12 Holy Sofia Church and City Tour of Sofia, Bulgaria
The Saint Sofia Church is the second oldest church in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, dating to the 4th-6th century. In the 14th century, the church gave its name to the city, previously known as Sredets. The church was built on the site of several earlier churches from 4th century and places of worship dating back to the days when it was the necropolis of the Roman town of Serdica. In the 2nd century, it was the location of a Roman theater. The basic cross design of the present basilica, with its two east towers and one tower-cupola, is believed to be the fifth structure to be constructed on the site and was built during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the middle of the 6th century. The church of St. Sofia - Ohrid - Macedonia
The church of St. Sofia is one of the largest medieval churches on this territory. For a long time it was the cathedral church (Great Church) of the Ohrid Archiepiscopate whose ecclesiastical authority covered the territories up to the river Danube to the north, the Albanian coast to the west, and the Bay of Thessalonica to the east.
The church was probably used as a cathedral way back in the past, in the period of the Czar Samuel who, in the late X century, moved his throne from Prespa to Ohrid. The other assumption is that there used to be another church on the same site during the reign of the Macedonian Czar Samuel, and that later on this church was ruined for unknown reasons. The date of the construction of that church is uncertain because there are no inscriptions that help reveal it. It is also mentioned that today's church was either built or restored during the period of the Archbishop Leo who was on the throne of the Church in the period between 1035-1056. His esteemed ecclesiastical principal became a donor of the painting decorations in the church of St. Sofia.

Take a tour of Sofia's Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Bulgaria -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
A magnanimous domed Neo-Byzantine Orthodox Cathedral stands in Sofia, Bulgaria.
St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was built in honor of Russian soldiers who lost their lives in the 1887 to 1888 Russo-Turkish War.
Constructed from 1882 to 1912, the cathedral currently occupies a vicinity of 3,170 square meters.
The cathedral's interior is abundantly decorated in fine Italian marble, alabaster, Brazilian onyx, and other valuable materials.

Church St. George Rotunda | Sofia, Bulgaria
A short documentary clip, shot on 02.08.2012 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Church St. George, also known as Rotunda. The church is part of a larger archaeological complex. Behind the apse are part of the ancient Roman street with preserved drainage, foundations of a great basilica, probably a public building and smaller buildings.

Live City Walking Tour from Sofia, Bulgaria + Weird Facts ????????
It's a lovely winter Sunday in the capital of Bulgaria! Check out this live tour of the city center after I went on the Free Sofia Walking Tour and learn some of the tips and facts I learned about this always growing, never aging city. There's also a yellow brick road (random).
Summary of Sofia:
-One of the oldest cities in Europe, founded over 6,000 years ago
-Named after a church (but not Saint Sofia, like many people think)
-The only European capital that's not on a river or port
-Bulgaria has some of the oldest vineyards in Europe and is also known for having the best rose oil in the world
-The only European capital with a significant mountain nearby where you can go skiing! - Vitosha Mountain
-Bulgaria is a democracy that joined NATO in 2004 and the European Union in 2007
-The Lion is a symbol of Bulgaria, although lions have never lived there. The currency, Lev, means lion in Bulgarian and you can find lions represented everywhere from Sofia's coat of arms to beer cans.
-Sofia and Bulgaria are famous for their thermal hot springs everywhere
-Sofia is built on levels - you can see ruins from the 4th century AD in the subway, next to 21st century construction
-It's one of the few European capitals that doesn't have an old town center
-Although the country is quite secular, in 1 square block you can find an Orthodox church, Catholic cathedral, Jewish synagogue and Islamic Mosque - also near a Russian Orthodox church.
-Sofia has lots of great bars, restaurants, and nightlife, as well as reasonably priced everything from food to luxury hotels
It's worth a visit!
