Salt Creek Greenway PT5
Bridge under construction over Salt Creek. This is right at the State Police weigh station at RT 83 & St. Charles Rd. During dialogue I wrongly comment that new path will intersect Great Western Trail. I should have Said Prairie Path. At this point we are only about two blocks north of the Illinois Prairie Path. The Chicago Great Western Railway was indeed at that same location but the official start of that path is several blocks to the Southwest.

River Bend Trail (WB) to Great Western Trail (Sycamore, IL) - Part 1S
The western segment of the Great Western Trail in Illinois follows 17 miles of an abandoned railway corridor through DeKalb and Kane counties, between LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve and the town of Sycamore. The Chicago Great Western Railway (later Chicago and North Western) was called the Corn Belt Route because it linked Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha and Kansas City. Today, the crushed limestone trail provides access for cyclists, walkers and joggers, and in winter allows cross-country skiing and snowmobiling (the latter west of Wasco and when snows reach 4 inches). Horseback riding is allowed on another trail adjacent to the Great Western Trail only. The trail also includes shelters and rest areas.
The open space created from the trail corridor offers thousands of acres of landscapes that are pleasing to the eye: wetlands, natural areas, farmland and rural communities. The trail passes through Virgil and Lily Lake, paralleling State Route 64. A newer section of the Great Western Trail is found in DuPage County to the east.
You can link the east and west segments of this trail—in a long, roundabout way—by continuing on the Randall Road Bike Path at this trail's eastern end in LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve. Take the Randall Road trail north to the River Bend Trail (a.k.a. Silver Glen Trail), which meets up with the Fox River Trail. Where the Fox River Trail meets the Illinois Prairie Path (east of the river in Elgin), take the Illinois Prairie Path east to the eastern segment of the Great Western Trail, where they intersect near Prince Crossing Road.

Cock Robin Restaurants of Melrose Park and Brookfield, Illinois
Now only existing as a nostalgic, tasty memory, the Cock Robin fast food eateries of the Chicago area once numbered 23 in all (one source indicates 25). The first of the Prince Castle restaurants (as they were originally called) opened its doors in 1929. By 1931, there were 5 of these fast food places in the Chicago area.
Founded in Naperville, Illinois by Walter Fredenhagen and Earl Prince, these ChiTown diners featured, among other things, a variety of soft ice cream flavors, signature one-in-a-million milk shakes, and their own, unique sandwich, the steak burger.
The various Prince Castles started slowly changing their names to Cock Robin starting in 1955. In time, all of them were called Cock Robins and had appropriate signs to announce the fact. It seems that nobody is still around who knows just why the name change occurred.
Seen in this youtube video are scenes from the Melrose Park, Illinois and Brookfield, Illinois Cock Robin restaurants. The former was filmed in April of 2004 while the latter was shot in July of that year.
Sadly, when I returned to the Melrose Park Cock Robin in July of 2004, I discovered that it had shut its doors for good, the land having been sold to the nearby hospital so that a parking lot could be made (did they sell paradise?) In 2007, the Brookfield Cock Robin closed its doors for good as well.
It is hoped that these short video segments will help the viewer revisit the iconic Cock Robin restaurant for just one more, memorable time. Let your imagination do the tasting and enjoy!

Deer colony in River Forest
Spring grazing with the deer colony in the Cook County forest preserves along the Des Plaines river in River Forest
Leonard Lee Rue III writes, in The Deer of North America, When you think of what deer represented -- first to the experience of the American Indians and then to the fist settlers -- you begin to wonder if mankind could have managed without them. Venison was a dietary staple, they used deer hides for clothing, the sinews were used to sew the skins, the bones were fashioned into awls to poke holes in the leather so the sewing could commence, the hair was used as insulation when stuffed into deer-leather moccasins, the hooves were turned into glue and ornaments, and finally the bones and antlers became tools, weapons, decorations, and religious objects.

salt creek kayak adventure
My boy and I went down salt creek. We started right next to the old Robertson cemetery and went all the way to the old browning bridge abutment, which is around 7 miles for the round trip. We ran into one impassible log jam which we had to pull the kayaks out and walk around.
