Unexpected Visitor from Saipan!
We had an unexpected visit from Pastor Ray Kinsella from Saipan, CNMI and Ferdie Guinto. Saipan is a small island in the Pacific near Guam. We had the opportunity to show him around the farm and some of what we do in our business. We are very grateful that he was able to come by and that we could reconnect. We also laughed alot! Thank you for visiting us all the way from SAIPAN.

WATCH! Saipan Green Flash
Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. When the conditions are just right, and the horizon is clear, you can see a distinctive green flash right above the top of the sun just as it disappears from view.
Here is a clip of Jamaican on Saipan, Walt Goodridge, along with long-time resident Joe Hill catching a glimpse of the Saipan green flash!
[from the Saipan Tribune:] The Japanese movie Green Flash filmed on Saipan last Nov. 22-23, 2013. The movie, set to premiere in April 2014, is about three university students working at Karoake Box in Tokyo who travel to the Pacific in search of happiness and the green flash natural phenomenon.
Actor Yuya Miyagaki and actress Yui Ishikawa were on Saipan for the shoot. The movie is sponsored by the largest karaoke franchise in Japan, Daiichi Kosho Co., Ltd., and supported by convenience store franchisor Lawson Inc. ...While on Saipan the crew filmed at the Japanese-era lighthouse on Navy Hill, Jonny's Bar & Grill, Paseo de Marianas pedestrian mall, Saipan Beach Pathway, and Wing Beach. Saipan TV Interview #1-July 6, 2018
When I'm not on one of my Jamaican in China...and beyond adventures, you'll find me on the island of Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands enjoying my freedom, writing books, running on the beach, taking visitors on an occasional tour, and doing workshops to help others turn their passions into profit and become published authors. This is a video of an interview I did on Saipan's KSPN2 News about a writer's workshop on the island of Tinian (the first of its kind). Interviewer is anchor man, Bob Coldeen, himself a Saipan writer!

Typhoon Yutu on Saipan
My Typhoon Yutu account: The howling winds kept me awake all night, and THEN at about 2am as the winds got more intense, I realized that the sliding glass doors of my bedroom balcony were shaking and shuddering. I had to stand and brace them from 2am to 7am STRAIGHT (old mattress on the outside; arm strength and body weight on the inside) because the entire frame had come loose and a really strong wind would have ripped it out for sure! I couldn't risk letting go for even a second or else I might now have a gaping hole in my back wall! Three of the five apartments with balcony sliding doors lost theirs.(see photos on blog)
And, of course, while in mortal danger fighting against the elements and 180 mile-per-hour winds, in the dark, on a 13 mile long island in the vast, raging western Pacific ocean, I did the next most logical thing anyone in my situation would have done: I took out my selfie stick, attached my smartphone and video recorded it!
On a serious note, however, there was much damage left in the typhoon's wake. See more photos on my jamaicaninchina.com blog, AND please support the GOFUNDME campaign that allows you to put some real faces and personal stories to your contributions:

Marianas Cultural Heritage Month
09/30/09 - Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan speaks on the Floor of the House of Representatives to recognize Maraianas Cultural Heritage Month (September 16-October 12). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan is the first and only person to represent the people of the Northern Mariana Islands in the U.S. House of Representatives. He began service on January 6, 2009 and has been reelected to office five times.
In the 116th Congress the Congressman became Chair of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education of the House Committee on Education and Labor and is a Member of the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Investment. He also serves as Vice Chair for Insular Affairs on the House Committee on Natural Resources with leadership responsibility for all insular area issues and is a Member on its Water, Oceans, and Wildlife Subcommittee. As the lone representative of the Marianas in Congress, Sablan has also been granted a waiver from the Democratic Caucus Leadership for membership on a third committee. Because of the large number of veterans in the Marianas and the need to improve services to them, Congressman Sablan selected the House Veterans' Affairs Committee. He serves on the Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs Subcommittee.
During his six terms in office Congressman Sablan has been responsible for legislation increasing funding to Northern Mariana Islands schools and individual students, to the Commonwealth Healthcare Center, and for water and sewer projects in his district. He expanded federal food and energy assistance for low-income families in his district. And his legislative work resulted in the return of ownership of submerged lands around the Northern Marianas to the people he represents. Congressman Sablan has also taken an active hand in easing the transition from local to federal management of immigration in the Northern Marianas through assistance to individuals, working closely with the U.S. Departments of Homeland Security and Labor on implementing policy, and by enacting into law extensions of a number of transitional policies.
Kilili was born on the island of Saipan on January 19, 1955. He is one of seven children from a large extended family with Chamorro and Hispanic roots.
At the age of 11 Kilili moved to the island of Chuuk to attend the Jesuit Xavier High School, then the only high school in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Being the sole Chamorro student, Kilili learned how to adapt to new environments and institutions and to find common ground with people from different cultures and backgrounds—skills which have served him well as a Member of Congress.
Kilili graduated from Marianas High School on Saipan, then attended the University of Guam before continuing college in Berkeley, California. A family crisis brought him home before his studies were complete, but it was during his college days that Kilili decided to go into public office.
He began service in the administration of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands’ first Governor, Carlos S. Camacho, and then was elected to the 3rd Northern Mariana Islands Legislature in 1981. Kilili was appointed to be a special representative to negotiations with the federal government on continuance of the financial assistance to the islands that had begun with Section 702 of the Covenant of Political Union between the Northern Mariana Islands and the United States. Kilili and his colleagues won a seven-year, full faith and credit commitment from the U.S. for $228 million. This allowed the Commonwealth to secure immediate, “front-end” funding for much-needed capital improvement projects.
After two terms in the Legislature, Kilili was selected to be a Special Assistant in Washington, DC to United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye of Hawai’i, then served in the administrations of Commonwealth Governors Froilan C. Tenorio and Pedro P. Tenorio, before being appointed as Executive Director of the Commonwealth Election Commission.
Kilili served in the Army Reserves from 1981 to 1986.
He is married to Andrea Sablan, and has six children and five grandchildren.

Baker Island Boat Cruise
Each summer, from mid-June through mid-September, a local company offers a five-hour boat cruise to remote, ocean-sculpted Baker Island, as interpreted by an NPS park ranger. A short jaunt on a motorized launch is required to complete the journey, however. Since some visitors with mobility impairments may not be able to participate in the experience, the park commissioned this video by Will Greene, a local filmmaker. Learn more about all of the park's guided tours and boat cruises at ...
