Between 1905 and 1911, lava flowing from Mt. Matavanu claimed much land and many buildings in this area. The ruins are at once fascinating and quite eerie. Today this part of the north east Savaii coast is one of the most varied landscapes on Samoa with vegetation now slowly reclaiming the inrteresting and varied textures of the lava itself.
You can walk all the way to the coast from the main road in about 45 minutes but it can get quite hot and strong shoes are highly recommended.

사바이섬 북동쪽 해안을 달리다 보면 살레아울라 용암평원이 나온다. 오래전 이곳은 화산이 폭발하면서 용암으로 완전히 뒤덮여 폐허가 됐다. 그런데 이곳엔 기적의 장소로 불리는 곳이 있다. 그중 하나가 바로 ‘기적의 교회’ 화산 폭발에도 파괴되지 않고 형체가 그대로 남아 있는 곳이다. 때문에 사람들은 이곳을 신성하게 여긴다. 또 한 곳은 ‘처녀의 무덤’으로 불리는 곳인데, 화산 활동 전에 억울하게 죽은 수녀의 무덤이라고 한다. “그녀가(족장의 딸) 죽은 후, 화산활동이 있었음에도 이 꽃들이 아직까지 살아 있는 것이 놀랍지 않나요?” 용암이 흘러내려 섬을 뒤덮었는데도 유독 이 무덤만큼은 비켜서 흘러갔다고 하니 신기할 따름이다. “신비했고 흥미로웠어요. 화산활동이 있었음에도 묘지가 전혀 훼손되지 않았다는 것이 놀랍네요. 그리고 족장 딸의 무덤이 이렇게 오랫동안 보전되어 있는 것도 놀라워요.” 기적의 무덤으로 불리기도 하는 이곳은 신비한 이야기와 함께 여행객들의 호기심을 자극하고 있다.

The eruption of Mount Matavanu in Gaga'emauga, Savai'i, Samoa, back in 1905-1911, had erased entire villages and hundreds of villagers in its wake.
