Australia: Travels in Tasmania
Informative and entertaining travel documentary about Australia's island state of Tasmania that covers many of the outstanding scenic, wildlife and cultural aspects of this special place. Your guide, Robert Stephens, takes you to Battery Point, Rektango, Salamanca Market and MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) in Hobart. He then heads to Bruny Island to go on Bruny Island Cruise, then to the 500 acre Inala Conservation Property of Dr, Tonia Cochran. She shows the rescued wildlife in her care that includes an Albino Bennetts Wallaby, a red neck Bennetts Wallaby and a Rufous Bellied Pademelon. Dr. Cochran also talks about her work with one of Australia's rarest birds, the forty spotted Pardolote. The tour finishes on Bruny with a visit to see a wild Echidna at South Bruny Island National Park and Lighthouse, and a dusk vigil to see the the Little or Fairy Penguins at the Bruny Island Isthmus Rookery. The tour heads north to the Midlands towns of Ross and Oatlands, and then on Launceston and Tasmania Zoo to see Tasmanian Devils up close. As the video closes, Robert heads to the Freycinet Peninsula to see Wineglass Bay. The Salamanca Arts Centre community has come together for a weekend of festivities to mark its 35th anniversary.

Tassie’s capital city and my home town, it was safe to say I was excited to return to Hobart. Driving into Hobart is a drive I’ve taken many times in my life, crossing the Derwent river and winding into Davey Street still feels very familiar but far more developed than I remember. The classics are still here I notice as I pass Muirs and Flippers the floating fish and chippery… but there is something new, a different energy in the wharfside air. Hidden doors, subtle designer signage and trendy 20-somethings are a dead giveaway that Hobart has found its cool factor.
One of the oldest cities in Australia, second to Sydney, the town’s history can be easily seen in its buildings and it was the architecture that we had come to see. Moss Hotel, wedged in the middle of the action at Salamanca Place, is the most perfect example of old and new. An understated green transparent door on one of the busiest streets in Hobart, takes you through to a quiet oasis of converted history - iconic from its convict days as well as its more recent history as Surreal nightclub. This character remains, with stories to be told in every turn.
Not only a hot spot for boutique designer hotels, Hobart now claims itself as a modern foodie heaven - with spots like Agrarian Kitchen, Frank’s and Templo just a few from many exciting Hobart restaurants. Not to mention a haven for art and culture junkies with the arrival of Mona (Museum of Old and New Art) in the early 2000s. David Walsh’s decision to plant this forward thinking display of contemporary art in the suburbs of North Hobart, was a huge statement in itself. Given that previously the closest North Hobart had got to culture was the Derwent Entertainment Centre, which as any Tasmanian will tell you, is not quite the same thing. This belief in Hobart as a destination created pride amongst locals and inspired many of independent creators to follow.

Hobart | Tasmania Travel Diary
Sometimes it takes a while to see the wonders in your own backyard. This was my first trip to Tasmania, the tiny island state off the south east coast of Australia. Its capital Hobart is a harbour city for food lovers that buzzes on weekends, with the famous Salamanca Market stretching for miles, and the edgy art gallery MONA attracting an international audience.

Et comme ça tu pourras découvrir en vrai, par toi-même, le BARCELONA BAR, les concerts du vendredi soir au Salamanca Arts Centre, LE MARCHE du samedi matin, le café JACKMAN & MCROSS, les rues plein de monuments – MACQUARIE STREET et Davey Street, et bien plus de trucs encore !
Bon le MONT WELLINGTON est aussi pas mal réputé, pour le faire à vélo, mais bon sachant qu’on avait un trip « tout à vélo » derrière, on s’est dit que c’était pas nécessaire, vous êtes pas d’accord ! : )

Hobart Travel Guide - Australia Amazing Adventure
Hobart is the capital city of the Australian state of Tasmania. Hobart is small and intimate compared to larger mainland Australian cities, reflecting the small size of the state. The metropolitan area stretches north and south along the Derwent River, crossed by several bridges. Notable for being one of the coldest Australian cities, it has a mild temperate oceanic climate, with four distinct seasons.
Founded in 1804 by Colonel David Collins, Hobart is the second oldest city in Australia. It grew out of the penal settlement on the island at Risdon Cove, eight kilometres up river, which was founded in 1803 and abandoned five months later for the present site of Hobart. The city has many beautiful historic buildings and precincts, especially in the area around the river. There are many fine examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture, such as Salamanca Place, which has a terrace of warehouses dating back to the whaling days of the 1830s. Nearby Battery Point, the original seamen's quarters of the city and Macquarie and Davey Street offer more than 60 buildings classified by the National Trust.
Hobart is a harbour town – a port city where the world rushes in on the tide and ebbs away again, bringing with it influences from afar and leaving the locals buzzing with global zeitgeist. Or so the theory goes. These days, Hobart’s waterfront precinct is certainly abuzz, with old pubs alongside new craft-beer bars, myriad cafes, museums, festivals, ferries, fishing boats, yachts, accommodation and a floating pier upholding fine restaurants…all of it washed with sea-salty charm and a sense of history. On a sunny afternoon, there are few more pleasant places to find yourself.
Riding high above the city is kunanyi/Mt Wellington, a craggy basalt beast seemingly made for mountain biking and bushwalking. Known as kunanyi by local Aboriginal people, and just 'the mountain' by everybody else, this 1271m-high monolith both defines the city below and shelters it. Drive to the summit in any season – you're assured of either a show-stopping view or an out-of-time, lunar, cloud-shrouded experience, wandering around between snowdrifts, lichen-dappled boulders and the stunted plants that somehow survive in these lofty skies. Finally, barrel back down to the waterfront on a mountain-bike tour like no other.
Hobart has a profusion of eating establishments ranging from the cheap to the luxuriously expensive. Freshly caught seafood is a specialty of the region, and there are several excellent seafood restaurants. Deep-sea Trevalla is unique to Tasmania and must be tried. Tasmanian lobster is also excellent. Scallop pie is also unique to Tasmania and can be easily purchased from the Salamanca Market food stalls. Restaurants are concentrated in the Salamanca and North Hobart areas.
There are several good options when it comes to getting around Hobart. By and far the most convenient would be having a private vehicle but biking, walking, public transit, and taxis are all good options too. The public bus system in Hobart can actually be fairly complicated. There are more than a dozen different fare types (and prices) depending on route/location, planned destination, concession types, time of day (sometimes) and more. On the plus side, schedules tend to be clearly posted, buses tend to be on time, staff is generally very patient, friendly, and helpful, and drivers can give change, so exact coin when purchasing a ticket is not necessary.
