinterlassen und die innere und äußere Gestalt des Baus immer wieder verändert: Römer und Franken, die Gemeinschaft der Stiftsherren, unzählige Pilger auf dem Weg zum heiligen Gereon und heute unsere Pfarrgemeinde, deren Gotteshaus dieser „altehrwürdige“ Bau geworden ist.
Bereits in der 2. Hälfte des 4. Jhs. n. Chr. wurde im Bereich des Gräberfeldes nordwestlich der römischen Stadt ein Ovalbau errichtet, der heute noch den Kern der Kirche bildet. An der Nord- und Südseite dieses elliptischen Baus befinden sich jeweils vier kleinere und heute noch sichtbare Konchen, im Osten schloss sich dagegen eine größere Zentralkonche an. Die Funktion dieses Ursprungsbaus ist bis heute noch nicht geklärt. Die Umwandlung in eine christliche Kirche müsste allerdings spätestens in fränkischer Zeit erfolgt sein, da bereits um 590 Gregor von Tours eine Basilika vor den Toren Kölns erwähnt, in der die Märtyrer der heiligen Thebäischen Legion verehrt wurden.
Unter Erzbischof Anno fand in den Jahren 1067-69 die erste große Umbauphase statt. Die spätrömische Zentralkonche im Osten wurde abgerissen und durch einen Langchor mit darunter liegender Krypta ersetzt. Weitere Baumaßnahmen sind zwischen 1151 und 1156 durch Erzbischof Arnold von Wied belegt, in deren Zuge der Langchor durch eine turmflankierte Apsis erweitert wurde. In den Jahren 1219-1227 schließlich wurde der antike Ovalbau in den zehneckigen Bau (Dekagon) integriert, der der Kirche auch heute noch ihre äußere Gestalt verleiht.
Auch im weiteren Verlauf wurde das Gotteshaus mit zusätzlichen Bauelementen und zahlreichen Kunstwerken ausgestattet. Dazu gehören die Errichtung der Taufkapelle (1242-1245) und der Sakristei (1315-1319). Unter der Ausstattung besonders hervorzuheben ist das Bodenmosaik aus staufischer Zeit mit Szenen aus dem Alten Testament rund um Samson und David, das im 17. Jahrhundert vom Langchor in die Krypta verlegt wurde. Ebenfalls in der Krypta befindet befindet sich ein Altaraufsatz aus Kalkstein aus der Zeit der Renaissance, der eine Kreuzigungsszene zeigt und auf einem romanischen Altartisch angebracht ist.
Ein Bombentreffer während des zweiten Weltkriegs beschädigte vor allem den Kuppelbau im Nordwesten schwer. Die Wiederherstellung des Gebäudes gestaltete sich allerdings äußerst kompliziert, doch seit 1984 können im Dekagon von St. Gereon wieder Gottesdienste gefeiert werden. ( )

Groß St. Martin is one of twelve Romanesque churches in Cologne. Thanks to its massive tower, the church is also one of the most imposing, and until the completion of the cathedral, it was one of the most important symbols of Cologne. Even today, the tower of Groß St. Martin rises over the houses in the old district and its silhouette is a distinctive feature of Cologne's skyline.
A first church was built here in the tenth century, founded by the archbishop of Cologne, Bruno the Great. The church was built at the Rheinvorstadt, a small island in the Rhine that was shortly after joined to the mainland when a tributary of the Rhine was filled in.
The current building, dedicated to Saint Martinus, was constructed between 1150 and 1250 for the Benedictine order, after the earlier church was destroyed by a fire that ravaged the whole neighborhood. In the fifteenth century the original spire was replaced by a taller version.
The exterior of the church is dominated by its massive tower, with four turrets at each corner. The design is Romanesque, with narrow windows and heavy masonry. Its hulking mass is lessened somewhat thanks to arcades around the apses and architectural details, especially noticable on the small turrets.
During the first century AD, this was the site of a Roman palaestra, a complex used for sports training. The following century, the Romans built a large warehouse here. Remains of both structures were found under the crypt of the church.

At the place where an old apostle's church stood just outside the city wall on the road to Aachen, the archbishop of Cologne Pilgrim ordered after 1021 to build a three-nave basilica and a convent adjoining it. But it was only after a fire in 1198 that the church received its present form, as can be seen in the depiction of the Mercator Plan of 1571. After the fire, the building was begun, to which Aposteln owes its importance, the most mature and most impressive three-choir choir in Cologne, one of the most fascinating architecture charts.
In contrast to the plan of the Latin cross, in which a straight long house in the head area is crossed by a straight transept at right angles, as in St. Aposteln in the west, at the three-conch choir three equal apses on the sides of a square to each other set that the shape of a cloverleaf results in the floor plan, which is why this solution is also called shamrock choir. This results in the east at the site of the choir, a building with its own center and equivalent side panels.
After the church is also the third oldest high school in Cologne, originally founded in 1860 in this street, named after the apostle church. The church fell gradually, had to be closed in 1822 because of dilapidation and was soon restored. Until 1891 extensive renovations took place. During the Second World War, the church was destroyed and only a few years ago, the final restoration of all parts was completed. Also, a forgotten, buried crypt was restored.
The number of the twelve apostles, the patron of the basilica, can also be found in the twelve pillars on which the church is founded.
For centuries St. Aposteln was a canon monastery. Only in 1802 after secularization did the parish take over the church. Pilgrim, the founder of the basilica, was praised by the Abbot of Reichenau for his efforts to unite mathematical speculation and heavenly harmony in the praise of God. This gift of Pilgrim shows itself in the building of the basilica, a complete work of perfect harmony. At the same time it is a constant demand for those who proclaim the praise of God at this Basilica, often in the language of music.
