Back to the Banks
I have never really been fond of the beach. The sand got in your shorts and shoes. The salt air made everything sticky. When you swam in the ocean, the salt water burned your eyes and left a bad taste in your mouth. Growing up, I spent many a summer at the beach. Whether it was at a little known Minnesott Beach on the Neuse River at my grandparent's cottage, or camping on the tourist filled Myrtle Beach with my parents, I can almost say I grew up at the beach, or at least near the beach. As much fun as that might sound, I really didn't like the beach. Once I had kids of my own and we started going places, it got to the point that I almost loathed the beach. I avoided it almost at all cost. The times that I did go, I went out of my way to avoid the sand and salt water.
But as I have grown older, I have come to realize that I only loathed the beach because I didn't really understand it. I never took the time to get to know it for what it really was and the beauty that it truly holds. I never had the foresight to look beyond the things I disliked about it and immerse myself into the wondrous place it really is. Paddling in the basins, lagoons, sounds and coastal backwaters has reconnected me with the beach. It brought back a flood of memories from my childhood that I wouldn't trade for all the riches in the world. It has allowed me to see the beach and the ocean with new eyes and accept the fact that in everything you dislike, you can always find something to like and in everything you like there are things you dislike. (I still hate sand in my shorts and I swear sand fleas were put here by God to torture us) I have been to the coastal waters three times this year, and more times in the last year than I have in the previous 25. It is becoming one of my favorite places to visit.
On Valentine's weekend Ladybug and I found ourselves again traveling by ferry across the Pamlico Sound to that thin ribbon of sand dunes and tidal marsh on the Outer Banks. This time we were on a mission to Ocracoke to pick up a kayak I purchased for Ladybug from an outfitter on the island. It afforded us a chance to see the Ocracoke Lighthouse and visit a part of the Banks that we had not been to in a long time. We spent the remainder of our weekend in Kitty Hawk and Manteo before making a quick stop on the way home in Plymouth to scout out an upcoming trip in April. Even though the weather really didn't cooperate with us to the point that we were able to get in a little paddling, we still had a wonderful weekend making memories that I will tuck away along with all the rest I have that I wouldn't trade for anything.

The Truth About 3-Day Red Snapper Season (2017)
If you are a recreational fisherman in the Gulf of Mexico, the chances are good you heard about the recent announcement of the 3-day red snapper season in federal waters (anything outside of 9 miles from the state's shoreline).
As you can imagine, recreational anglers are pretty upset with the incredibly short 3-day red snapper season. When you consider that the chances of perfect (or even great) conditions during a 72-hour period are slim, this 3-day red snapper season is kind of a slap in the face to recreational anglers.
Unfortunately, there has been a lot of blaming and bad information out there regarding the federal gulf red snapper season, so we went over to Hubbard's Marina to interview Dylan Hubbard to get his take since he has been heavily involved on both sides of the fence (recreational fishing and for-hire fishing).
Make sure to listen in to the full interview as Dylan reveals who's really to blame for these short red snapper seasons along with what we can do about it to make change.
You might be shocked to find out that the infamous Red Snapper Sea Lords aren't really to blame...
