Haiti: The Tent Seminary
‘The seminary’s badly destroyed, it really totally collapsed. Had they been in the chapel, they would all have died. The chapel totally disappeared, I mean the floor is sandwiched between two floors and there is nothing there anymore. Just imagine if there were 170 seminarians, then all of them would have died.’
Right Rev. Bernardito Auza, Papal Nuncio to Haiti
The great earthquake of Haiti in January 2010 took the lives of more than 300,000 people among them the Archbishop of Port-au-Prince Joseph Serge Miot, seven diocesan priests, 31 seminarians and 30 religious. 70 % of the capital city, Port-au-Prince, was destroyed. Most public buildings including schools, hospitals, parish churches and the Cathedral were reduced to debris. Among the main institutions damaged were the national seminaries of Theology and Philosophy. This is the story of the Tent Seminary: a humble rebirth of the national seminary to support those young men who seek to serve God through the sacrament of the priesthood.
