During the years of Communist persecution, the portrait was smuggled out of Russia and is kept to this day in the Novo-Diveyevo Convent in Nanuet, New York.

On July 19 (August 1, according to the new art.) 1903, official church glorification took place in the face of saints and the acquisition of honest relics of Father Seraphim of Sarov , beloved and long respected by the people. The celebrations held in Sarov and Diveevo became a special landmark in the spiritual history of the country, as Sarov and Diveevo have always been and remain a special place of spiritual geography of Russia .
The celebrations were attended by the Emperor Nicholas II, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna and members of the Imperial family. Together with pilgrims from across Russia, local dignitaries and members of the nobility.
Following the Bolshevik Revolution, Soviet authorities severely persecuted religious groups. As part of their persecution of Christians, they confiscated many relics of saints, including St. Seraphim. Furthermore, his biographer Seraphim Chichagov, who came to become a Metropolitan, was arrested, sentenced to death and executed by firing squad in 1937 (and is also celebrated as a Russian Orthodox saint).
In 1991, St. Seraphim's relics were rediscovered after being hidden in a Soviet anti-religious museum for seventy years. This caused a sensation in post-Soviet Russia and throughout the Orthodox world. A crucession (religious procession) escorted the relics, on foot, all the way from Moscow to Diveyevo Convent, where they remain to this day.

Saint Seraphim of Sarov (1754-1833)is one of the most renowned Russian monks and mystics in the Russian Orthodox Church. He is generally considered the greatest of the 19th-century startsy (elders). Seraphim extended the monastic teachings of contemplation, theoria and self-denial to the layperson. He taught that the purpose of the Christian life was to acquire the Holy Spirit. Perhaps his most popular quotation amongst Orthodox believers is Acquire a peaceful spirit, and thousands around you will be saved.
Seraphim was glorified (canonized) by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1903 in the presence of Emperor Nicholas II and the Imperial family. These photographs form a part of that celebration......

Text_1_Diveyevo monastery prepares for Easter (TV-report, 2014)
Duration 3:50
A journalist spends a week before Easter in Diveyevo, the largest Russian monastery for women.
Morning prayers last almost 4 hours. Around 11 a.m. sisters leave the church, they’re already smiling and talking: the day can be started.
They have a quick meal and go to their ‘obediences.’ It’s what is called ‘work’ in the world. Each sister has some work, e.g. cleaning up the temple, cooking meals or meeting pilgrims. But on these days 460 of Diveevo sisters have only one main thing - to prepare for Easter.
This smiling young woman is mother Ioasafa. And this is her little culinary factory. In a tiny kitchen, sisters and their helpers turn cakes into beautiful presents. They will decorate almost 500 handmade cakes: for the sisters, for gifts and for sale.
Mother Ioasafa’s preparing to celebrate her 17th Easter at the monastery. She came here right after finishing school. Since childhood, she knew that she’d devote her life to the church. One day she came here with her mum my mother and felt that it was her place.
‘I asked the elder, father Kirill Pavlov. He said that I needed to stay in that place, but before that I had to live at home for some time and get a passport. Of course, I immediately started to experience various temptations. The Enemy prevented my coming to the monastery in every way. He didn’t want me to…,’ - says the nun.
But even in the monastery the path to God isn’t easy. You have to earn the right to become a nun. First you’re a novice candidate, then a novice, then an inokinya, and only after that you can be allowed to take the vows.
‘I want to say hello!’ mother Siluana is joking, causing laughter in the company. She teaches me to properly spread the glaze and wonders how the story with Pussy Riot ended in Moscow.
All this doesn’t seem like narrow-minded ideas about the monastery. But Diveevo sisters have never been isolated from the outside world.
To Diveevo monastery pilgrims travel by buses. Orthodox people believe that this place is an earthly lot of the Virgin.
Between morning and evening services it’s necessary to prepare almost 3,000 eggs for Easter. Onion peels have been collected since winter. It's no joke - 6 bags!
‘We’re a little tired and probably happy as it’s still the end of the Lent.’ At other times, mother Silvana is an auditor, there’s such a job here. Someone has to audit numerous monastic shops. Who better than her can do it, she’s a former accountant. ‘The Lord allows so that a person can easily renounce everything: status in the world, favourite job, family.’
Olga has a diploma of the Swiss Association of florists and a flower shop in Moscow. But several times a year she leaves everything and goes to the Nizhny Novgorod region to decorate Diveevo for the next holiday. About 20 same-minded people came with her, they all arrived from the capital.
‘Nowadays our job bosses understand that it’s not just that you go somewhere to relax, but it's a really necessary thing, and they make advances.’ Olya works in a travel agency as a middle manager, like almost everyone here: without much experience in floral design, but with a great desire to help.
Good Friday is the saddest day of Holy Week. Sisters fast strictly - till the end of Evening prayers it’s forbidden to eat. They pray a lot, and talk only if it’s really necessary. It seems that only the sister-photographer remembers about the world and quickly takes photos.
It’s all difficult to understand, but we got used to it after several days in a monastery. Instead of ‘Hello’ they say ‘bless me,’ instead of ‘Thank you’ they say ‘God save you,’ instead of ‘You’re welcome’ they say ‘To the glory of God.’ In such a place many doors will always be closed for a worldly person.

Golden ring of Russia: monastery near Rostov
The Golden Ring of Russia (Russian: Золото́е кольцо́ Росси́и) is a vast area in which old Russian cities are located in a ring-like arrangement and a well-known theme-route. The cities are located northeast of Moscow and were the north-eastern part of the ancient Rus'.[1] The Golden Ring of Russia formerly comprised the region known as Zalesye. The idea of the route and the term were created in 1967 by Soviet historian and essayist Yuri Bychkov, who published in the newspaper Sovetskaya Kultura in November–December 1967 a series of essays on the cities under the heading Golden Ring.[2]
These ancient towns, which also played a significant role in the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church, preserve the memory of the most important and significant events in Russian history. The towns have been called open-air museums and feature unique monuments of Russian architecture of the 12th–18th centuries, including kremlins, monasteries, cathedrals, and churches. These towns are among the most picturesque in Russia and prominently feature Russia's onion domes.
Rostov Velikiy is known as Rostov-Veliky (Rostov the Great) to distinguish it from the larger Rostov-on-Don. It is among the oldest of cities in Russia, having first been mentioned in chronicles in 862. Its most impressive sight is the white-stone kremlin which stands on Lake Nero and is now a museum-reserve. The city also has three monasteries and museums dedicated to the art of painting on enamel for which the city is famed.

St. Seraphim of Sarov
Life and Teachings
by Bishop Alexander (Mileant), translated by Nicholas and Natalia Semyanko
St. Seraphim of Sarov
St. Seraphim (born Prohor Moshnin) was born in 1759 to a merchant family in Kursk. At the age of 10, he became seriously ill. During the course of his illness, he saw the Mother of God in his sleep, who promised to heal him. Several days later there was a religious procession in Kursk with the locally revered miracle-working icon of the Mother of God. Due to bad weather, the procession took an abbreviated route past the house of the Moshnin family. After his mother put Seraphim up to the miracle-working image, he recovered rapidly. While at a young age, he needed to help his parents with their shop, but business had little appeal for him. Young Seraphim loved to read the lives of the saints, to attend church and to withdraw into seclusion for prayer.
At the age of 18, Seraphim firmly decided to become a monk. His mother blessed him with a large copper crucifix, which he wore over his clothing all his life. After this, he entered the Sarov monastery as a novice.
From day one in the monastery, exceptional abstinence from food and slumber were the distinguishing features of his life. He ate once a day, and little. On Wednesdays and Fridays he ate nothing. After asking the blessing of his starets (i.e., a spiritual elder), he began to withdraw often into the forest for prayer and religious contemplation. He became severely ill again soon after, and was forced to spend most of the course of the next three years lying down.
St. Seraphim was once again healed by the Most Holy Virgin Mary, Who appeared to him accompanied by several saints. Pointing to the venerable Seraphim, The Holy Virgin said to the apostle John the Theologian: He is of our lineage. Then, by touching his side with Her staff, She healed him.
His taking of the monastic vows occurred in 1786, when he was 27 years old. He was given the name Seraphim, which in Hebrew means fiery, or burning. He was soon made a hierodeacon. He justified his name by his extraordinarily burning prayer. He spent all of his time, save for the very shortest of rests, in church. Through such prayer and the labors of religious services, Seraphim became worthy to see angels, both serving and singing in church. During the liturgy on Holy Thursday, he saw the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, in the form of the Son of man, proceeding into the Church with the Heavenly host and blessing those praying. The saint could not speak for a long time after being struck by this vision,.In 1793, St. Seraphim was ordained a hieromonk, after which he served every day and received Holy Communion for a year. St. Seraphim then began to withdraw into his farther hermitage — the forest wilderness about five kilometers from Sarov Monastery. He achieved great perfection at this time. Wild animals — bears, rabbits, wolves, foxes and others — came to the hut of the ascetic. The staritsa (i.e., eldress) of the Diveevo monastery, Matrona Plescheeva, witnessed how St. Seraphim fed a bear that had come to him out of his hand: The face of the great starets was particularly miraculous. It was joyous and bright, as that of an angel, she described. While living in this little hermitage of his, St. Seraphim once suffered greatly at the hands of robbers. Although he was physically very strong and was holding an axe at the time, St. Seraphim did not resist them. In answer to their threats and their demands for money, he lay his axe down on the ground, crossed his arms on his chest and obediently gave himself up to them.
