if you are ever in Saitama Prefecture and you're looking to do something fun and interesting, this may be one idea. The Saitama Children's Zoo is not only a zoo, but a nature park, so it's pretty huge. Admission is only 500yen for adults, which is cheaper than the parking. They don't have lion, tigers, elephants, etc. But they do have a good selection of animals. I can't name them all, but the ones that stuck out for me were: the kangaroos, koalas, capybaras (that bathe in their own little hot spring in winter), wallabies, Japanese cranes, lesser pandas, zebras, and giraffes. The zoo is also engineered to bring the animals as close as possible to you, real close. Watch the video.

Higashi Matsuyama Summer Festival 24 July 2011
Towns throughout Japan have a summer festival. The theme of the festival is always to bring luck and prosperity. Portable shrines are carried on the shoulders of the townspeople throughout the town, something like a God delivery service. .
. Towns are divided into smaller residential areas or suburbs and often each has its own shrine, so it is possible to witness up to 10 or more shrines being carried during the festival.
There are always food stands, selling chocolate covered bananas, butter potatoes, fried noodles and other popular snacks. (The Yakuza often run these stalls in larger cities, as the profits are quite good. $4 for a few potatoes and some butter is quite a welcome profit margin.)
Large floats travel around also, usually with musicians banging on Taiko drums and playng flutes. Its usually ad-lib and amatuer in nature - people just having fun and scaring off bad spirits.
Another type of float also moves about - praying floats. Once they stop, you can throw in a 5 yen (5 cent) coin and be blessed. Each one features a specific spirit or character - I personally dont know who they are supposed to be though.
The festival lasted two days and I didnt film all of it. But, if youve never seen a Japanese summer festival before, its a fair representatin of what a smaller towns festival is like.
Its loud, lots of fun and for a moderate town such as Higashi Matsuyama, its possibly the most raucus event of the year.
In other parts of Japan the summer festival theme changes - some areas fly massive kites the size of cars, others have homemade skyrockets, but even these unusual festivals have people carrying the shrines by night - the shrines are the similar factor in all summer festivals to my knowledge.
