Saint Vincent College - Are You Safe On Campus
- No matter how robust the police force, you simply can’t stop crime from spilling over to college communities that have metropolitan campuses. Look at any university’s annual crime report, and you’ll discover much higher numbers than schools with rural or suburban locales. It’s not surprising that prospective students and their parents are enticed by the safe, self contained grounds of an institution like Saint Vincent College, which calls a modest yet beautiful 200 acres of land in Latrobe, Pennsylvania home.

Saint Vincent Archabbey is the first Benedictine community established in the United States and the founding monastery of the American Cassinese Congregation. In 1846, Father Boniface Wimmer traveled to America with 18 candidates for the monastic life. From that foundation came a parish, seminary, college and archabbey, as well as foundations throughout the United States and abroad.

Lack of transportation to near or far destinations is the least of your worries here. The Arnold Palmer Regional Airport, Latrobe Amtrak Station, and Westmoreland Transit are all easily accessible as well.
Within a ten mile radius you can indulge in the fun at Idlewild Park & Soak Zone or spend an afternoon golfing at Latrobe Country Club. Or, you can visit the Keystone State Park, a 1,200 acre park with camping, cabin lodging, trails, and a lake that makes for fun outdoorsy day trips or overnight family vacations.
In regards to housing you can find a quiet street where neighbors still say hello to one another. Yes, even where Mr. Rodgers called it his neighborhood.

Saint Vincent College - Taste Buds Need Not Apply
- If our past findings have taught us anything, it’s that universities with smaller enrollment figures are able to offer a more superior dining experience to students. With roughly 1,766 undergraduates on their pastoral campus in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Saint Vincent College certainly has the kind of low numbers we’re talking about. Unfortunately, the one thing students aren’t talking about is the food.

[Wikipedia] Saint Vincent Archabbey
Saint Vincent Archabbey, is a Roman Catholic Benedictine Monastery in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania in the city of Latrobe. A member of the American-Cassinese Congregation, it is the oldest Benedictine monastery in the United States and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. The Benedictine monks of St. Vincent operate and teach Saint Vincent Basilica Parish, Saint Vincent College, and Saint Vincent Seminary. The monks also provide pastoral care for Catholics in the Dioceses of Baltimore, Greensburg, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Altoona-Johnstown, and Richmond. The monks also run a military school in Savannah, Georgia (Benedictine Military School). The Archabbey also oversees Wimmer Priory in Taiwan, and Saint Benedict Priory in Brazil.
The original abbey structures were designed by the German-American architect, J. William Schickel and built between 1891 and 1905.
The current archabbot of St. Vincent's is Rt. Reverend Douglas Robert Nowicki, O.S.B. who was elected by the monastic community in 1991 and reelected in 2010.
Prior to Rev. Nowicki, the Archabbey had had ten archabbots:
Boniface Wimmer (1855 to 1887)
Andrew Hintenach (1888 to 1892)
Leander Schnerr (1892 to 1918)
Aurelius Stehle (1918 to 1930)
Alfred Koch (1930 to 1949)
Denis Strittmatter (1949 to 1963)
Rembert Weakland (1963 to 1967)
Egbert Donovan (1967 to 1979)
Leopold Krul (1979 to 1983)
Paul Maher (1983 to 1991)
The monks operate St. Vincent Archabbey Gristmill, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
Monks from this abbey founded Newark Abbey (Newark, NJ) (founded as St Mary's), Saint John's Abbey (Collegeville, Minnesota), Saint Bernard Abbey (Cullman, Alabama), Saint Benedict Abbey (Atchison, Kansas), Saint Mary's Abbey (Morristown, New Jersey), Saint Bede Abbey (Peru, Illinois), Saint Procopius Abbey (Lisle, Illinois), and Mary Help of Christians Abbey (Belmont, North Carolina).
