GHOST OF ~ Gold Hill~ North Carolina
A trip along the Gold Hill Rail-Trail through this historic village will transport you back to a time when North Carolina was the country's only gold-producing state. Signs posted every few hundred feet along the mile-long dirt and gravel path detail the history of mining in the state.
While gold was unofficially discovered here in 1799 by a 12-year-old boy, in its glory days Gold Hill was the richest mining property east of the Mississippi.
There have been many deaths in the town of Gold Hill.
Many people feel the hair stand up on the back of their necks when in the powder house.
Another story is of a young man named Joe Newman. Joe was the brother of a “colorful con-man” named Walter George Newman. He became very distraught with the way his brother handled the mines in Gold Hill. This, along with the loss of a love, began to take toll on Joe.
On April 17, 1900, Joe placed several sticks of dynamite on his chest and took his own life. Some say that his brother, George, had something to do with it, but authorities couldn’t prove any foul play.
George Newman died in 1918. Both spirits have been spotted in Gold Hill. The dismembered body of Joe was seen floating in the air near Randolph Mine. George Newman has been seen walking the streets of Gold Hill, as if the town were still in his control.
Randolph Mine in Gold Hill has the distinction of being haunted by two ghosts, so when lights are seen in the area, no one is really sure which ghost is responsible. The first tragedy occurred in 1842, when a young man named Aaron Klein came to Gold Hill to work in the local mines. He soon won the affection of one Elizabeth Moyle, and together they planned to be married that Christmas. Unfortunately for Aaron, Elizabeth had been courted by Big Stan Cukla before Aaron showed up, and Big Stan wasn't happy with the way things had turned out. One night, Stan mortally wounded a puppy Aaron had been keeping, and left the pup whimpering near the mine shaft. When Aaron went looking for his dog, he heard the cries, but about the time he found the puppy with its skull crushed, Big Stan lunged at him from the darkness, pushing him down the mine shaft. Aaron's body was never found, although everybody knew Cukla was responsible. Soon afterward, however, a strange light began appearing at the mine, following people around and, according to some, making whimpering noises like a wounded puppy. Cukla never got the chance to pick up again with Elizabeth, as he was found dead at the bottom of a mineshaft a few months later, and many in town believed Aaron's ghost put him there.
Then in the early 1900's, as the mine continued to produce, two brothers named Walter and Joe Newman bought the property. Walter was well known to be a greedy man, so when his brother Joe was killed in an unexplained explosion at home in 1918, people assumed that Walter had killed his brother, but no one was ever able to find any evidence of foul play. Thus Walter succeeded in taking over full control of the mine, but soon his workers began seeing eerie lights and hearing strange noises in the mine shafts. Eventually, the miners refused to work at the site, and so Walter was never able to realize the full potential of the mine. The locals said the noises were Walter's brother Joe, making sure that Walter's crime did not go unpunished.
My husband and I recendtly visited Gold Hill, NC for the 2008 ghost tour. We took several pictures and caught some images and orbs in a few of them the strangest one was and image in the powder house doorway. The powder house was were they stored the dynamite in the 1800's.
