The Canteen opened in Provincetown, Mass., in 2013 in a 200-year-old building on Commercial Street. Order from the counter up front, then head around the back to enjoy your food outside in the garden area.
The lobster roll at The Canteen can be ordered hot with drawn butter or cold in a light mayo dressing, depending on your preference.
Oysters are shucked daily, and come with cocktail sauce or mignonette. If you prefer them cooked, order the fried oysters.
The crispy Brussels sprouts with chili and fish sauce are a popular side at The Canteen, offering a taste of Southeast Asia in Provincetown.
Another Southeast Asian menu item is the banh mi. It can come with ginger and soy marinated cod, or poached shrimp.
Happy Camper is the sister establishment to The Canteen, serving sweets, ice cream and Stumptown coffee.
There are so many dessert items to choose from at Happy Camper, from pie to ice pops to homemade doughnuts.
The ice cream at Happy Camper is a good reason to stop by. There is soft serve, hard ice cream, fro yo and even ice cream sandwiches made with homemade cookies.
Chequessett Chocolate is a bean-to-bar producer and coffee shop in North Truro, Mass. Co-founders Katherine Reed and Josiah Mayo work directly with cacao producers to source beans that they turn into a variety of chocolate products in-house.
It’s not all chocolate at Chequessett. Stop by in the morning for a pastry and a coffee from George Howell, a Massachusetts roaster.
Chequessett offers custom bon-bon samplers.
Parked just outside Chequessett is the High Tide Kitchen food truck, which serves Southeast Asian food from chef Emerson Breneman like banh mi, pad Thai and homemade kimchi.
Joey Rugo opened his first food truck in 2014, and after some shifting around, has two locations at Truro, Mass., beaches – one at Head of the Meadow and one at Corn Hill. You can also find a Joey's Food Truck at the Truro Farmers' Market on Monday mornings.
The food is Mexican-inspired and perfect for a picnic at the beach. Choose from a selection of tacos, quesadillas and burritos with fillings like jerk chicken, braised pork, sautéed cod, or roasted veggies and spiced tofu.
Try the Mexican street corn side dish, with ancho chili butter, feta cheese and chipotle aioli.
Montano’s has been around for a quarter of a century. It’s one of the few restaurants in the area to remain open all year, serving freshly made pasta, seafood and Italian classics.
What exactly is New Haven-style pizza? It’s basically Neapolitan pizza that is served “well done,” as the menu warns.
Owner Bob Montano has committed to making fresh pasta every day, and cooking it to order instead of freezing it.
This is Cape Cod, so of course there’s a pasta dish with lobster. The pappardelle special comes with roasted corn and lobster meat.
On Route 6 in Wellfleet, Mass., PJ’s Family Restaurant serves up fried seafood, lobster rolls and some of the best soft serve ice cream in the area. Order inside, or from the outdoor counter along the parking lot.
Lobster comes in many shapes and sizes at PJ’s, from a classic lobster roll to a lobster meat-topped salad made with Tuscan kale or mixed greens.
The Strawberry Fields salad, topped with fresh berries and poppy seed dressing, is a nice pairing with fried food like fish tacos and onion rings.
The ice cream at PJ’s is a reason to visit alone. Order an ice cream sandwich, or a soft serve twist dipped in butterscotch topping.
Lobster Pot is a Provincetown, Mass., institution, instantly recognizable from the outside because of its neon sign. The restaurant is always busy (and doesn’t take reservations, so be prepared for a wait), serving up classic New England seafood in a dining room overlooking Provincetown Harbor.
You’ll find lobster prepared in a multitude of ways here. The baked stuffed lobster is packed with a mixture of Ritz crackers, onion and celery mixed with shrimp, scallops and crab.
The pan-roasted lobster is a 1-¼ pounder that is flambéed in brandy before being roasted in the oven. It comes with a butter sauce for dipping.
The Portuguese influence in Provincetown, Mass., is strong and dates back many years. This Portuguese fish dish is cod crusted with linguica (Portuguese sausage) and stuffed with the same blend that is used in the baked stuffed lobster.
The lobster avocado cocktail is a specialty appetizer that combines lobster meat, avocado, mango, tarragon mayo and sweet pepper.
The Squealing Pig is a casual bar and eatery in Provincetown, Mass., that serves up very good seafood, pub fare and breakfast. If you stop in, definitely try the smoky seafood chowder, one of the best bowls of chowder on the Outer Cape.
Fish and chips is a classic done right at The Squealing Pig. A light batter coats the haddock, which is served with homemade tartar sauce.
For breakfast, indulge in a full Irish farmhouse platter of eggs, bangers, black and white pudding, and roasted tomatoes.

The World's Most Dangerous Profession Is Fishing: The Lobster Chronicles (2002)
Linda Greenlaw (born December 22, 1960) is a best-selling author of books with maritime themes and the only female swordfishing boat captain on the East Coast of the United States. About the book:
She was featured in the 1997 book The Perfect Storm and the 2000 film adaptation. Linda Greenlaw now captains the boat Hannah Boden on the Discovery Channel show Swords: Life on the Line. She previously captained Seahawk after the previous captain died on board.
Greenlaw wrote three best-selling books about life as a commercial fisher: The Hungry Ocean in 1999, The Lobster Chronicles in 2002 and All Fishermen Are Liars in 2002.
Her books have climbed as high as No. 2 on the New York Times bestseller list, with The Hungry Ocean remaining on the list for three months.
Greenlaw lives on Isle au Haut, Maine, and was the first female sword-fishing boat captain on the American East Coast.
Greenlaw was born in Connecticut, the daughter of Jim and Martha Greenlaw. Her father was an information systems manager for Bath Iron Works. She was raised in Topsham, Maine, and her family spent their summers in Isle au Haut, a village of 70 people off the coast of Maine. Greenlaw attended Colby College, where she majored in both English and government. To help pay her way through college, Linda worked as a cook and deckhand aboard the sword-fishing boat Walter Leeman during her summers. She continued working on the boat during free time and vacations and, after her graduation in 1983, continued working for the boat's owner, Alden Leeman, who installed Greenlaw as a swordfish captain in 1986 when he acquired a second vessel.[7]
Greenlaw wrote in The Hungry Ocean: Being a woman hasn't been a big deal. I never anticipated problems stemming from being female, and never encountered any. I have been surprised, even embarrassed, by the number of people who are genuinely amazed that a woman might be capable of running a fishing boat.
Greenlaw was the captain of the Hannah Boden in October 1991 when Andrea Gail sank in the Atlantic in the 1991 Perfect Storm. Greenlaw's efforts to warn the Andrea Gail about the impending storm were portrayed in Sebastian Junger's 1997 book The Perfect Storm and in the movie version, in which she was played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Junger called Greenlaw not just the only female swordfishing captain, but one of the best captains, period, on the entire East Coast.[5]
In 1997, Greenlaw settled in Isle au Haut, and bought a lobster boat, the 35-foot Mattie Belle.[2]
On May 28, 2009, Greenlaw was convicted of illegally entering and illegally fishing in Canadian waters by the Newfoundland Provincial Court. The Crown asked for a fine of CAD$53,000, while the defense recommended a fine of half that amount. She was fined $38,000 after the judge found she did not use due diligence.
Greenlaw's first book, The Hungry Ocean (1999), described a one-month swordfishing voyage, entailing, among other things, treacherous weather, uncooperative fish, wildly entertaining shipmates, and the exhausting, mind-bending pressure of ten consecutive 21-hour days.[5] Subsequent books include The Lobster Chronicles: Life on a Very Small Island (2002), All Fishermen Are Liars: True Tales from the Dry Dock Bar (2004), Seaworthy: A Swordboat Captain Returns to the Sea (2010), and Lifesaving Lessons: Notes from an Accidental Mother (2013). Greenlaw has co-authored two cookbooks with her mother, Martha Greenlaw, and published two novels of detective fiction—Slipknot (2007) and Fisherman's Bend (2008)—featuring her fictional detective Jane Bunker.
