Terrifying Bridge Gives Drivers Panic Attacks!
Terrifying Bridge Gives Drivers Panic Attacks!
Has you seen this bridge before? I've stumbled across pictures of this bridge a few times on the ole' t'internet and I must say, it's a real wow! Sight. Well, check out the video below and you'll get to see the reality behind the images, and at the end you even get a driver's eye view! I hop you're not afraid of heights! The bridge, known as the rollercoaster bridge, is actually called the Eshima Ohashi bridge, and is located in Sakaiminato, in Japan. Amazingly, this extraordinary structure is actually one of the areas top tourist attractions! Some of the imagery, like that you see in the video, has become so well known and widely shared that people are visiting the bridge just to drive over it!
It is an impressive feat of engineering indeed. The reason for the great height is that it's crossing a river used by very large ships, and simply needs to be high so they can safely pass underneath. That said, there are other ways of going about it...tunnels are often used for exactly this reason, or if you think of Tower Bridge in London, (often confused with 'London Bridge') has a road that lifts up like two giant doors to allow large vessels to pass underneath. Of course the major disadvantage is that only one thing can happen at a time, either cars are passing over or boats are passing under, but not both. If it's a very busy shipping lane, then a bridge may be a good option. By the way, Interesting side story, Did you know that an American called Robert P McCulloch actually bought London Bridge, and dismantled it in 1967 and shifted it stone by stone to a lake in the USA where it still resides as a tourist attraction. Although vehemently denied by himself and by Ivan Luckin, the man who sold it to him, the story goes that he actually thought he was buying Tower Bridge, a much more recognisable and iconic tourist attraction. That would make a lot more sense as the bridge he ended up with, the bridge actually called London Bridge, is a pretty dull and unremarkable 19th century functional piece of architecture. Is it possible that to save the enormous embarassment and humiliation he just pretended 'Yeah, that's what I meant, I just wanted a random boring old bridge for my lake' Who knows. I guess we should take them at their word.
A tunnel might not have been the best option either, being Japan, if you start digging around where you're not wanted you may end up disturbing Godzilla in his nest. Just kidding! It probably comes down to money and efficiency, and they've done a great job. Honestly, I would love to drive over this bridge. And if you watch the video to the end you'll get a real sense of what that actually feels like.
But hang on a minute, is it just me or is there something weird about those photos? Now, I know a little bit about photography and I keep seeing pictures of this bridge which look just kind of odd, and I think I know why that might be. If you stand at the start of a long road, it tapers of into the distance. But if you stand a mile away and look at it through a camera lens and then zoooom right in, the perspective effect is flattened, because relative to where your standing the distances in your picture are shorter. If you stand actually on the road, at the place your standing the width will take up your who field of vision, but off in the distance it's tiny. Stand on a hill 3 miles away and the start of the road looks small and the end of the road maybe a bit smaller.
And apparently there are services available especially for people who can't drive over the bridge, drivers who'll drive your car while you sit in the back covering your eyes! So there clearly is something rather remarkable about the bridge after all. Watching the video you can see why it's called the rollercoaster bridge, it has that same sense of build-up as a roller coaster as it just goes up and up and up and up and then over the top! It's pretty freaky! And I think what really adds to the sense of height and insecurity is it's so narrow! I couldn't believe how narrow it was, there's only one lane of traffic on either side! And going up something of such height with nothing but a sheer drop on either side and such narrow lanes, up and up and up, it's quite hypnotic, and I can well understand why drivers have had panic attacks, can you imagine being afraid of heights and coming up on this bridge unawares? And then oooover the top! So have a look at the video and tell us what you think. Has the horror and awesomeness of this bridge been exagerated? Or is it in fact a blooming awesome architectural and engineering marvel that you would LOVE the chance to drive over! Let us know in the comments and share this with your friends and family who may have never seen the amazing Ohashi bridge.

Japan Trip : Yunotsu, hot spring in World Heritage Site Ōda, Shimane, Japan
Yunotsu has peak evaluation, well-known hot spring in World Heritage Site Ōda, Shimane, Japan

Yunotsu, of the coast of the Sea of Japan, used to be known as a port town. Until the beginning of the 17th century, it played an important role in shipping silver which was mined at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ‘Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine’. In 2007, Yunotsu was designated as a part of the “World Heritage Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and its Cultural Landscape”. Ryokans, Japanese style inns, and shops line the streets and visitors can soak up the the tranquil atmosphere of a town with such a long history.
The nearby ports of Okidomari and Tomogaura were used to ship away the silver from the Iwami Ginzan Mines. The ports feature Hanaguri-Iwa, special rocks that were used to moor boats to. These can be seen at Okidomari by taking a five minute hike around the bay. The narrow nature trail to the rocks starts at a little bridge that crosses the small creek on the right side of the dock.
The former roads, used to transport the silver from the the mining area to the ports, are now hiking trails. The trail to Okidomari and Yunotsu is 12 kilometers long and passes nearby two castle ruins, while the trail to Tomogaura is 7 kilometers long. There is a possibility of doing a loop hike as Yunotsu and Tomogaura (near Maji Station) are connected by the JR Sanin train line.
Yunotsu is a station along the JR Sanin Line, one hour by limited express train (approx. 3000 yen) or two hour by local train (1490 yen) from Matsue. The town center is a 10-15 minute walk or short bus ride (140 yen) from Yunotsu Station. Okidomari is another 15 minute walk northwest of the town center.
If coming from Omori Town, take a bus to Nima or Oda-shi Station and transfer to the JR Sanin Line to Yunotsu. With a good connection, the journey takes about 45 minutes via Nima Station or about one hour via Oda-shi Station, but note that the train and bus service in the region is rather infrequent.
The 5 Scariest Bridges On Earth
A bridge is defined as “a connecting, transitional, or intermediate route or phase between two adjacent elements, activities, conditions, or the like.” Bridges are important for any kind of transportation because they provide safe passageway for people traveling over bodies of water, valleys or roads. Even though bridges are precisely engineered structures with strength that can support hundreds and even thousands of cars and automobiles, they are sometimes traumatizing to look at and scary to cross. There are a number of bridges in the world that certainly cause travelers to fear for their lives, most likely causing several panic attacks.
The Glass Skywalk at China’s Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie National Park is the world’s longest glass-bottom bridge stretching 1,410 feet and spanning two cliffs over a 984-foot drop. The footbridge was designed by Israeli architect Haim Dotan, who says the bridge can hold up to 800 people at once. The Skywalk also stole the title of highest bungee jump from Macau Tower’s 764-foot-high attraction. Eshima Ohashi Bridge is another scary bridge because it’s more like a roller coaster. The concrete road bridge spans one mile across Lake Nakaumi in Japan, connecting the cities Matsue and Sakaiminato. Eshima Ohashi Bridge has a gradient of 6.1% on one side and 5.1% on the other, making for an interesting roller coaster ride.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge: Saving drivers too scared to cross
Millions of Americans will be on the road heading back from the beach on the Labor Day holiday, which marks the end of summer in the US.
For those in the state of Maryland, that journey may involve driving across the long and notoriously nerve-racking Chesapeake Bay Bridge, ranked as one of the scariest in the world to cross.
The trip is too much for some motorists, who pay someone else to drive them and their cars across the water.
The BBC spent the day with Brittney Manzoni, a driver with Kent Island Express, to find out what gives the bridge its fearsome reputation.

High Speed Ferry From Japan to Korea
the high speed ferry that takes you from Japan's 7th largest (kyushu's largest) city; Fukuoka to South Korea's 2nd largest city: Busan. From Japan to Korea via boat in under 3 hours.
I got sea sick as the waves were really choppy and the boat went very high speed (twice the speed of regular ships) coupled with sharp turns made me want to throw up a couple of times...
(and I love to ride rollercoasters!)

Moving Queensland forward 1926 -2016 | Sir Leo Hielscher | TEDxYouth@BGS
A reflection on the Queensland economy in its various phases dating from 1926 to 2016. Advice is given on personal growth and development leading to success.
Retiring at age 83, after 68 years in the public service, Sir Leo made an unrivalled contribution to Queensland since he took a job with the state audit office in 1942, aged 15. He established Gladstone as an industrial and resources hub, negotiated key contracts with mining companies to secure royalties for taxpayers, facilitated the development of Griffith University, Queensland's casino industry and two coal terminals, and established the Queensland Treasury Corporation.
He developed and fully funded the state's long-term superannuation and employee liabilities, and he drove the planning, financing and construction of the first Gateway bridge in the early 1980s. As a tribute to his services, the dual Gateway bridges were re-named as the Sir Leo Hielscher bridges.

China has built the world’s highest bridge and it’s surrounded by clouds
Images of China’s Beipanjiang Bridge show it shrouded by clouds and surrounded by mountains.
It stands an incredible 565 metres (1,854 feet) above a river and connects mountainous provinces Yunnan and Guizhou, the Guizhou provincial transport department said in a statement.
As well as looking impressive, the bridge has a practical purpose, cutting travel times by as much as three quarters.
One truck driver said it meant the journey between the two areas was a one hour drive instead of four hours.
He added that it is ‘very convenient for people who want to travel between these two places’.
It is 1,341 metres long and cost 1 billion yuan (£117 million) to build, according to local newspaper Guizhou Daily. The previous record holder for the world’s highest bridge is also in China – the Si Du River Bridge in Hubei.
But the world’s tallest bridge – measured by the height of its own structure rather than the distance to the ground – is France’s Millau viaduct at 343 metres.
