Sakurai Futamigaura Husband and Wife (the married couple rocks)It is noted for its scenic beauty and is selected as one of a hundred famous beaches and sunsets in Japan. It is located in the north of the city.
The rocks are standing in the ocean approximately 150 meters away from the beach. Sakurai Futamigaura has been honored as a holy place and the location of Sakura Shrine, which is a cultural property of Fukuoka Prefecture.

We took a 3 hour train to get to Hakata to meet up with a college friend who lives there. Laura-Mae ended up staying in Japan after her years in the JET program and lives in Itoshima. Come with us as we wander through beaches, mountain shrines, and the most green scenery in the Japanese countryside. It was so beautiful!

Fukuoka is famous for its peculiar and historic culture. We decided to show you two of the most significant cultural experiences of Hakata's culture. This is also the last video with Marcel who finished his internship and went back to Austria :(
Meoto Iwa in Itoshima (糸島)
Just 30 minutes by car outside of Fukuoka is a quaint city called Itoshima. With a population of a little over 100,000, this coastal city has plenty of attractions and coastline cafes that make you want to settle down, buy a golden retriever, and spend your days walking along the beach as the sunsets. Itoshima is popular for its beaches in the summer and its oysters in the winter. But, perhaps its most popular attraction throughout the year is the great floating torii gate that rests in the Genkai Sea. A short ride down Shima sunset road and you will come across this wonderful attraction. Just behind the floating torii are two rocks called Meoto-iwa that are eternally joined together by a shimenawa. The shimenawa is a Shinto rope used for warding off evil spirits and protecting the sacred areas that lie behind its ropes. This particular shimenawa is 30 meters long and weighs 1 ton. Meoto-iwa, also known as Couple Rock, along with the floating torii attracts thousands of visitors to Itoshima every year. Sometime either late April or early May of every year, a grand ceremony is held to replace the one-ton Shimenawa. This procedure requires 50 men to venture over to the rocks, climb them, and complete the arduous task of hanging the straw garland from one rock to the other.

Hey there, family and friends! Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) this year was only a long weekend of 5 days so Nathan and I managed to escape to Fukuoka - a much needed break from the monotony of our lives in Korea. (It was also my birthday weekend so I really didn't want to stay cooped up in Daegu.) If you thought we ate some weird stuff in Taipei, wait 'til you see what we tried this time around!
We also rented a car and took a road trip to Itoshima, which was probably my absolute favorite part - aside from our lovely izakaya friends at Hakata Fudo. Shout out to Iero (spelling?), Yuta, and everyone else! You guys are awesome!
