An original feature of the actual flag of Levasseur: it is one of the very few “Jolly Roger” showing a black pattern on a white background.
For three centuries, the adventurous life of Levasseur has been an inspiration for the most famous authors, like Robert Louis Stevenson who reused the story of the cannons of La Nossa Senhora in “Treasure Island”.
Mangaka Eiichiro Oda took inspiration from La Buse in his great series “One Piece”: the story starts with the execution of Gol D. Roger, Lord of the Pirates, who throws an incomplete treasure map to the crowd, and whose last words are practically the same than those said by Levasseur.
The captain of Bird Galley, William Snelgrave, was spared by Levasseur and his men, because his crew described him as an officer of great value and above all human. Snelgrave was kept captive during a month, and wrote later about the extravagant feasts which followed the capture of his ship. Besides, he noted that most of the sailors who turned to piracy justified it because of the very harsh discipline in the national navies.
In his book “A General History of the Pyrates”, Daniel Defoe wrote that Levasseur progressively lost the use of one eye, and often hid it behind a headband. The eyepatch is today considered as a stereotype of pirates in collective imagination.
A pirate of legend, Levasseur belongs today to the folklore in the Indian Ocean. His tomb –located in the marine cemetery of Saint-Paul, Réunion- is a true tourist attraction. However, it is now acknowledged that it does not keep the pirate’s remains. Indeed, Levasseur’s body was shown to the public for several days, then thrown into a common grave, as it was the custom of this time for all executed pirates.
Contrary to La Buse, Blackbeard chose to stay in the Americas in 1716. But his career ended as soon as 1718, killed by Lieutenant Robert Maynard of the Royal Navy, during the combat of Ocracoke.
Contrary to his legend, Blackbeard was not the cruellest pirate. He preferred ruse and intimidation rather than violent actions. Moreover, his career was relatively short and not so profitable, compared to other pirates, including La Buse.
The grandfather of the French author Jean-Marie Le Clézio spent twenty years of his life in search of La Buse’s treasure, raking the beaches of Rodrigues island, in the Mascarenhas Archipelago.
The Englishman Reginald Cruise-Wilkins searched La Buse’s treasure from 1947 to 1970. He thought that it was hidden in Mahé, Seychelles. He did find a pirate’s cache but this one only contained a few golden coins and some pistols.
The main plot of the Android videogame “Assassin’s Creed: Pirates” made by Ubisoft is the search of La Buse’s treasure.
A French pirate, named Captain Levasseur” appears in the American movie “Captain Blood” (released in 1935). He is loosely related to La Buse, with his French accent and his slash. Yet, as it should be in any good Anglo-Saxon movie, he is killed during a duel with the English hero.
Did you know ? At the turn of the 18th century, France, England and Holland managed to take many territories from Spain in the Caribbean. With the growing might of these states, the era of the flibustery ended and the era of piracy started.
Famous English pirates (Edward Teach “Blackbeard”, Stede Bonnet, Jack Rackham...) did not hesitate to attack the ships of the English navy.
Because of the massive British immigration, the French were a minority in the region but they remained active.
It’s the case of Emanuel Wynne who started his career attacking English ships along the coast of Carolina.
Then he sailed to the Caribbean and after to the Gulf of Guinea.
On July 18, 1700, off the Sao Joao island (current Brava, Cape Verde), Wynne only just managed to lose HMS Poole, led by Captain John Cranby. In his report, the British officer described the flag of Wynne’s ship L’Aventure (The Adventure): “A black flag with a skull above two crossbones and an hourglass”.
It is the first description close to the famous “Black Flag” (or Jolly Roger). Today, historians agree to say that Wynne is the indisputable inspirer of Jolly Roger.

SUMMARY

The Kerguelen Islands ( or ; in French commonly Îles Kerguelen but officially Archipel des Kerguelen, pronounced [kɛʁɡelɛn]), also known as the Desolation Islands (Îles de la Désolation in French), are a group of islands in the Antarctic constituting one of the two exposed parts of the Kerguelen Plateau, a large igneous province mostly submerged by the southern Indian Ocean. They are among the most isolated places on Earth, located 450 km (280 mi) northwest of the uninhabited Heard Island and McDonald Islands and more than 3,300 km (2,100 mi) from Madagascar, the nearest populated location (excluding the Alfred Faure scientific station in Île de la Possession, about 1,340 km (830 mi) from there, and the non-permanent station located in Île Amsterdam, 1,440 km (890 mi) away). The islands, along with Adélie Land, the Crozet Islands, Amsterdam, and Saint Paul Islands, and France's Scattered Islands in the Indian Ocean are part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands and are administered as a separate district.
The main island, Grande Terre, is 6,675 km2 (2,577 sq mi) in area and is surrounded by a further 300 smaller islands and islets, forming an archipelago of 7,215 km2 (2,786 sq mi). The climate is raw and chilly with frequent high winds throughout the year. The surrounding seas are generally rough and they remain ice-free year-round. There are no indigenous inhabitants, but France maintains a permanent presence of 45 to 100 scientists, engineers and researchers. There are no airports on the islands, so all travel and transport from the outside world is conducted by ship.

I Believe in the Resurrection: All Will Rise
When Jesus comes again, all people—believers and unbelievers—will rise. Jesus will take the believers to heaven and the unbelievers will go to hell. It’s important for us to keep God’s Word close now, to treat it as our number-one treasure. And confident in God’s grace, we can be bold to share God’s love with others so they too can be saved.

Fort Kochi (Ernakulam) Complete Sightseeing
Fort Kochi is an Island inside the sea about 5 kms west to Cochin (or Ernakulam). There are ferry services to go from the mainland to the islands. It's very cheap to go from Ernakulam to Fort Kochi by a Ferry (about 5 to 10 rs). Cochin or Kochi is a very old port on Arabean Sea since 1341. It is a part of Ernakulam district of Kerala.
Greenx village is a cultural art center promoting Kerala's various arts crafts and cultural programs. This is located in Fort Kochi area by the side of main road. You can buy handicrafts from its showroom. Besides they have a half an hour cultural show at 4 PM showing Kerala dance and martial arts where the ticket is 350/- rs per head. People doing more research on Kerala arts may like to see cultural program.
Aspinwall House is a very old heritage building in Fort Kochi. It was originally the business premises of John Aspinwall established in 1867. The company was trading coconut oil, rubber, pepper, ginger, turmeric and other spices to western countries. However there is nothing much to see there. Just behind Aspinwall house there is a huge fish factory. It was interesting to watch fish packaging there which you can see in the video.
Jawahar Park or Nehru Park is the main park of Fort Kochi located near Vasco-da Gama square. It is a beautiful place with trees, sitting places and sea view on one side. There are lots of fish stalls where you can buy fishes and get fried fresh before you. Chinese fishing nets are also a great attraction. Vascoda Gama Church, Kochi beach and many other tourist attractions are very near (200 meters) to this place.
Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica is located in Fort Kochi area of Ernakulam. It is one of the eight Basilicas in Kerala and considered to be very important for Christians in Kerala. It is quite a big Church and visited by large number of people. It was originally built by Portuguese during sixteenth century which was later destroyed by Dutch and rebuilt by British in 19th century. Santa Cruz was proclaimed as a Basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1984. The Church has a beautiful interior and worth visiting during your Kochi tour.
St. Francis Church or Vasco Da Gama Church is one of the important destinations of Fort Kochi. It is about 200 meters from Vasco Da Gama square and similar distance from Fort Kochi beach. The church is very old and also looks very old. However, the importance is that there is tomb of famous Vasco Da Gama here in this church. People interested in History will definitely like to see the Tomb of Vascoda Gama here. There is also a Dutch cemetery near the church. It is often locked and you can only see from outside.
Indo Portuguese museum is a museum in Fort Kochi located inside Bishop's house established during 1910. There is a huge garden in the front. The museum showcases Portuguese influences on Fort Kochi and neighbouring area in the past. You have to buy tickets to visit the museum. There is a church inside the campus.
Indian Naval Maritime Museum- the maritime museum is situated in Fort Kochi (Kerala) about 2 kms from Fort Kochi Beach. It is managed by Indian Navy near INS Dronacharya. Entry ticket 40/- rs per head, still camera 100/-. Generally I don't enjoy museums as they all keep very similar outdated stuff. However, this museum was interesting with lot of war weapons, misiles, guns and above all a big helicopter. We took a lot of pictures in the museum and near the helicopter. It is one of the top 5 attractions in Fort Kochi and never miss it when you are going to Kerala.
Fort Kochi is mainly a fishing beach. It is very near to Vasco Da Gama square and Jawahar Park. There are many Chinese fishing nets in Fort Kochi beach. You can get fish fries fresh from stalls. The waves are high and rough. There is no sand in the sea beach and you cannot get down to water. You can stand on the concrete road and enjoy the sea view. You can also see large number of boats and ships of different sizes floating on sea at different distances. The port of Vypeen island is visible on the other side of the water.
Classic Movie Bloopers and Mistakes: Film Stars Uncensored - 1930s and 1940s Outtakes
Classical Hollywood cinema or the classical Hollywood narrative, are terms used in film history which designate both a visual and sound style for making motion pictures and a mode of production used in the American film industry between 1917 and 1960. More bloopers:
This period is often referred to as the Golden Age of Hollywood. An identifiable cinematic form emerged during this period called classical Hollywood style.
Classical style is fundamentally built on the principle of continuity editing or invisible style. That is, the camera and the sound recording should never call attention to themselves (as they might in films from earlier periods, other countries or in a modernist or postmodernist work).
Throughout the early 1930s, risque films and salacious advertising, became widespread in the short period known as Pre-Code Hollywood. MGM dominated the industry and had the top stars in Hollywood, and was also credited for creating the Hollywood star system altogether. MGM stars included at various times King of Hollywood Clark Gable, Norma Shearer, Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, Gary Cooper, Mary Pickford, Henry Fonda, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland, Ava Gardner, James Stewart, Katharine Hepburn, Vivien Leigh, Grace Kelly, Gene Kelly, Gloria Stuart, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, John Wayne, Barbara Stanwyck, John Barrymore, Audrey Hepburn and Buster Keaton. Another great achievement of American cinema during this era came through Walt Disney's animation. In 1937, Disney created the most successful film of its time, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Many film historians have remarked upon the many great works of cinema that emerged from this period of highly regimented film-making. One reason this was possible is that, with so many movies being made, not every one had to be a big hit. A studio could gamble on a medium-budget feature with a good script and relatively unknown actors: Citizen Kane, directed by Orson Welles and often regarded as the greatest film of all time, fits that description. In other cases, strong-willed directors like Howard Hawks, Alfred Hitchcock and Frank Capra battled the studios in order to achieve their artistic visions. The apogee of the studio system may have been the year 1939, which saw the release of such classics as The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, Stagecoach, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Destry Rides Again,Young Mr. Lincoln, Wuthering Heights, Only Angels Have Wings, Ninotchka, Babes in Arms, Gunga Din, and The Roaring Twenties. Among the other films from the Golden Age period that are now considered to be classics: Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood, It's a Wonderful Life, It Happened One Night, King Kong, Citizen Kane, Swing Time, Some Like It Hot, A Night at the Opera, All About Eve, The Searchers, Breakfast At Tiffany's, North by Northwest, Dinner at Eight, Rebel Without a Cause, Rear Window, Double Indemnity, Mutiny on the Bounty, City Lights, Red River, The Manchurian Candidate, Bringing Up Baby, Singin' in the Rain, To Have and Have Not, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Roman Holiday, Giant and Jezebel.
The style of Classical Hollywood cinema, as elaborated by David Bordwell, has been heavily influenced by the ideas of the Renaissance and its resurgence of mankind as the focal point.
Thus, classical narration progresses always through psychological motivation, i.e. by the will of a human character and its struggle with obstacles towards a defined goal. The aspects of space and time are subordinated to the narrative element which is usually composed of two lines of action: A romance intertwined with a more generic one such as business or, in the case of Alfred Hitchcock films, solving a crime.
Time in classical Hollywood is continuous, since non-linearity calls attention to the illusory workings of the medium. The only permissible manipulation of time in this format is the flashback. It is mostly used to introduce a memory sequence of a character, e.g. Casablanca.
Likewise, the treatment of space in classic Hollywood strives to overcome or conceal the two-dimensionality of film (invisible style) and is strongly centered upon the human body. The majority of shots in a classical film focus on gestures or facial expressions (medium-long and medium shots). André Bazin once compared classical film to a photographed play in that the events seem to exist objectively and that cameras only give us the best view of the whole play.

My Friend Irma: Memoirs / Cub Scout Speech / The Burglar
My Friend Irma, created by writer-director-producer Cy Howard, is a top-rated, long-run radio situation comedy, so popular in the late 1940s that its success escalated to films, television, a comic strip and a comic book, while Howard scored with another radio comedy hit, Life with Luigi. Marie Wilson portrayed the title character, Irma Peterson, on radio, in two films and a television series. The radio series was broadcast from April 11, 1947 to August 23, 1954.
Dependable, level-headed Jane Stacy (Cathy Lewis, Diana Lynn) began each weekly radio program by narrating a misadventure of her innocent, bewildered roommate, Irma, a dim-bulb stenographer from Minnesota. The two central characters were in their mid-twenties. Irma had her 25th birthday in one episode; she was born on May 5. After the two met in the first episode, they lived together in an apartment rented from their Irish landlady, Mrs. O'Reilly (Jane Morgan, Gloria Gordon).
Irma's boyfriend Al (John Brown) was a deadbeat, barely on the right side of the law, who had not held a job in years. Only someone like Irma could love Al, whose nickname for Irma was Chicken. Al had many crazy get-rich-quick schemes, which never worked. Al planned to marry Irma at some future date so she could support him. Professor Kropotkin (Hans Conried), the Russian violinist at the Princess Burlesque theater, lived upstairs. He greeted Jane and Irma with remarks like, My two little bunnies with one being an Easter bunny and the other being Bugs Bunny. The Professor insulted Mrs. O'Reilly, complained about his room and reluctantly became O'Reilly's love interest in an effort to make her forget his back rent.
Irma worked for the lawyer, Mr. Clyde (Alan Reed). She had such an odd filing system that once when Clyde fired her, he had to hire her back again because he couldn't find anything. Useless at dictation, Irma mangled whatever Clyde dictated. Asked how long she had been with Clyde, Irma said, When I first went to work with him he had curly black hair, then it got grey, and now it's snow white. I guess I've been with him about six months.
Irma became less bright as the program evolved. She also developed a tendency to whine or cry whenever something went wrong, which was at least once every show. Jane had a romantic inclination for her boss, millionaire Richard Rhinelander (Leif Erickson), but he had no real interest in her. Another actor in the show was Bea Benaderet.
Katherine Elisabeth Wilson (August 19, 1916 -- November 23, 1972), better known by her stage name, Marie Wilson, was an American radio, film, and television actress. She may be best remembered as the title character in My Friend Irma.
Born in Anaheim, California, Wilson began her career in New York City as a dancer on the Broadway stage. She gained national prominence with My Friend Irma on radio, television and film. The show made her a star but typecast her almost interminably as the quintessential dumb blonde, which she played in numerous comedies and in Ken Murray's famous Hollywood Blackouts. During World War II, she was a volunteer performer at the Hollywood Canteen. She was also a popular wartime pin-up.
Wilson's performance in Satan Met a Lady, the second film adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's detective novel The Maltese Falcon, is a virtual template for Marilyn Monroe's later onscreen persona. Wilson appeared in more than 40 films and was a guest on The Ed Sullivan Show on four occasions. She was a television performer during the 1960s, working until her untimely death.
Wilson's talents have been recognized with three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame: for radio at 6301 Hollywood Boulevard, for television at 6765 Hollywood Boulevard and for movies at 6601 Hollywood Boulevard.
Wilson married four times: Nick Grinde (early 1930s), LA golf pro Bob Stevens (1938--39), Allan Nixon (1942--50) and Robert Fallon (1951--72).
She died of cancer in 1972 at age 56 and was interred in the Columbarium of Remembrance at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Nantes ([nɑ̃t] (listen)) (Gallo: Naunnt or Nantt (pronounced [nɑ̃t] or [nɑ̃ːt]); Breton: Naoned (pronounced [ˈnɑ̃wnət])) is a city in Loire-Atlantique on the Loire, 50 km (31 mi) from the Atlantic coast. The city is the sixth-largest in France, with a population of 303,382 in Nantes and a metropolitan area of nearly 950,000 inhabitants. With Saint-Nazaire, a seaport on the Loire estuary, Nantes forms the main north-western French metropolis.
It is the administrative seat of the Loire-Atlantique department and the Pays de la Loire région, one of 18 regions of France. Nantes belongs historically and culturally to Brittany, a former duchy and province, and its omission from the modern administrative region of Brittany is controversial.
Nantes was identified during classical antiquity as a port on the Loire. It was the seat of a bishopric at the end of the Roman era before it was conquered by the Bretons in 851. Although Nantes was the primary residence of the 15th-century dukes of Brittany, Rennes became the provincial capital after the 1532 union of Brittany and France. During the 17th century, after the establishment of the French colonial empire, Nantes gradually became the largest port in France and was responsible for nearly half of the 18th-century French Atlantic slave trade. The French Revolution resulted in an economic decline, but Nantes developed robust industries after 1850 (chiefly in shipbuilding and food processing). Deindustrialisation in the second half of the 20th century spurred the city to adopt a service economy.
In 2012, the Globalization and World Cities Research Network ranked Nantes as a Gamma world city. It is the fourth-highest-ranking city in France, after Paris, Lyon and Marseille. The Gamma category includes cities such as Algiers, Orlando, Porto, Turin and Leipzig. Nantes has been praised for its quality of life, and it received the European Green Capital Award in 2013. The European Commission noted the city's efforts to reduce air pollution and CO2 emissions, its high-quality and well-managed public transport system and its biodiversity, with 3,366 hectares (8,320 acres) of green space and several protected Natura 2000 areas.
