Castletown River Dundalk [ORIGINAL] Thomascow
A little jig put together for short slide show, pics from google images, this is a tidal river, My grandmother once lived in St' Nicholas Ave., the river ran to the back of her house, as a tiny tot, I played out her back, one day I decided to hop over the wall & explore, what a shock, the drop on that side was very steep, & the field was a complete swamp, I practically vanished, still do not remember to this day how i got back, never forget the pong., My chord layout to this jig.

Raven on old Windmill in Dundalk co. Louth Ireland
From The Camera of Peter Campbell
Peter Campbell died at the age of 53 in Dundalk Ireland on the 5th of May 1979.
Among the legacy of memories he left behind was a collection of short films he made between the mid 1960s
to early 1970s.
This video contains footage of an Armagh pilgrimage to Lourdes from about 1965
Comprising mainly of family members and some of his friends and neighbours mainly from the Father Murray Park and Saint Nicholas Avenue areas of Dundalk these films were typical of home movies of the period with poor quality footage and stilted action shots being very much evident.
Nevertheless they remain a little time capsule of events and people some of whom are no longer with us.
The video was made some years ago principally for viewing by family members and a few friends .
History of Dundalk Famine Graveyard
This graveyard at Fairhill / Killally was established in 1853 and continued in use until 1905. It was utilised primarily for those persons who died within the workhouse (now demolished) on the Ardee Road This graveyard lies adjacent to the roadway at Sidella and has a noticeably uneven surface, the result of the practice of burying coffins no deeper than 18 inches below the surface.A spokesperson for the association said: “The people buried here at present are neglected in death just as they were in life. We would like to afford them some dignity by restoring the graveyard, erecting a modest and appropriate memorial together with road signage to ease access for the public.”
The Famine Graveyard was the burial ground in Dundalk for famine victims of all denominations.
Unlike other graveyards, this cemetery has no headstones or any symbols depicting the burial plots of the men, women and children buried there. The individual or the family’s last place of rest is not marked. Dundalk Famine Graveyard at Killally is a unique historic cemetery. Its peaceful location is two miles from Dundalk off the Ardee Road. At the junction with the Heynestown Road turn left down a lane.
The cemetery was opened in 1852 to cater for the increasing number of Famine victims and remained in use until 1900. It was no longer used for burials and remained neglected and overgrown. In 1998 the local volunteers started to clean the over growth from the cemetery.
In 2017 the group undertook to clear the old cemetery walls of trees, briars, ivy and weeds. Their hard work has revealed the need to refurbish the existing walls. An old stile was also discovered in the clean-up which was an old route used by Church goers. It remains in very good condition.
Dundalk Famine Graveyard Association have opened a GoFundMe account to try to raise funds for the restoration of the Dundalk Famine Graveyard.
An appeal has been made for people to give whatever they can to assist in the maintenance and upkeep of the graveyard.
