Sakkarbaug is very famous zoological garden in Junagadh city of Gujarat.and is spreaded over 210 acres.
This zoo remain close every Wednesday and on other days it's visiting timing is 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
The Sakkarbaug Zoo was established in 1863 by The Mohabat khanji Babi-II of Junagadh state. It is second oldest zoo of India and fourth biggest zoo in India.

Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden - Junagadh
This is India's oldest and largest zoo and worlds 3rd largest zoo. This zoo is located in Junagadh city. Accessible from junagadh Railway stations and bus stations.
Zoo is home to 525 mammals , 597 birds, and 111 reptiles, housed in 100 enclosures.
It has many animal and birds to watch. Animal's found locally like Asiatic Lion, Deer etc is main attraction. This zoo provides Asian lion to other zoo of india and world. This zoo also have Museums where there are many species skeleton. Like Asiatic lion.
When i visited in March 2016. There was renovation work was going on, hence many cage were empty.but i guess they were extending capacity of zoo. Means many species are going to come here.
His is wonderful place for animal lover. I will strongly recommend this place to visit.
Entry Fees Rs 20 & Camera Fees Depends Upon Camera U are Using Varies from Rs 20 to Rs 2000, They Variety Of Species Of Birds, Reptiles, Lions, Leopards, Tigers, Deers, And All Major Animals, Best part was White Tiger, It was huge.

Zoo authorities in Gujarat rejoiced the birth of four ostrich babies, as they were successful in providing conducive environment to the largest living species of bird that cannot fly.
We brought an Ostrich pair in Sakkarbaug zoo about a year ago and they have successfully bred a few days ago, said Director of Sakkarbaug zoo, V.J Rana.
The zoo officials of Sakkarbaug Zoo in Junagadh brought an ostrich pair from a zoo in Chennai in 2012. The Zoo authorities made sure that they left no stone unturned in taking good care of the rare birds.
The babies are already twenty days old, healthy and have started taking food on their own.
Ostrich lays eggs twice in a year and feed on grass and insects. It is one of the rare birds in the world that cannot fly. But it can run at a very fast speed of 70 kilometres per hour. They are generally found in Savannas and Sahel regions of Africa.
The Zoo authorities made special arrangements for the pair to ensure comfortable incubation and birth of the ostrich babies.
We have been taking precautionary steps from the beginning so that the pair is not disturbed. We covered the public viewing area so that the pair is not troubled. The ostrich generally lays their eggs in the sand and so accordingly we arranged a similar environment for them. We made a shed in their enclosure and sprayed water from time to time to reduce the heat in the cage, said the Curator, Ravi Chauhan.

History: The Sakkarbaug Zoo was established in 1863 by The Babi Nawabs of Junagadh state. It is the second oldest zoo of India and fourth biggest zoo in India.
In 2003 the zoo opened a natural history museum in a large hall in the veterinary hospital. The museum opened with the skeletons of two Asiatic lions, as well as a panther, deer, wild boar, antelope, black buck, blue bull, and spotted deer. Eggs, beaks, and feathers of various birds were also on display. The museum will be expanded as specimens become available.[4]
In 2008 the Sakkarbaug Zoo Management Advisory Society (initially with 10 members) was formed to develop and manage the zoo and its finances.
In 2009, Sakkarbaug Zoo became the only zoo in India to hold African cheetahs when it traded three of its lions with a Singapore zoo for two pairs of cheetahs. The last cheetah at the zoo had died over 60 years ago in 1946.
In 2011 the zoo received Indian gaur, Malabar giant squirrels, marmosets, and green pheasants from Mysore Zoo in exchange for a pair of Asian lions. At this time, the zoo claimed to have 40 lions and lionesses in their genetic pool.
The zoo has been criticized for the size of some of its enclosures but claims that it is in the process of upgrading them to meet the standards of the Central Zoo Authority of India (CZA), and hopes to be done by 2013.

Bears are protected under schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. All trade and export of their body parts has been banned. The forest department also gives compensation for bear attacks if there is a death or injury.
