we're here because we're here - Salisbury highlights
Hundreds of volunteers led by Salisbury Playhouse were part of a UK-wide event that took place on 1 July 2016 as a modern memorial to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. Commissioned by 14-18 NOW the work was conceived and created by Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller in collaboration with Rufus Norris, Director of the National Theatre.
The specially commissioned event saw around 1400 voluntary participants dressed in First World War uniform appear unexpectedly in locations across the UK.
Salisbury Playhouse was one of 27 organisations which collaborated on the work, called ‘we’re here because we’re here’. It was produced by Birmingham Repertory Theatre and the National Theatre, working in close collaboration with partners including: Lyric Theatre Belfast, Manchester Royal Exchange, National Theatre of Scotland, National Theatre Wales, Northern Stage, Playhouse Derry-Londonderry, Sheffield Theatres and Theatre Royal Plymouth.
The project was supported by: Aberystwyth Arts Centre, The Belgrade Theatre, Bolton Octagon, Bristol Old Vic, Storyhouse, Left Coast, Leicester Curve, Nuffield Theatre, Oldham Coliseum, Pontio, Shetland Arts, Sutton Coldfield College BMet, The Artrix Bromsgrove, The Garrick Lichfield and Volcano.
‘we’re here because we’re here’ was made possible by an Ambition for Excellence Award from Arts Council England, with additional support from Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Creative Scotland and Art Fund. 14-18 NOW is principally funded by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England, and by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport

NIGHT MUST FALL
by Emlyn Williams
When charming, smooth-talking Dan arrives unexpectedly at old Mrs Bramson’s remote woodland home he soon ingratiates his way into her life and that of her beautiful niece Olivia. But when a local woman goes missing and rumours in the press of a murder surface among the household, fingers begin to point. Has the past finally caught up with Dan and could he really be capable of murder? As the police close in, and with the press baying for blood, is anyone safe?
This psychological thriller from master playwright Emlyn Williams has all the tension, atmosphere and suspicion of the best British mysteries and will leave you on the edge of your seat.
A star cast includes Gwen Taylor (Barbara, Coronation Street and Heartbeat), Daragh O'Malley (Sharpe), Niamh McGrady (Holby City & The Fall) and Will Featherstone (Romeo and Juliet for Shakespeare’s Globe, The History Boys for Sheffield Crucible and Channel 4’s Fresh Meat).

Duet For One at Salisbury Playhouse, MONDAY 10 – SATURDAY 15 SEPTEMBER
MONDAY 10 – SATURDAY 15 SEPTEMBER
Originally enjoying an acclaimed run in the West End, Tom Kempinski’s multi award-winning play comes to Salisbury.
In this powerful, deeply moving and poignantly funny play, Stephanie Abrahams (Belinda Lang), a brilliant concert violinist who seemingly has it all, is forced to re-evaluate her life when struck down by an unforeseen tragedy.
Faced with a truth too difficult to comprehend, she consults psychiatrist Dr Feldmann (Jonathan Coy) and through a series of highly charged encounters is led to examine her deepest emotions and finally consider a future without music.
This dazzling play, featuring two of British theatre’s finest actors, is a gripping, witty and ultimately life-enhancing tribute to the human spirit.
