Saltaire - UNESCO World Heritage Site
A tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site in Saltaire, near the city of Bradford in the UK. Saltaire is a model village built for the workers of a nearby textile mill, and was intended to provide them with good clean housing, sanitation, recreational facilities, medical treatment and education for worker's children.
It's a beautiful little spot, and I was very happy to wander around enjoying the atmosphere. Some of the Industrial Revolution sites in the UK can be a bit hit and miss, so I'm glad this one was a hit!

Saltaire Victorian village - Bradford, Yorkshire, England. UNESCO World Heritage Site
Saltaire is a Victorian model village within the City of Bradford Metropolitan District, West Yorkshire, England, by the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. UNESCO has designated the village as a World Heritage Site, and it is a so-called Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
History
Saltaire was founded in 1853 by Sir Titus Salt, a leading industrialist in the Yorkshire woollen industry. The name of the village is a combination of the founder's surname with the name of the river. Salt moved his entire business (five separate mills) from Bradford to this site near Shipley partly to provide better arrangements for his workers than could be had in Bradford and partly to site his large textile mill by a canal and a railway. Salt employed the Bradford firm of Lockwood and Mawson as his architects.[1]
A similar project had been started a few years earlier by Edward Akroyd at Copley, also in West Yorkshire. The cotton milling village of New Lanark, which is also a World Heritage site, was founded by David Dale in 1786.
Salt built neat stone houses for his workers (much better than the slums of Bradford), wash-houses with running water, bath-houses, a hospital, as well as an Institute for recreation and education, with a library, a reading room, a concert hall, billiard room, science laboratory and gymnasium. The village also provided a school for the children of the workers, almshouses, allotments, a park and a boathouse.[2]
Sir Titus died in 1876 and was interred in the mausoleum adjacent to the Congregational Church. When Sir Titus Salt's son, likewise Sir Titus Salt, died, Saltaire was taken over by a partnership which included Sir James Roberts from Haworth who had worked at the mill since the age of twelve, and who would travel to Russia each year, speaking Russian fluently. James Roberts came to own Saltaire, but chose to invest his money heavily in Russia, losing some of his fortune at the Russian Revolution. He endowed a Chair of Russian at Leeds University and bought the Brontë's Haworth Parsonage for the nation. He is mentioned in T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land. Roberts is buried at Fairlight.

The village has survived remarkably complete, but further protection is needed as the village is blighted by traffic through the Aire Valley, an important east-west route. A bypass is proposed to relieve traffic pressure. Roberts Park, on the north side of the river, suffered from neglect and vandalism but has been restored by Bradford Council.
Saltaire is a conservation area. Victoria Hall (originally the Saltaire Institute) is used for meetings and concerts, and houses a Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ. The village is served by Saltaire railway station. The Saltaire Festival, which first took place in 2003 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the foundation of Saltaire, is held every year over eleven days in September. Saltaire Arts Trail is a visual arts festival that takes place each May, where residents open the doors of their homes to become temporary art galleries.
Politically, Saltaire is part of the Shipley electoral ward of the City of Bradford, and part of the parliamentary constituency of Shipley, currently represented by Philip Davies of the Conservatives. From 1999 to 2005, parliamentarians from three chambers, Chris Leslie MP in the House of Commons, Lord Wallace of Saltaire in the House of Lords and Richard Corbett MEP in the European Parliament, all lived in Saltaire.
Saltaire is surrounded by a buffer zone established to protect the context of the World Heritage Site. Concerns have been raised over plans announced by Bradford Council and Action Airedale to site a bypass through the buffer zone to either side of the World Heritage Site and to tunnel beneath the village. Within sight of the mill, the tunnel would follow the line of the railway and exit behind the United Reformed Church. As it would pass alongside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, it could impact on this Conservation Area. The route would impact on an ancient semi-natural woodland and the Woodland Garden of Remembrance at Nab Wood Cemetery.

Shipley Water Main Pipe Lining, Saltaire Village, West Yorkshire, 2007
In 2007 I was working for Laing O'Rourke until my redundancy in 2009. This is a film that I produced to show Yorkshire Water customers the process of lining a water main. I am no engineer, no film producer but it shows the process of lining a water main in great detail. I think its very clever process! Saltaire is a famous village that has received World Heritage Status, the sensitive nature of the area was observed whilst using this technique. I am still looking for a job, any ideas? I visited Saltaire as part of a Geocaching walk, and this video includes the general locations of three Geocaches in Saltaire, without giving away too much information as to their exact whereabouts.

On the 25th December 2015 it started to rain and didn't stop for over 24 hrs.
Officially 63.0 mm of rain was recorded in Bingley.
This was on the back of countless bands of rain that had already
saturated the ground and as a result, this happened…

Bewildered Family Guide to Yorkshire - Saltaire
We are proud to present the first Bewildered Family Guide to Yorkshire video. In this clip we explore the beautiful village of Saltaire and take in the sites and sounds of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a look.
Saltaire is a beautiful village on the outskirts of Bradford. Although it originally housed the workers from Titus Salt’s mill on the River Aire, heavy industry is a thing of the past and today it’s all about tourism, arts and community.
There is an array of independent shops to browse and a range of tempting cafes, restaurants and pubs to visit. You will also find a packed calendar of events to enjoy throughout the year. In addition, it is worth popping by just to take in the beautiful architecture of the terraced homes and other buildings such as the Victoria Hall.
You might also enjoy sniggering at the sign bearing the name Fanny Street, but that could just be me.
Titus Salt built Salts Mill in 1852 and, although he was a master businessman, his grammar left something to be desired. There’s no apostrophe in Salts Mill, even though it is the mill of Titus Salt. Still, you probably shouldn’t let that get in the way of enjoying a family day in Saltaire.
The mill no longer churns out textiles to send around the world. Instead, it is an art gallery, dining destination and shopping experience. There is a fine bookshop featuring a large selection of kids’ titles. You will also find a home shop with beautifully designed items that I could browse forever. I rarely buy from there as it’s a bit pricey and I’m tight, but I like looking.
Salts Mill is home to a host of work by the world famous artist David Hockney. The venue holds the world’s largest permanent collection of works by the Bradford-born painter and is well worth a look.
Saltaire Festival is one of the biggest family-friendly events of the year in the village. It takes place over two weekends in the middle of September and the week in-between. You will find kids’ activities, art displays, open gardens and more in the lead up to the final weekend, when the village is taken over by food festivals, live music, stalls, a vintage fair and all manner of fun events.
It’s extremely friendly and a great excuse to explore this family friendly village on the outskirts of Bradford.
You can also take in the Living Advent Calendar in the run-up to Christmas. Every day during advent, a new festive scene appears in a Saltaire resident’s window, building up towards the big day.
The Living Advent Calendar is run by arts group Saltaire Inspired, who also put on events and workshops throughout the year. The Saltaire Arts Trail in May is particularly worth visiting with the family.
