Madhav National Park : Sakhya Sagar Lake, Madhya Pradesh
Sakhya Sagar Lake is situated in Madhav National Park in the Gwalior district of Madhra Pradesh.
A boat-man cleans his lunch dishes in the lake, with a backdrop of Scindia family statues and pillared varandahs from the British ara. This area fell within the Scindia state of pre-Independent India. The Victorian looking statues at the boat house probably came from Europe. A Common or Eurasian Kingfisher sits on an electric wire even as a patch of water lilies flowers at the edge of the lake.

Chattri
A Chattri was built by the Scindia rulers. The structure has two main cenotaphs. The one shown in the picture is the older one dedicated to the dowager queen Maharani Sakhya Raje Scindia while the one built on opposite side is a newer one dedicated to her son Madho Rao Scindia, the grandfather of former railway minister of India Madhavrao Scindia.
Both cenotaphs are surrounded by Mughal gardens and have a streak of fountains between them.
Chhatari (memorial or cenotaph) made of ornate marble is a fine example of workmanship.
Madhav National Park
The Madhav National Park surrounds the Sakhya Sagar Lake. It has variety of wild animals and birds. It used to have a significant number of tigers but these have vanished due to poor maintenance and transference of tigers to other national parks.
George Castle
George Castle stands on the highest point of the National Park. It was built by George Jivajirao Scindia for a overnight stay for tiger shooting by British king George V while he was to pass that way during his visit to India in 1911. However, the king shot a tiger on the way itself and thus did not stop at the castle.
Madhav Vilas Palace
Madhav Vilas Palace was the official residence of the Scindias during summer. It is situated in the heart of the city and is surrounded by dense gardens and forest.
It has now been converted into a training centre of the Intelligence Bureau of India giving the city a distinction of being among the very few cities in country that have a IB training centre.
Tatya Tope Memorial
Tatya Tope, a leader of Indian Rebellion of 1857 and a close aide of Rani of Jhansi, was publicly hanged on 18 April 1859 from a peepal tree. A memorial and a statue of Tatya Tope has been erected at the site.

Sakhya Sagar Lake and Boat Club are located in the vicinity of the Madhav National Park in the Shivpuri District. The Madhav Sagar Lake and Sakhya Sagar Lake, created on the Manier River in 1918, are two of the prominent lakes of the region and are also important biodiversity support systems.
The Sakhya Sagar Lake lies at the edge of the forests of the Madhav National Park and has a boat club that is also known as the Sailing Club. Tourists visiting the Sailing Club can see various reptiles, like the Indian python, marsh crocodile and monitor lizard.
It was here that the famous ruler Tatya Tope was hanged to death on the 18th of April 1859 for revolting against the English authorities. Thus, you will find a memorial in the name of Tatya Tope here as a remembrance of battle for independence. You will see the sculpture of Tatya Tope with a swort in the hand fighting for freedom and self-respect. Surrounded by trees, this sculpture looks magnificent and reminds you of Maratha valour.

Scindia cenotaphs, George Castle and wildlife at Madhav National Park, Shivpuri
Deep inside the Madhav National Park, at its highest point, stands the exquisite George Castle at a height of almost 484 m or 1597 feet. Interestingly the castle was built by Jivaji Rao Scindia of the Gwalior royal family for an overnight halt for tiger shooting by the British King George V when he was to pass that way during his visit to India in 1911. Ironically, it so happened that the emperor could shoot a tiger on the way itself and did not stop at Madhav.
Shivpuri is famous for graceful, intricately embellished Marble chhatris or cenotaphs erected by Scindia Princes. Set in an elaborate Mughal Garden, are the cenotaphs, the royal Chhatries dedicated to Scindias.
Facing each other across a water tank are the Chhatries of Madhav Rao Scindia and dowager queen Maharani Sakhya Raje Scindia, in a delightful fusion of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles, with their shikhara – type spires and Rajput and Mughal pavilions. Ceremonially attired retainers, with flowers and incense, tend to both cenotaph house life-size images of the Scindias, and these religiously.
The Madhav National Park is flanked by the Sakhya Sagar Lake. It was created back in the 1920s on the Manier River in the district of Shivpuri. One can find a large number of reptiles, marsh crocodiles, Indian Pythons and Monitor Lizards in it.
