Chua Hang Cave Pagoda Buddhist Temple located on Sam Mountain, Chau Doc, Mekong Delta, Vietnam
One of the most pleasant surprises on the third day of our Mekong Delta tour was climbing up the 400 + steps to reach the Buddhist temple known as Chua Hang or Cave Pagoda located on Sam Mountain in Chau Doc, Vietnam. Given that we had either been planted in a van and/or boat for the past couple of days, it was a welcome relief having the opportunity to get some rigorous exercise even given the extreme heat and humidity.

At this particular point of the tour, we were starting to get frustrated that we were spending so much time in a cramped situation when we thought our tour would have included more walking and opportunities for exploration. Although, having the opportunity to climb up to this cave slightly redeemed our opinion of the tour, it still was a bit too little too late.
The ascent up the stairs was exhausting given the sweltering heat and humidity but the views were well worth it as small fishing communities and seemingly endless rice fields extended off far into the distance.
For several minutes, I just gazed out at the surroundings down below me realizing how high we had climbed to reach this point.
The Buddhist temple was certainly more quirky than usual. In particular, a reclining Buddha was sporting sunglasses. Without fail, I pulled out my camcorder and dSLR camera to capture this peculiar attraction. I honestly live to capture these oddball travel moments; it's what has kept me on the road as a digital nomad for years on end.
I've seen just about anything in and around temple areas, including smoking monks and other 'interesting' behaviour, but this was indeed the first time to see Buddha donning shades. Who knew Buddha could look so cool? ;)
For those interested in visiting the temple it's worth noting that it is free of charge; and who doesn't like something that is free? ;)

Ba Chuc and Sam Mountain Deep into the Mekong Delta of Vietnam
Terry Hodgkinson aka wandering ninja wanders deep into the Mekong Delta area of Vietnam. His friends and him visit Ba Chuc and Sam Mountain. Ba Chuc was the place where a massacre was carried out by the the Khmer Rouge from Cambodia, on April 18, 1978. 3,157 civilians were killed, only two survived the massacre. The attack was one of the events that prompted the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia.
Next Terry would visit Sam Mountain which is famous for its pagodas set in caves which were built with influences of Chinese, Cham and Khmer cultures. The peak of Sam Mountain for spectacular views over Chau Doc (Vietnam) and Cambodia.
Ba Chuc was not an easy place to visit and learn of the atrocities that occurred there. It's hard to belive that things like this can happen to such innocent people. Ba Chuc did help prepare me for what I would see when I went to Cambodia and saw the Choeung Ek Memorial also known as The Killing Fields.
I really enjoyed the view from the top of Sam Mountain. I sat there for a long time and found myself contemplating life, especially after walking around Ba Chuc. Really beautiful views from up there over both Vietnam and Cambodia. -- Terry
Châu Đốc, Floating Village and Chau Pho Hotel - Vietnam 4K Travel Channel
Chau Doc in the Mekong Delta is an important border town to Cambodia. A daily speedboat connection on the Mekong to Phnom Penh is an important part infrastructure and conducive to trade.
Its diverse population is also typical of the town. Cambodians, Cham, Chinese and Vietnamese live peaceful here and bring different cultural aspects in the daily life. The various religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, cross and crescent also lead a peaceful coexistence here.
Chau Doc is known for its sacred mountain Nui Sam, that lies about 5 km to the west of the city. During a three-day pilgrimage festival, the mountain becomes an annual attraction for more than two million pilgrims. In the past, the 320 m high mountain was an island in the sea. But unfortunately, we have no time to visit the pilgrimage place.
We change over from the car into a boat and go out to the river Hau, a tributary of the Mekong. Our next destination is a floating village. Soon, the nice houses appear on the other river side and we steer to one of these. We enter the house through a porch. The owner welcomes us.
She opens a flap in the ground and throws fish food from the bag standing next to it into the water under the house. Immediately a chaotic hustle and bustle start when the fish jump after the food.
All the houses have nets underneath to breed fish, most of it Pangasius and Tilapia. Vietnam exports 600.000 tons every year. The largest part is artificially bred here under the houses. It now contributes more to the yield than the naturally captured fish.
This is not uncontroversial. Since the fish are bred in the smallest space, one adds plenty of antibiotics to the food, which in turn reaches the Mekong and the natural food chain. In addition, the South China Sea will be fished empty, as these fish serve as food for the artificially bred fish. It is not the only swimming village in Vietnam. On the Mekong there are countless.
We drive a little further and enter a village of the Cham via an adventurous wooden bridge. Many of the Cham people settled here, after being driven from the area around My Son and Hue. Their houses stand on high stilts, where you can see the high-water marks.

From its source in the Tibetan Plateau, the Mekong River travels over four thousand kilometers through six countries, eventually flowing through the vast Mekong Delta of Vietnam and into the sea. More than sixty million people rely on the river for their culture, livelihoods and food security.
This 22 minute film follows the efforts of students and scientists from the Mekong Delta's Can Tho University as they develop a resilience strategy for the challenges facing the delta over the next hundred years.

Vinh Lung & Chau Doc - Mekong Delta, Vietnam
Vinh Lung & Chau Doc - Mekong Delta, Vietnam
Chau Doc is located deep into the Mekong Delta, at the fork where the Mekong River divides into two branches running through Vietnam from Cambodia. Chau Doc is considered as the gate way to Mekong Delta with the two international border crossings through Cambodia on land and water.. The Bassac River flows through the town and is a border crossing for river borne traffic. There's a large market selling local products and commodities. A short boat trip across the Bassac takes you to several floating fish farms and villages. Modified house-boats, a trap-door in the floor provides access to nets under the boat where the fish are grown. The local Sam Mountain is a tourism destination in its own right. Everest it isn't, although the pancake-flat plains of the Mekong make it look higher than it is. It's a 'holy' mountain, full of caves, shrines and temples.
In a region that water is much more than land; people don't use cars or motorcycles much. Instead, they use boats. Interestingly, they also do daily trading on boats. How would you know which boat carries what commodities?

Mekong Delta Travel Video: Things to do along the Mekong, Vietnam Top Attractions
Recently I completed a three day tour along the Mekong Delta in southern most region of Vietnam. The tour itself was somewhat of an exercise in futility, as I've honestly never seen such inefficiency in an itinerary in my entire travels. We literally were spending hours on end traveling by bus, waiting for passengers and backtracking for various reasons. I could write an entire essay on this subject; however, my lovely girlfriend Audrey recently wrote a fantastic summary of our Mekong delta misadventures on her blog. Although the tour itself was less than stellar, we did capture some great footage and certain fragments of the journey (when added up as a whole rather than considered as distinct parts) wasn't as bad as the tour overall. The following is a list of activities to consider doing when doing a tour of the Mekong Delta which we recommend wholeheartedly you consider doing independently:

1) Paddle Down The Mekong Delta
Whether you jump in a rowboat all by yourself or have a local Vietnamese wearing a conical hat act as skipper, paddling down the Mekong Delta was one of our favorite experiences on our three day tour.
2) Visiting A Floating Market
The hectic parade of activity that's also know as the local floating markets is a fascinating spectacle to behold. From pineapple tossing to fishing the market is as lively as they come. What's fascinating is that all of this takes place on the water where you have an opportunity to experience all of it for a couple of hours.
3) Mingle With Friendly Locals At A Cham Island Settlment
The opportunity to visit with local minority Cham villages was probably my favorite experience. As a visible minority group (Islamic in their beliefs) the Cham villagers are radiant warm people who will smile and pose for photos while waving at you. Their distinct clothing and headdress is quite impressive.
4) Feed Catfish at a Fish Farm
Throwing pellets of fish food into a tiny open space of water and watching a plethora of catfish fight over the scraps wasn't one of the highlights of my journey but it's likely a stop along the way if you're on a tour. If going it alone we'd recommend skipping this.
5) Listening to a traditional Vietnamese music and singing performance is something we relished after spending hours out on the boat. The soothing and distinct sound of the music along with fruit refreshments and tea helped us to cool down and recharge for the rest of the afternoon.
6) Climb Cave Pagoda
Finally, for those who make it all the way to Chau Doc (nearby the Vietnamese - Cambodian border) make sure to climb all the way up to Cave Pagoda for some breathtaking views of rice fields, stilt villages and greenery. With a Buddha decked out in sunglasses it's just the kind of quirky place we recommend highly.

1) Paddle xuống Đồng bằng sông Cửu Long
2) Tham quan chợ nổi

Here, in Chau Doc – the last city visited in Mekong Delta, I went up on the Sam Mountain (230 m high) only to have a view over the Delta. I thought at the beginning that this will be it… but the road to its summit was, by me, more spectacular than the view – which was outrageous!! Have a look!

Nha Trang, Chau Duc & the Mekong Delta River of Vietnam
Terry Hodgkinson aka wandering ninja continues to wander south in Vietnam. Passing over another mountain pass where the scenery was stunning once again. Continuing to ride onward south Terry and friends stop at a war memorial along the way. Then Riding down to Chau Duc, where they took a boat ride out on the Mekong Delta where they visited a floating fish farm.
I just love the scenery when riding motorcycle in Vietnam. You will see in this video clip at the mountain pass, how the road winds around the side of the mountain with the ocean right there. All I can say is what a fantastic experience riding in beauty like that! The war memorial made a lot of sense, how every Vietnamese citizen during the war became a soldier. It shows how strong and loyal the Vietnamese people are. Walking out on the monkey bridge was not as easy as I thought, there really isn't much space for a big guy like me. The fish farm we visited was fascinating. I've never seen that many hungry fish underneath a house before -- Terry

VIETNAM - Ho Chi Mihn City and Mekong delta
After three days in Ho Chi Mihn City, I visited Can Tho, the largest city of the Mekong delta. It was my intention to stay there only three nights and use it as base for my visit, by boat, for the nearby floating markets, Cai Rang and Phong Dien and the excursion along the many canals leading in the countryside.
At the end, I spent there nearly five days and when I left, I had the impression that I missed to capture the essence of the Mekong delta, the Vietnam's big rice basket.
Maybe one month earlier I could had found a different landscape with green or yellow rice paddies and met more farmers at work.
Before leaving Vietnam, I joined an organized tour to visit Ben Tre and My Tho.
