Saint Sophia Cathedral
The foundations were laid in 1037; the cathedral took two decades to complete. After the pillaging of Kiev in 1169, followed by Mongolian Tatars in 1240, the cathedral fell into disrepair. Repair started in 1633 and continued until 1767. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, and during the Soviet antireligious campaign of the 1920s, the government plan called for the cathedral's destruction. The cathedral was saved from destruction; however, in 1934, Soviet authorities confiscated the structure from the church, including the surrounding 17th-18th century architectural complex and designated it as an architectural and historical museum. On 21 August 2007, the Saint Sophia Cathedral was named one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine.

Paul’s risky adventure to Kiev, Ukraine was primarily to cover the September 16, 2014 Ukraine Parliament ratification of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and to assess the aftermath ramifications of the Ukraine’s historic February 18-22, 2014 Ukraine “Euromaidan” Revolution.
The “Euromaidan” movement ’s creation was originally motivated by the pro-Russian government’s 2013 termination of the proposed Association Agreement between the European Union and the Ukraine. Since then, the movement has morphed into a movement to terminate the pro-Russian government, end the dysfunctional historical relationship with Russia, end public corruption and reform Ukrainian society by guaranteeing its citizens basic human/civil rights.
After protests/unrest began in November, 2013, Kiev’s Independence Square became the main site where the final violent confrontations of the February 18-22, 2014 Ukraine “Euromaidan” Revolution took place. The revolution resulted in the Ukraine’s pro-Russian government being overthrown and the establishment of a more democratic, transparent pro-European Ukrainian government. During the violent clashes between Euromaidan supporters and the police, a 100+ people were killed and 1,000+ were injured by police gun fire/brutality in Independence Square where there are now shrines/monuments to the brave Ukrainians who gave their lives.

I found some time to visit the Saint-Sophia Cathedral located in Kiev, Ukraine
Kiev's Saint-Sophia Cathedral is kind of the 'new Constantinople', capital of the Christian principality of Kiev, established in 11th century in a region evangelized after the baptism of St Vladimir in 988.
The spiritual and intellectual influence of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra contributed to the spread of Orthodox thought and the Orthodox faith in the Russian world from the 17th to the 19th century.
The Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings and Kiev-Pechersk Lavra represent two outstanding complexes of cultural heritage monuments from the Middle Ages and Early Modern period.

In 2011 the historic site was reassigned from the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Regional Development of Ukraine to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. One of the reasons for the move was that both Saint Sophia Cathedral and Kiev Pechersk Lavra are recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage Program as one complex, while in Ukraine the two were governed by different government entities.

The cathedral's name comes from the 6th-century Hagia Sophia cathedral in Constantinople (meaning Holy Wisdom, and dedicated to the Holy Wisdom rather than a specific saint named Sophia). Architecture-wise, its model could have been the 13-domed oaken Holy Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod (c. 989), which Yaroslav I the Wise determined to imitate in stone as a sign of gratitude to the citizens of Novgorod who had helped him secure the Kievan throne in 1019.

A severe incident was the funeral of Patriarch Volodymyr of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Kiev Patriarchy in 1995, when riot police were forced to prevent the burial on the premises of the museum and a bloody clash took place.[citation needed] After events such as those no religious body has yet been given the rights for regular services. The complex now remains a secular museum of Ukraine's Christianity, with most of its visitors being tourists.
