Over a Thai Salt Farm
I shot this with my drone over a salt farm in Samut Sakhon, Thailand. Samut Sakhon is the biggest producer of brine salt in Thailand, and the farms, which resemble shallow rice paddies, are located at different areas across the province. The farm itself resembles a giant grid of multi-coloured squares, with each square's colour dependent on it’s position in the harvesting process. The farm is located near the coast, with the salt sourced from the available seawater. The salt is harvested through a solar evaporation process, with a combination of wind and sunlight evaporating the water from shallow pools, leaving the salt behind. After harvesting, the salt is washed, drained, cleaned and refined. There are large drying sheds located every few hundred meters along the stretch of road at the edge of the farm. Once the salt is processed, it is bagged, loaded onto trucks and shipped to distributors or directly to markets.
The harvesting process is labor-intensive, with the farmers working throughout the day in the tropical heat. The sinewy worker with the white head of hair who is pushing the wheelbarrow in some pictures is 60 years old. He’s worked at salt farms since he was a teenager and well respected by his fellow labourers for his strength and effort at his work. He was shovelling piles of rice alongside a man half his age, but shovelled and hauled twice as many loads as his counterpart.

SALT - the movie, but not that one . .
A brief flight over salt farmers in Thailand as they harvest salt from one of the many ponds that dot the Samut Songkhram and Petchburi mangrove coastal areas. Just under 2 hours drive from Bangkok on the way to Huahin, this is one of Thailand's major salt producing areas. However, Thailand's overall salt production is quite small, and it is not yet in the top 20 of salt producing countries.
Insight Thainess Episode 2 The Riviera of the Salt Field
The Gulf of Thailand is an area full of marine resources and coastal resources, rich with shrimps, mussels, crabs, and fish. On the lowland coastal plain ranging from Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram and Phetchaburi province, there are local farmers who make salt from seawater. Ban Laem district has many white fields, which is a product of the seawater of the Gulf of Thailand. Seawater is released into the pond to wait for the change to become crystallised white salt and full of nutritional value. Thai people transform locally available ingredients into processed food; it is even used as a flavouring for Thai desserts. Bang Tabun residents bring salt to use when making some local products; such as, shrimp paste, fish sauce and other kinds of seafood products. The riviera road along the coastline of the Gulf of Thailand is always open for travellers to have new experiences.
Making Salt near Bangkok
Making salt from seawater is a major industry in Thailand, you don't have to travel far from Bangkok to view these salt farms. Most people discover the salt farms when they drive to Hua Hin one of the leading tourist places in Thailand , driving on highway 35 from Bangkok to Hua Hin as you pass through Samut Sakhorn you will be blinded by white salt in various phases of production. The seawater is pumped from the gulf of Thailand into shallow rectangular fields laid out by the farm owner, the brine is left to evaporate over a period of time, when the evaporation is ended , the salt is scraped up and put into small heaps before being collected by a team of workers who transport the salt by hand to the roadside for bagging and further transportation. Production ceases for a period during the rainy season whilst people maybe in holiday mood as they travel around , there is an educational value blended in as they drive through the the salt farm district.
