HIKING THE SAMARIA GORGE IN CRETE GREECE - INFORMATION, TIPS, AND REVIEW
THE SAMARIA GORGE is the best hike I have done in Europe. It is also the longest hike in Europe at 16 kilometers. The hike is rated as difficult so make sure you are prepared for a 5 to 7 hour hike on difficult terrain. This is our video of hiking the Samaria Gorge.

The Samariá Gorge (Greek: Φαράγγι Σαμαριάς or just Φάραγγας) is a National Park in Greece since 1962 on the island of Crete – a major tourist attraction of the island – and a World's Biosphere Reserve.
The gorge is in southwest Crete in the regional unit of Chania or Hania. It was created by a small river running between the White Mountains (Lefká Óri) and Mt. Volakias. There are a number of other gorges in the White Mountains. While some say that the gorge is 18 km long, this distance refers to the distance between the settlement of Omalos on the northern side of the plateau and the village of Agia Roumeli. In fact, the gorge is 16 km long, starting at an altitude of 1,250 m at the northern entrance, and ending at the shores of the Libyan Sea in Agia Roumeli. The walk through Samaria National Park is 13 km long, but one has to walk another three kilometers to Agia Roumeli from the park exit, making the hike 16 km long. The most famous part of the gorge is the stretch known as the Gates (or, albeit incorrectly, as Iron Gates), where the sides of the gorge close in to a width of only four meters and soar up to a height of almost 300 meters (980 feet). The gorge became a national park in 1962, particularly as a refuge for the rare kri-kri (Cretan goat), which is largely restricted to the park and an island just off the shore of Agia Marina. There are several other endemic species in the gorge and surrounding area, as well as many other species of flowers and birds.
The village of Samariá lies just inside the gorge. It was finally abandoned by the last remaining inhabitants in 1962 to make way for the park. The village and the gorge take their names from the village's ancient church, Óssia María.
A must for visitors to Crete is to complete the walk down the gorge from the Omalos plateau to Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea, at which point tourists sail to the nearby village of Sougia or Hora Sfakion, where they could spend a night there, or they could catch a bus back to Chania/Hania. The walk takes five to seven hours and can be strenuous, especially at the peak of summer.
Local tourist operators provide organized tours to the Gorge. These include bus transportation from one's hotel to the entrance (near Omalos village), and a bus connection that will be waiting for hikers after they disembark the ferry in Sougia or Sfakia (Chora Sfakion). If you are on your own, you can make a one-day round trip from Chania (see below) or from Sougia or Paleochora. Note that the morning buses from Sougia and Paleochora do not operate on Sunday. The ferries leave Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakion (eastbound) and to Sougia/Paleochora (westbound) at 17:30.

Samaria Gorge: The longest gorge in Europe
Samaria Gorge (National park of Samaria) is the longest gorge in Europe with a length of about 16 kilometres. It is located in west Crete (Chania) in the White Mountains. The gorge starts at Xyloskalo (about 1250 m above sea level) and runs down to the seaside village of Agia Roumeli on the south coast of Crete, on the Libyan Sea. The most famous part of the gorge is the Gates, where the sides of the gorge close in to a width of only four meters and soar up to a height of almost 300 meters.
The Samaria Gorge is considerably rich in plant and animal life with unique species protected under international law. Camping and overnight stay are prohibited. The most famous inhabitant of Samaria gorge is the Cretan wild goats (“kri-kri”). The gorge became a national park in 1962, particularly as a refuge of this wild goat.
Visits to the National park are allowed from May to October. The park visiting hours are 07:00 to 15:00 daily. There are daily guided tours from the whole Crete. The buses leave early in the morning (starting at 5:30). At the end of the gorge, Agia Roumeli, you can enjoy food and, of course, the beach. Boats, leaving early in the afternoon and transfer visitors from Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakion or Sougia, from where buses return visitors back. The cost is about 28-30 €. The entrance fees to the National Park of Samaria are additional €5.
If you walk relatively fast and make 3 stops for 15 minutes each time, it will take you about 6 hours to walk down the Samaria gorge. There are drinking water springs and toilets at various points. You will need a good pair of sneakers or hiking shoes, a bottle of water which you can refill with drinking water, a hat, a sun care cream and a salted snack. Of course, you should not have serious medical problems. You should also be prepared for pain in legs the next 4-5 days...
Το Φαράγγι της Σαμαριάς (Εθνικός Δρυμός Σαμαριάς) αποτελεί το μεγαλύτερο φαράγγι της Ευρώπης με μήκος περί τα 16 χιλιόμετρα. Ξεκινά από το Ξυλόσκαλο σε υψόμετρο περίπου 1250 μέτρων και καταλήγει στην Αγία Ρουμέλη, στο Λιβυκό Πέλαγος. Το εντυπωσιακότερο κομμάτι του φαραγγιού είναι η περιοχή «Πόρτες», το στενότερο του σημείο που περιβάλλεται από βράψια ύψους 300 μέτρων.
Το φαράγγι της Σαμαριάς είναι αξιοσημείωτα πλούσιο σε χλωρίδα και πανίδα. Το κάμπινγκ και η διανυκτέρευση δεν επιτρέπονται. Το γνωστότερο είδος είναι το κρητικό αγριοκάτσικο που ονομάζεται «κρι-κρι». Το φαράγγι της Σαμαριάς έγινε Εθνικός Δρυμός το 1962.
Το φαράγγι της Σαμαριάς είναι ανοιχτό στους επισκέπτες από τον Μάιο έως τον Οκτώβριο, από τις 7:00 έως 15:00. Κάθε μέρα διοργανώνονται ημερήσιες εκδρομές από πολλές περιοχές της Κρήτης στο φαράγγι της Σαμαριάς. Τα λεωφορεία ξεκινούν από νωρίς το πρωί (5:30). Στο τέλος του φαραγγιού, στην Αγία Ρουμέλη ο επισκέπτης μπορεί να κάνει το μπάνιο του στην παραλία και να φάει. Τα πλοία μεταφέρουν τους τουρίστες νωρίς το απόγευμα από την Αγία Ρουμέλη στην Χώρα Σφακίων ή στην Σούγια. Από εκεί, τα λεωφορεία επιστρέφουν τους τουρίστες στα καταλύματα τους. Το κόστος είναι 28-30 €. Δεν περιλαμβάνεται το εισιτήριο (5 €) για την είσοδο στο φαράγγι.
Με ένα σχετικά γρήγορο βηματισμό και με 3 στάσεις των 15 λεπτών, θα χρειαστείτε περίπου 6 ώρες. Κατά της διάρκεια της διαδρομής υπάρχουν τουαλέτες και συνεχώς πηγές πόσιμου νερού. Τι χρειάζεστε; Ένα ζευγάρι αθλητικά παπούτσια, ένα μπουκάλι νερού το οποίο θα ξαναγεμίζετε σε διάφορα σημεία, καπέλο, αντιηλιακό και ένα αλατισμένο σνακ. Δεν θα πρέπει να αντιμετωπίζετε σοβαρά προβλήματα υγείας. Βεβαίως, προετοιμαστείτε για πόνους στα πόδια σας τις επόμενες 4-5 ημέρες...
Seitan Limania Beach - (Satan's Harbours) - Stefanou Beach, Akrotiri Peninsula, Chania Crete
One of Crete's amazing beaches and hidden gems - a true secret beach (named Stefanou Beach) located not too far from the hustle and bustle of Chania in an area called Seitan Limania (Satan's Harbours) - undoubtedly named for the treacherous mountain road and rock paths you must navigate to arrive at this gem of a beach. Come prepared when visiting Stefanou Beach, after parking your vehicle, it's a pretty rocky path going down to the beach itself. Expect about a 10-15 minute walk and flip flops most likely won't cut it. Well worth the trip though - the water is excellent and there's a couple of places to rock jump or dive. Sand can be tough to come by on those busy summer afternoons, as the beach fills up quick with limited overflow area! Enjoy.
