Former Jesuit Church & Residence, Limerick
Reportage slideshow (June, 2011) of the (former) Sacred Heart Jesuit Church, Limerick, Ireland.
This iconic building is situated at the Crescent, on O'Connell Street, Limerick, and was completed in 1868 and opened for public worship on January 27th 1869. The architect was William Corbett and the church is in the parish of St Joseph's. According to some reports, it was originally intended to be dedicated to St. Aloysius but when it was formally dedicated in 1869 it was called the 'Church of the Sacred Heart'. The façade of the church is Classical/Grecian in design and was renovated in 1900. There are no aisles in the church but the nave had two rows of pews. The nave was extended in 1919.
The ceiling of the church is panelled with floriated ornaments in Stucco work. The high altar was designed by William Corbett and is made from 22 types of precious marble. On the floor around the high altar, there are the symbols of the four writers of the Gospels. The angel represents Matthew, the lion represents Mark while Luke and John are represented by the bull and eagle respectively.
Some of the stained glass windows throughout the church show the letters 'IHS'. These letters are the first three letters of the Greek word for Jesus which is IHSOUS. In Latin the letters stand for Jesus hominum salvator which translates as 'Jesus, Saviour of men'.
There are nine mosaics above the high altar. The central mosaic is of the Sacred Heart ascending in the presence of St Margaret Mary Alacoque and Blessed Claude la Colombiere. It is surrounded (from left to right) by depictions of St Francis Jerome, St Francis Borgia, St Francis Xavier, St Ignatius, St Stanislaus, St Aloysius, St John Berchmans and St Francis Regis.
Sadly, the church (& residence) formally closed in 2006 and is currently for sale - again!

THOMOND SWIM 2019 RESULTS :
We are now into 12th annual Thomond Swim. Each year the numbers continue to grow as does open water participation. This year we didn’t have the hot weather but over 91 swimmers took to the 14.5 degree water and swam through our historic city. A big thank you as always to Limerick Marine Seach & Rescue for the boat cover along with the support of Limerick Kayak Club. The Civil Defence provided the welcome shower & finishing tents. Again we had the support of St Michaels Boat Club for the event we are very grateful for their support each year in opening up their club to the swimmers.
We remember our former Coach John Dempsey RIP today who now doubt is now analyzing those results with some of the former great coaches who have gone before us. John was instrumental in driving the revival of the Thomond Swim having swam many times in the original and then took on the challenge of the new route so many years later.
We had plenty of food to recharge the batteries afterwards at Shannon Boat Club, with it’s stunning vista of the route.
The Thomond Swim covers a distance of 1800m and is a qualifier for the Liffey and Harbour Swims in Dublin. It is a handicapped start and is open to wetsuit and non wetsuit competitors.
Spectators are encouraged to come and support the swimmers with the best vantage points along Clancy Strand, O’Callaghan Strand, Sarsfield bridge and Howley’s quay.
Through the sponsorship of Shannon Group and safety support of Limerick Marine Search and Rescue, swimmers of all ages from 16 upwards complete for first, second and third place non wetsuit male and female prizes, first wetsuit male and female and fastest overall male and female swimmers.

People of Ireland - Michael
Michael has been running a sex shop in Limerick for the last 25 years. Over that time he has seen a lot of changes in the industry to a point where it's a normal thing for couples to come into his shop and not be afraid to tell him what they want and why they want it.

Limerick City Aquathon – Report & Results
Wednesday 17th July was the second running of the Limerick City Centre #Aquathon and again this was closed to Limerick triathlon club members and invited guests. Like last year and every race none of this would be possible without the help from Limerick sporting clubs. St. Michaels rowing club were so helpful with the use of their facilities. We are very grateful for having showers , a place to store gear and have hold the prize giving, what more could you ask for and when it is given to you for free you can’t get better than that. So the race day started by picking up the van & Equipment from Castle cabins with Brendan Kennedy heading to the boat club to set up the race route with the help of Pat Lysaght,. Pat and Brendan put out the buoys and I said I would check the distance and Low & behold the very same as last year. After a quick hello and safety briefing the race was set for 19:00 which is something we need to keep in line as the river is tidal.
THE RACE:
There were two starts a dive start and a water start. The dive start got a 2 sec head so with half the field diving and half started in the water. The swim was tough with a slight coming tide that pushed a few swimmers up the river and they had to work hard to get to the first buoy but the second buoy was tide assisted then across to buoy 3 and back to the city slip way.
First out of the water was Ross Higgins with a time of 10.20 and second out was the leading lady Limerick swimming clubs Edie Reynolds on her first aquathon. Then they started to come in bunches with Liam Liddy , Club Chairman Richard Chapman, and a great swim from Ed Fahy and Evan o Sullivan Glynn were the top 6 out. The ladies were after Edie were Rebecca White, Amy O’ Connor and Ailbhe Healy.
The run was a flat enough course with one or two drags an out and back course along the river bank. The men's race with Ross staying ahead from the swim and in fact more than doubling his lead to win comfortably with Liam Liddy second and Richard Chapman 3rd maybe not wearing the wetsuit cost him by I’d say he would be happy with the run.
The ladies race developed with Caitriona Farrell 15th out of the water ran all the Ladies in front to finish first lady and eight over all with the 8th fastest run 21:49. With second and 3rd only 40 sec between there was no time for errors so it was a good battle for all athletes
THE AFTERMATH:
After the race all athletes helped out with putting away the equipment and most stay around for the prize giving this year we spared no expense with a trophy 1st male and female and a prize for the person who came home in last place. But the smile of the day goes to Edie Reynolds who finished her introduction to triathlon with her dad Bobby a proud moment for both well done. I see a future for her.
THANKS: to the following St Michael’s Rowing Club, Castle cabins, Pat Lysaght, Brendan Kennedy, All the marshals, and LTC committee who helped out Brenda, Sean, and Cllr. Elisa O'Donovan and Krzysztof Piotr Luszczki. Not to forget my own 2 children Donnacha and Aine
