I like to know how they lived in this mine. What their economic condition was like. Where they slept and where they planted their food. I'd like to know how many they were and whether they had a family or lived alone.

21. SOUNDBITE (Farsi) Abolfazl Afshar, Cultural Deputy of Zanjan's Cultural Heritage Organisation
The experts say that they were buried here when the mines collapsed because of earthquake or something. The mine collapse blocked the exit passages and they got trapped here. Their bodies became salt-cured and remained undamaged for more than 2700 years. Right now their flesh and even the tissues of the food they had eaten and their belongings have remained unchanged.

25. SOUNDBITE (Farsi) Abolfazl Afshar, Cultural Deputy of Zanjan's Cultural Heritage Organisation:
Archaeologists have done archaeology activities in similar salt mines in countries such as Austria and retrieved information as to how the miners worked there and so on. However, a salt mine like Chehrabad where such intact bodies have remained is unique and there is no other mine like this in the world.

LEAD IN
When five people entered a salt tunnel near Chehrabad of Zanjan, 2700 years ago, they couldn't have imagined that centuries later their bodies would be regarded as a great archaeological discovery.
They all died in the mine and their bodies were preserved by the salt.
STORYLINE

Zanjan is the capital of Zanjan Province in Iran. It lies 298 km (185 mi) north-west of Tehran on the main highway to Tabriz and Turkey and approximately 125 km (78 mi) from the Caspian Sea. The city is located about 20 kilometers south of the Qaflankuh Mountain Range. At the 2016 census, its population was 521,302 which is the 20th largest city in Iran. The population of Zanjan consists mostly of Iranian Azeris who can also speak the Azerbaijani language.Zanjan is 21733 square kilometers.
Zanjan is known for its beautiful handcrafts such as knives, traditional sandals, called charoogh, and malileh, a handcraft made with silver wires. Zanjani artists make many things like various decorative dishes and their special covers as well as silver jewelry. In ancient times, Zanjan was known for its stainless and sharp knives. But this tradition is gradually becoming extinct by introduction of Chinese-made knives into the market which are far cheaper, more abundant and less artistic[citation needed]. Many villagers today are traditional carpet weavers, perhaps Zanjan's most popular handcraft.
