Singapore's St John's Island: from quarantine to leisure destination | The Islands That Made Us
Singapore's St John's island carries a grim past - it used to be one of the largest quarantine stations of the British empire, where people coming down to Singapore would have to stay for a short while before they were allowed onto the mainland.
The island then went on to be an opium treatment centre, followed by a drug rehabilitation centre.
Today, the idyllic St John's island houses holiday chalets, where Singaporeans can escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

ABOUT THE SHOW: Up till the 1970s, Singapore's southern islands had vibrant island communities with unique identities. But today, names like Pulau Tekukor and Pulau Seringat have become largely unfamiliar to Singaporeans. Likewise, while reclamation has increased Singapore's land area by 25% in the last 200 years, some islands like Pulau Seking have been merged with other islands, and their names are now confined to history. But there is still much to be learnt from the 40-plus islands that make up Singapore today, and the people passionate about them.

Sharing video highlights/vlog of our St.John Island/Lazarus Island family escapade.
Transport: from Marina South Pier station, just take ferry alight at St.John Island. Estimated 18-21mins travel time. Ticket price 15sgd for adult, and 12sgd for children. Don’t throw away your tickets since its intended for roundtrip fare.
See tickets here for booking including the schedule: (if you’re going there on a long weekend, better book online in advance. If regular days, you can book directly at their booth just outside the Marina South Pier Station)
Walk: if you plan to stay in the beach part (Lazarus Island) you still need to walk around 15mins from St.John island.
Things to consider/bring:
1. Foods/drinks - no stall or vendo machine in the island, so bring all your cooked foods/snacks and brings lots of water.
2. Mosquito repellant - its a must, there are lots of mosquitos at times (depends on the season).
3. Toiletries - they have shower area there so you can just bring all the necessary stuff incase you will swim.
4. Umbrella - it can be so hot at times so better bring umbrella incase of rain and for the hot weather.
5. Swimming/swimwear - I suggest to visit there on regular days. The beach is being well maintained by the government so expect that its somehow clean. I experienced visiting there on a long weekend (holiday) and sadly maybe becoz of the surge in visitors we found it to be not so clean.
6. Beach Mat/ blanket - this is necessary if you want to experience picnic style of outing. There are limited chairs and tables in the island, so better bring this Mat.
7. Tent - if you want a comfortable space / area, then this is okay to bring, otherwise, Beach Mat under the tree is okay.
8. Sunblock - irregardless if youre going to swim or not, better to put some sunscreen.
9. Enjoy! The sceneries will definitely captivate your attention!
St John's Island Lodge
Situated around 6.5km south of Singapore, St John's Island (previously known as Pulau Sekijang Bendara) spans 39 hectares.
Visitors who plan to stay overnight within the exquisite nature can book St John’s Island Lodge (former St John’s Island Campsite and Holiday Bungalow) and the overnight accommodation facilities.

St John’s Island Lodge reopened on Saturday (Jun 1) after the completion of upgrading works that began a year ago. Visitors at the lodge can now enjoy new amenities during their stay such as a new barbecue pit area.

St John’s Island : Quiet, Unspoiled getaway from Singapore

This video is a quick guide on how to get to St John’s Island, Lazarus Island from Singapore and a quick tour of islands.
If you consider yourself a beach person, but always dread going to the only two decent options Sentosa and East Coast Park because you’re more likely to drown in a sea of people than in the real sea… maybe it’s time to consider St Johns, Lazarus and Kusu Island for your next island getaway.
Note: Kusu island is covered in another video.
St John’s Island is located approximately 6.5km to the south of mainland Singapore and a great thing about going to these offshore islands is, that you can visit without a passport.
Head to Marina South Pier and take ferry which covers all these islands. The ferry makes a loop from Marina South Pier to St John’s Island, then to Kusu Island and back again. If you wish to visit Lazarus Island, it's 20-minute walk (no ferry) across a causeway from St John island.
The ferry timings vary from weekdays to weekends as well as public holidays. At 01:08
Tickets can be purchase at Marina South Pier or online. But if you are purchasing at MSP, please note that the ticketing counter closes at 3 pm. Do remember to keep your ticket safe as you will need it for your trip back.

Multi Species Ajing in St John Island
It's my first 2 visits to one of Singapore’s beautiful island 'Saint John Island or St John's Island in short'. I have always wanted to go to this island as I heard there were alot of pelagics around so here I am in this episode.. Most of the catches were on our Ajing ultralight finesse setup so it was a challenge especially with the terrains. @call_me_fiq with his coral trout and @fishingwithnas with his Diamond Trevally! Enjoy the video!
