Salmon River Trail to Frustration Falls- Hiking Oregon Trails- Episode 9- Detailed Trail Review
Your video guide to the oregon outdoors.
In this episode we we are headed to the Mt Hood National Forest where we hike the Upper Salmon River Trail # 742 to a wonderful waterfall called Frustrations Falls. We were hoping to see a few spawning salmon in the river, but we found something better. Probably one of the amazing waterfalls I have seen in some years within Oregon.
This is a great place to go Camping, Backpacking, Hiking, Fishing, Climbing, kayaking and much more.
Hoping each of you can get up and get out and explore this wonderful place within Oregon.
Oregon Exploration is all about giving fellow hikers, fisherman, climbers, and paddlers knowledge about the variety of places within the Oregon Outdoors. We hope that with this knowledge it will allow for you to pick a place that will create a second story for years to come.
The Wild and Scenic Salmon River
This hike follows the Salmon River upstream into the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness. The trail starts out at river level passing through stands of very large trees, then climbs high above the deep gorge where hidden waterfalls can be heard but not seen. Incredibly, there was a proposal in the 1960s to dam the river and build a highway through here. Fortunately that didn't happen. This is now designated wilderness, and the river is the only one in the lower 48 whose entire length is designated as a National Wild and Scenic River.

Salmon River, Welches, OR
A compilation of various trips to my favorite spot in Welches. The footage covers the course of several months, from January to May, so the season change is somewhat noticeable. Everything was shot on the GH2, with Driftwood's moon setting. Lens used were the Olympus 9-18 and 60mm macro, as well as a few with the trusty old 20mm.

Salmon Butte in the Heart of the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness
Salmon Butte is a 4800' peak in the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness. The hike up Salmon Butte is long, but the views at the top are pretty nice, even though the trees have grown up quite a lot since the days when the summit was a site for a fire lookout. You can see Mt. St. Helens, Mt Rainier, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, and Mt. Jefferson on a clear day. I recommend doing this hike in the summer, on a clear day when the flowers are blooming.

Grant's Getaways: Salmon Watch
Many Oregon streams – like Eagle Creek in the Columbia River Gorge – show that summer has past and now, it is fall! The small creek near Bonneville dam is often choked with chinook and coho salmon, and it is a prime site to watch the fish.
The Salmon River near Welches, Oregon also offers a fine spot for a Salmon Watch. Here, the chinook salmon are hard to miss – no longer gleaming silver, the big fish are mottled black and gray.
Salmon at Mouth of Sixes River near Cape Blanco, Oregon
Took this photo last week at the mouth of the sixes River. At about the 17 second mark look to the right bottom quarter of the frame and you will see a large salmon fighting upstream as its back entirely leaves the water. You might want to turn the volume down a bit, as the wind was howling loud just then.
