theo harpik,
A short video tour round St Mary's Church, West Somerton, located in Church Lane, West Somerton, Norfolk. Standing on a slight rise above the village, St Mary's church dates back to Norman times. It has a round tower with octagonal top, a thatched nave, a magnificent chancel, and contains fine examples of 14th century wall-paintings, and a medieval pulpit and screen. In the graveyard is the massive tomb of Robert Hales, the Norfolk Giant, a Victorian celebrity who was seven feet six inches tall. The nave and porch was re-thatched in 2009, leaving the church looking truly splendid. The restoration of the medieval wall-paintings is the Parochial Church Council's next project. Original video by Keith Pharo (theo harpik), 6th August 2013.

Some have said that the Y refers to the resort Eye and that the place was Öja's beach land. Another interpretation has been that the Y is confused with “I” in the meaning of “the city of Isa”. Others have argued that the past was originally y (r), that is, the name for idegran. Another interpretation has been that the past was Ly in the sense that seafarers here in the bay sought shelter for harsh winds. The latest interpretation is based on the oldest mention in 1244 where the forefinger is the word We. A We was a Viking age sacrificial site, often located near the coast

1100s
Through the Danish conquests along the southern Baltic coast in the late 1100s during Absalon's bishop in Roskilde and Archbishop of Lund, leadership created peace around the Baltic coasts. At the same time, German Hansan arose which made herring fish and fish trade attractive along the Skåne coast. At the mouth of Vassaån, therefore, probably reached the end of the 11th century a fish market place.
1200s
Gråbrödraklostret in Ystad.
Ystad is mentioned for the first time in 1244 when King Erik and his brother Abel visited the city. The oldest city was on a hill just west of Vassaån. Here the city church was built St. Mary's Church, one of Skåne's oldest churches in brick. Today, however, only a small part of the original church remains.
Directly next to the church, the town square was excavated and its town hall was also built. The town hall's original medieval basement is still preserved.
A Franciscan monastery was founded in the city either in 1258 or 1267 during an Archbishop's intrigue play when the church and the royal power were in conflict. However, Ystad continued to be a royal city, which to some extent is confirmed by the seal of the lion as a heraldic figure.
Ystad in the 1300s.
Around 1300, the city was expanded by new buildings at the height just east of Vassaån. Here was the new district's church, St. Nicolai. Vassaån had during the Middle Ages such a powerful flow of water that the Franciscan monastery could even build a watermill by the river. In 1363, councilors were mentioned for the first time in Ystad.
These must, however, have existed already at the founding of the city. In 1376 there are the oldest preserved writings of a german company in the city.
The company was a trade fair for German merchants. In the so-called Schonenfahren archive in Lübeck there is a medieval sketch of the building. A Heligandshus is mentioned for the first time in 1398. The hospital, consisting of church, cemetery and hospital building, has been located to the area east of the river. Among other things, you have found skeletons and a sparrow of 294 coins from the years 1440-1513

Åhus,Sweden
Åhus is the second largest locality in Kristianstad Municipality, Skåne County, Sweden with 9,423 inhabitants in 2010, but the number triples during the summer due to tourists who come seeking the beaches and nature of the Helgeå and Hanöbukten area. Åhus is also famous for hosting one of the largest beach handball tournaments in the world with approximately 20,000 participants. In 2011, in the village of Rinkaby near Åhus, the World Scout Meeting also known as the Jamboree was held.
An old town, Åhus gained its city privileges in 1149, but lost them in 1617 when Kristianstad was built, following the burning of Vä by Swedish king Gustav II Adolf during the Kalmar War, 1611-13. Built during the 12th century, one of the oldest buildings of Åhus is Sankta Maria kyrka (church of St. Mary).
The town is also center for the famous Swedish Eel-parties (ålagille), where people come together during August and September to eat eel and drink considerable amounts of schnapps, mostly the world famous locally produced Absolut Vodka.
In 1950 an ice-cream factory was built in Åhus, Åhus Glass. The factory was bought by another company, and ice-cream is now made and sold under the name Ingman Glass. Today, the original owners of Åhus Glass have reopened under a new brand, Otto Glass, producing ice cream with the original Åhus Glass recipes -- the company is famous for its chocolate-dipped waffle cones. Another ice cream factory in Skåne is Engelholms Glass.
