St Ubaldo Day: The Candles of Gubbio - 2nd Episode
The 15th of May in Gubbio is St Ubaldo Day and it takes place a great celebration called the Candle Race! After the ritual of the Raising, as the huge candles stand upright, everyone is running, moving like coloured snakes around the Piazza. Everyone wants to get into the church to celebrate the candles and the candle bearers. What a stunning experience: forty thousand people crushed into a space big enough for four hundred!

Festa dei Ceri 2008 - Gubbio, Umbria
Gubbio is best known for its palio, the Corsa dei Ceri, a spectacular run held every year on May 15, in which three teams, devoted to S. Ubaldo (the patron saint of Gubbio), S. Giorgio, and S. Antonio, run through throngs of cheering supporters (clad in the distinctive colours of yellow, blue and black, with white trousers and red belts and neckbands), up much of the mountain from the main square in front of the Palazzo dei Consoli to the basilica of S. Ubaldo, each team carrying a statue of their saint mounted on a wooden octagonal prism, similar to an hour-glass shape 4 meters tall and weighing about 280 kilograms.
The race has strong devotional, civic, and historical overtones and is one of the best-known folklore manifestations in Italy; the Ceri were chosen as the heraldic emblem on the coat of arms of Umbria as a modern administrative region.
A celebration like the Corsa dei Ceri is held also in Jessup, Pennsylvania. In this small town the people carry out the same festivities as the residents of Gubbio do by racing the three statues through the streets. This remains an important and sacred event in both towns.
Gubbio was also one of the centres of production of the Italian pottery (maiolica), during the Renaissance. The most important Italian potter of that period, Mastro Giorgio, was active in Gubbio during the early 16th century.
The city is the setting for the popular story of St. Francis and the Wolf of Gubbio, recorded in the medieval Fioretti di San Francesco.

La Festa dei Ceri - two places in the world: Gubbio, Italy
So amazing. Article in the making.
Road Trippin' | Saint Ubaldo Festival
Every year in the small town of Jessup, groups of Italian Americans come together to bring a piece of the homeland to America.
This is the running of the saints for the Saint Ubaldo Festival.
In 2000, a group of Eugibini-Americans committed to carrying on the tradition decided to bring back the Festa dei Ceri to the Jessup community. Since then, ties between the people of Jessup and Gubbio have grown stronger, new friendships have been born and the festival continues to carry on the tradition of the original la Festa dei Ceri held in Gubbio.
This festival is only run in two places in the world. Here in Jessup, Pennsylvania and in Gubbio, Italy, says Michael Cappellini, Sain Anthony Capodieci.
Jessup's Saint Ubaldo Day celebration is always held on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.

Saint Ubaldo Day is Jessup, Pennsylvania's observance of Gubbio, Italy's La Festa dei Ceri. Both celebrations honor the life of Bishop Ubaldo Baldassini who was canonized as Protector of Gubbio. The eve of his death anniversary, May 15, is marked in Gubbio by a procession known as La Corsa dei Ceri. Jessup conducts a nearly identical Race of the Saints on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.
The procession through the streets features small statues of Saint Ubaldo, Saint George, and Saint Anthony, in order. They are mounted upon immense wooden pedestals each hoisted by a team of Cerioli (runners) clad respectively in yellow, blue, or black.
This is the first aerial view of the festival in Jessup taken in 2014 from a DJI Phantom 2 Vision +.

Viva San Giorgio - St. Ubaldo Day 2007 in Jessup
The Race of the Saints takes place every year in only two places in the world: Gubbio, Italy and Jessup, PA. Sean's team is St. George, so the video is about them. If you are a ceraioli di San Giorgio and would like a higher quality copy, please contact me.
FYI- The saints are St. Ubaldo (yellow), St. George (blue) and St. Anthony (black). The platforms weigh about 500 pounds. We carry the platforms in teams of ten, and switch on a dead run. It is very dangerous, so please do not attempt to do this at home. We are professionals.

St Ubaldo Day! The Race of the Saints 2018!: Shuta Multimedia Vlog Episode 180
Another Festa dei Ceri has come and gone and it had all the color and pageantry, action and thrills, as well as religion and reverence as you can imagine! This event is unique in this entire country, mirrored only in Gubbio,Italy. We are very blessed to be able to experience it!
One thing I have to add: There is a moment of adversity in this video, where everyone from all teams responded so quickly, it showed how much respect is held for the Saints being represented here, and by extension, the Lord above. it is truly an amazing thing to see.
Background:
Every year, on memorial day weekend, La Festa Dei Ceri is celebrated in Jessup, PA. This festival celebrates the actions of Bishop Ubaldo Baldassini, who was canonized as St. Ubaldo. St Ubaldo rescued the town of Gubbio, Italy by talking Barbarossa out of sacking the town. Before he could return with the news, the town was overcome with fear and panic. Lacking CNN or any social networking sites, and with his health failing, Ubaldo needed a way to tell the town he was fine--in a hurry. So he had himself carried on a platform carried by young men from the town. They ran through the city, calming the population. In Gubbio, this event was reenacted by carrying a statue of St. Ubaldo along the same route. Later Statues of St. George and St. Anthony were added. When immigrants from Gubbio settled in Jessup, PA, they brought this tradition with them.
Thus, in Jessup, PA, the Saturday of the Memorial Day weekend is St. Ubaldo Day, and it culminates in the Race of the Saints.

BASILICA SANTUARIO
DI S.UBALDO
GUBBIO
Agosto 2012

This video shows highlights from the 2012 St Ubaldo Day in Jessup, PA. This year we were most fortunate to speak to the Most Rev. Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L, Tenth Bishop of Scranton, who performed the St. Ubaldo Day Mass and the blessing at the Alzata, or the Raising of the Saints. Our thanks go out to Bishop Bambera again for granting us a few moments of his time.
