Salisbury Beach Ma. - Himalaya
Video Recorded: Summer 1990:
Since the 1920's four generations of my family (and I'm sure a lot of other families) have enjoyed the rides at Salisbury Beach. For me it was the 60's & 70's with great memories of the rides at Shaheen's Fun O Rama, especially the Himalaya. For my kids and others growing up in the 80's and early 90's Pirates Park was what they remember as the Himalaya and other rides were relocated there before sadly disappearing forever, or so it seems.

State of emergency declared in 5 states
A howling storm across the Northeast left the New York-to-Boston corridor shrouded in 1 to 3 feet of snow Saturday, stranding motorists on highways overnight and piling up drifts so high that some homeowners couldn't get their doors open. More than 650,000 homes and businesses were left without electricity.
Due to rising tides in Massachusetts, authorities are enforcing mandatory evacuations in the area of Salisbury Beach Saturday morning.
Authorities are going door-to-door asking residents of that area to evacuate. Massachusetts State Police are assisting the National Guard in the evacuations.
At least three deaths in the U.S. were blamed on the wind-whipped snowstorm, including that of a New York man killed when the tractor he was using to plow his driveway ran off the edge of the road. At least three more deaths in Canada were reported.
More than 38 inches of snow fell in Milford, Conn., and an 82 mph gust was recorded in nearby Westport. Areas of southeastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire got at least 2 feet of snow, with more falling. Portland, Maine, received 29.3 inches, breaking the record set in 1979.
Roads in many places were impassable. Across much of New England, snowed-over cars looked like white blobs. Streets were mostly deserted save for snowplow crews and a few hardy souls walking dogs or venturing out to take pictures. In Boston's Financial District, the only sound was an army of snowblowers clearing sidewalks.
The city of Quincy, Massachusetts remained without power Saturday morning.
Mayor Thomas Koch told MyFoxBoston.com that a major transmission line that feeds the city was down. Koch said that they would not be able to repair the line until a helicopter could fly to assess the situation.
That's what concerns me the most right now, Koch said.
Plowing we can get to but we need to get the power on for people. Koch said that in addition to the shelter at Quincy High School , North Quincy High School would also be opened for people seeking shelter.
We will go and pick (people) up and bring them to the shelter, said Koch.
The city lost power late Friday night. Quincy police said that the police department was running on generator power. The city's 911 system was not affected.
The digging-out went more smoothly in some places than in others as governors began lifting travel bans for parts of states.
A little more than 11 inches fell in New York, but the city dodged a bullet and was in great shape, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, predicting streets would be cleared by the end of the day. The New York region's three major airports -- LaGuardia, Kennedy and Newark, N.J. -- were up and running again by late morning after shutting down the evening before.
But hundreds of motorists abandoned their vehicles on New York's Long Island, and even snowplows were getting stuck. Emergency workers used snowmobiles to try to reach stranded motorists, some of whom spent the night in their cars.

Salisbury Beach Firemen's Muster
Bring your camera!!
An antique hand pumped fire engine muster where crews pump their machines to see who can play the longest stream of water. This is the oldest organized sport in the United States.
Spectators are invited to try out pumping the machines!
For more information on the sport and the machines visit:
The first firemen’s muster was held on July 4th, 1849 in Bath, Maine. It was a competition among crews with hand pumped fire engines to see who could shoot the longest stream of water. The tradition has been kept alive into the 21st century; every year on a Saturday close to July 4th, another muster is held in Bath.
On November 20th, 1890, the New England States Veteran Firemen’s League was founded in Boston. Musters were held all over New England, often attracting 50 or 60 entrants.
There are two classes of machine: A and B. The class is determined by the size of the cylinders. Each machine is allowed 15 minutes on the pumping platform to shoot as many streams as their crew can manage.
A suction hose goes into the water tank, which is kept full from a hydrant or a tanker truck. The foreman stands on top and keeps an eye on optimal wind conditions. The pipe crew handles the nozzle and aims the powerful spray down the line of red resin paper that is the playing field.
The judges measure the farthest flung dime sized drop of water to determine who wins each class.
