Did you know there exists an underwater antelope? The Saiwa Swamp National Park in Trans-Nzoia County is home to the Sitatunga, the rare endangered semi-aquatic antelope that is confined to Marshy and swampy habitats. Kenya has about 100 Sitatungas. This week on Magical Scenes Channel One’s Irene Muchuma-Odim features the Saiwa Swamp National Park in Kitale.

Saiwa National Park is the home of rare semi aquatic antelopes only found in East Africa.

Conservationists partner to restore wetlands in Saiwa swamp

The elephant grass is threatening to colonise the entire Saiwa Swamp, the home of the Sitatunga antelope. And now a group of conservationists partnered with the Community based Kipsaina Crane and Wetlands Conservation Group in Trans Nzoia in an initiative aimed at restoring and protecting wetlands as important biodiversity hot spots.

NEMA, Trans Nzoia government warn against sand harvesting in River Saiwa

The National Environment Management Authority, and the County government of Trans Nzoia are discouraging residents from harvesting sand along River Saiwa which drains water to Saiwa Swamp National Park, the home of the Sitatunga antelope.
