Nova Scotia Provincial Parks- 2010 Geocaching - Salsman & Battery
Documenting the on-site visits at five provincial parks as part of the Nova Scotia Parks geocaching challenge. You have a passport, and you visit five parks, look for a tree, identify the tree so that you may find the final cache. Inside the geocache, there is a punch to use against your passport. Once you have all five, send it in for a free geocoin.
This video shows the adventure at Salsman Provincial Park in Guysborough county. We also see Battery Provincial Park in St Peter's Cape Breton. From our vantage point we could see The historic St/ Peter's Canal, which connects to the Bras D'Or lakes.
You can also see the forest devastation caused by the beetle attacking the spruce trees.
You can read more about the challenge at the Atlantic Canada Geocaching Association.

Nova Scotia Provincial Parks and ACGA have partnered to provide a new geocaching challenge for the 2010 season. The inaugural launch event will be held at Smiley's Provincial Park on June 19th 2010 (GC25MQ2).
Five official park sanctioned geocaches will be part of the geocaching challenge, which will be spread across five (5) provincial parks in Nova Scotia. The geocaches will be published on June 19th 2010.
The geocache that is part of the passport series was a single stage multi, where after identification of the big pine tree, allowed them to find the final cache location within the park. Wizards of Caching were the FTF on this cache and were given a prize after the event.
At 3pm, a guided walk along the trails was lead by the park supervisor who led a group of over 20 geocachers along the trail to a unique location in the park.
The end of the event had the usual draw for prizes, free night of camping at any provincial park certificates, geocoins, shirts, vests & accessories were handed out, over 20 draws were held.
Prizes were generously donated by NS Parks, ACGA & The North Pace (via The Trail Shop).
Thanks to all of the parks staff at Smiley's and at the head office for their desire to get the program up & running.
How to Play
You will be required to use a passport provided at participating provincial parks or download from ACGA or Nova Scotia Parks. Each passport will list out the rules, disclaimers and more importantly the list of geocaches that are part of the challenge. But before finding the geocaches, you will need to review your knowledge of trees (hardwood, softwood).
As part of the challenge, each of the five geocaches have a central theme; trees.
Once you find the geocache, use the supplied punch to your passport to keep track of your finds. After completing all five geocaches, simply mail in your passport to the address supplied to Nova Scotia Parks and you will receive a limited edition trackable geocoin along with another item thanking you for participating.
About the Geocaches
Each geocache as part of the program is a one stage multi-geocache. When you first get your passport, you will see the starting coordinates of each cache, along with the gc waypoint name. The initial waypoint will lead you to the tree that you will need to identify in order to solve the final stage of the multi. The final location is located within the park and is a winter friendly location.
You will need the geocache listing & the identified tree in order to decrypt the final geocache location. The decryption task should take 2-4 minutes and the only knowledge you need is the correct tree name. The geocache listings won't be published on geocaching.com until June 19th.
The geocaches that are part of the passport program are:
Smiley's (GC270A6)
Amherst Shore (GC28CK8)
Ellenwood (GC28CKD)
Battery (GC279BV)
Salsman (GC2709Y)
The Passport
You can donwload the passport from ACGA or NS Parks.
Where to Play
Located on on the southeast coast of Cape Breton Island, the park is on a hillside overlooking St. Peters Bay.
The lighthouse found in the park serves as a landmark for the entrance to St. Peters Canal. Completed in 1869, the 800 m (2,600 ft.) canal and lock system allow vessels to sail between Bras d' Or Lake and the Atlantic Ocean.
The Park is home to a number of historically significant sites, including the site of a lime kiln used to make plaster and mortar, some of which was used in the construction of Fortress Louisbourg, as well as the remains of two forts that involved in the French and English struggle over the North American continent.
Located on a small peninsula on the east side of Country Harbour, Guysborough County. The park offers campers a quiet setting to relax and enjoy day trips along the Marine Drive. #avoidingchores #VisitNovaScotia #hikingNS

Graves Island Provincial Park - Hiking in Nova Scotia
Quick video on the new walking trail that was built in 2011 at Graves Island Provincial Park.
I've done some research on the island, and sharing the text I've used to create an earth cache.
A drumlin (Irish droimnín, a little hill ridge) is an elongated whale-shaped hill formed by glacial action. Drumlins were formed with their long axes parallel to the direction in which the ice was moving.
Nova Scotia's drumlin fields provide markedly dissimilar landscapes, depending primarily on their suitability for early farming and settlement. Only the drumlins found in Lunenburg and Kejimkujik were extensively exploited for their well-drained loam soils. Here farms still dot the landscape (even though there has been much land abandonment) and provide variety and interest. The other drumlin have poorer soils and historically have supported very little farming.[3]
Those in southwestern Nova Scotia indicate a nearly southerly ice movement becoming southeasterly in eastern Lunenburg and western Halifax counties. Drumlins around Halifax have about the same size and orientation as those in central Lunenburg County. However, from Sheet Harbour east to beyond the Guysborough County border, the drumlins again have a north-south orientation, as if they were formed by ice that moved directly down from the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The few around Canso are oriented more to the southeast. [4]
In general, the ice appears to have moved directly across central and western mainland Nova Scotia from New Brunswick, whereas in eastern Nova Scotia the ice moved southward from Pictou and Antigonish counties and spread out to the east into Chedabucto Bay.[4]
Drumlins do not normally form from granitic material. Those drumlins frequently have a rock core. Occasional granitic drumlins are found in non-granite areas such as on Graves Island, but this is unusual. These drumlins contain large granite boulders, are often well- or excessively well-drained, and have soils with characteristics similar to Gibraltar soils.[4][7]
Graves Island was first settled by farmers and you can still see some signs of them today.[4] Overlooking scenic Mahone Bay, the island has a lot of history. Ownership of the land and residents of the island have been primarily associated with two families over the years: the Graves and the Zincks who first settled in Lunenburg County from Germany in 1753. [5] Even today, remnants remain from the families that once called Graves Island home, including stone foundations, old lanes, hand-dug wells, apple trees, tiger lilies, and rose bushes.
The 4 trails at Graves Island are well suited for family groups as they are all quite short. They take hikers around the island to see the many other drumlins and islands in the water. [6] For an easy hike, stay along the coastline which is flat.

Changing the Culture in Nova Scotia
We are a group of health professionals working in the South Shore, South West, Annapolis Valley, Colchester East Hants, Cumberland, Pictou County, Guysborough Antigonish-Strait, Cape Breton and Capital Health Districts and the IWK Health Centre looking to change the culture of drinking in Nova Scotia so that there is more enjoyment and less hurt in our everyday lives. Heres a chance to start raising awareness. Were looking at ways to start discussions, get people talking and get people thinking about the way were drinking. What do you think about the way were drinking? Do you ever think we sometimes go a little too far? Do you think we realize it? Or do you think there are ways we can change it for the better?
