Sam Sand Dunes | Jaisalmer | Desert Jeep Safari

Sam sand dunes, is one of the most authentic desert dune site in Jaisalmer, with 30-60 meter tall sand dunes, and travelers mainly visit for enjoying Desert Safari on camels or jeep, Sam is 45 km west from Jaisalmer city, where you can reach by road and stay in one of many desert camps, built in 2-3 km radius of sand dunes.

The best time to reach Sam sand dunes is around evening (sunset) at around 4-7 PM or early morning, during sunrise time of 4 to 6 am. You can book a camel or jeep (which is available at desert camps) to reach.the sunset point, that is 20-30 minutes from the campsite.

The best time to visit Sam or even Jaisalmer is from October to March (Feb) as in the renaming months, all the camps are closed and only few camel riders will be available.

We booked our package with Jaisal Raj Resort and the experience with this place was satisfactory

If you happen to visit the Sam sand dunes in Jaisalmer, you will come across a number of local artists who will come to you and request you to watch them perform just for Rs 10 or 20. This little Gypsy girl moves around with his father and performs before the tourists. She has never been to a school neither for dance nor for formal education.

In most of the dhanis (small villages), getting good drinking water is quite a challenge. The ground water has high salinity and people have no other option but to drink it. The rainfall is very small, around 8 per year. Rainwater collection systems have been there but not enough to satisfy the drinking water demand. Raising cattle is one of the major source of livelihood and people are more concerned about providing drinking water to their cattle. This dhani called Chimsingh ki dhani, gets its water supply from this tank which is filled by bringing water from distance and has high salinity.

Amenities include an open-air restaurant on the desert and a campfire area with nightly entertainment.
