Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany
Bamberg is an outstanding historical city, its old town is a UNESCO recognised protected zone and it has a great deal to offer the visitor. Like Rome, with which you will see and feel the similarities on visiting, it is built on seven hills - Cathedral Hill, Michaelsberg, Kaulberg/Obere Pfarre, Stefansberg, Jakobsberg, Altenburg and Abtsberg. Once run by Prince Bishops, each hill is crowned with a church.
It seems as though the river is an important part of the life blood of the city. The Regnitz is not a long river but it splits into two thus appearing to be everywhere and it flows into the Main near Bamberg. The Rhine – Main – Danube canal also passes near the city. I left my motorhome at a camp site to the south of the city and cycled in following the river and also using my bicycle to explore the area between the branches of the river and the canal. I was fortunate to visit in June which I suspect could be the best time of the year to visit!
Bamberg was first mentioned in 902CE and its name comes from the Babenberg family. The Holy Roman Emperor Henry II ordered the building of a cathedral, which was consecrated 6 May 1012. The church was enriched with gifts from the pope, and Henry had it dedicated in honor of him. In 1017 Henry also founded Michaelsberg Abbey on the Michaelsberg (another Mount St. Michael like those in Normandy and Cornwall), for the training of the clergy. When Pope While he was here he placed the diocese in direct dependence on the Holy See and personally consecrated some of Bamberg's churches. It would be fair to say that at this time, Bamberg was the centre of the Holy Roman Empire. Both Emperor Henry and his wife Kunigunde were buried in the cathedral.
From the middle of the 13th century onward the bishops ruled the Holy Roman Empire. This benefited Bamberg and left us with some of the magnificent buildings we see today, particularly around the area of the Cathedral.
We also see in Bamberg some of the excesses of the Church. The city is noted for the witch trials of the 17th century which claimed about one thousand victims in Bamberg, reaching a climax between 1626 and 1631, under the rule of Prince-Bishop Johann Georg II Fuchs von Dornheim.
In 1803 the Holy Roman Empire was wound up by Napoleon and Bamberg became part of Bavaria. It had a population then in excess of 200,000.
Bamberg was first connected to the German rail system in 1844, which has been an important part of its infrastructure ever since.
After a communist uprising took control over Bavaria in the years following World War I, the state government fled to Bamberg from Munich The first republican constitution of Bavaria was passed in Bamberg.
In February 1926 Bamberg served as the venue for the Bamberg Conference, convened by Adolf Hitler in his attempt to foster unity and to stifle dissent within the Nazi party. Bamberg was chosen for its location in Upper Franconia, reasonably close to the residences of the members of the dissident northern Nazi faction but still within Bavaria.
Bamberg escaped significant damage during WW2 but it could have been here where German resistance leader Claus von Stauffenberg had the idea to use the Valykire Plan as a means of overthrowing the Nazis. In the film Valkyrie, we see Stauffenberg at home in with his wife taking shelter as bombers pass over head whilst the children play at being Valkyries and Wagner’s music is playing on the record player. Stauffenberg’s home was at Schützenstraße 20 in Bamberg and his widow lived there after the war.
There are also underground tunnels beneath the town. These were originally constructed as mines which supplied sandstone which could be used for construction or as an abrasive cleaner. Mining came to an end in 1920 but a 12km tunnel network remained. The tunnels were used as an air raid shelter during World War II. A part of the network can be visited on a guided tour
The most curious building in Bamberg must be the Obere Brücke which was completed in 1455. Halfway across this, on an island, is the Rathaus or town hall which in its current state largely dates to 1756. The lyceum, formerly a Jesuit college, contains a natural history museum. The old palace (Alte Hofhaltung) was built in 1591 on the site of an old residence of the counts of Babenberg. Monuments include the Maximilian fountain (1880), with statues of King Maximilian I of Bavaria, the emperor Henry II and his wife, Conrad III and Saint Otto, bishop of Bamberg.[2]
Bamberg is known for its beer and is home to nine breweries. And I should mention its lively atmosphere!

The Historical Museum of Bamberg is a museum in Bamberg, Germany, located in the Alte Hofhaltung next to the city's cathedral. Together with the Villa Dessauer and the Collection Ludwig, a collection of porcelain and faience, it belongs to the museums of the city.
In 1838 Vicar Joseph Hemmerlein passed his large art collection on to the City of Bamberg. This is regarded as the birth of the museum. In the following century the museum continuously added new objects to the collection. The museum was located in the Michaelsberg Abbey until 1935. In 1938 it was moved in the Alte Hofhaltung, near the cathedral of Bamberg.
The Historical Museum Bamberg owns a fund of historical objects, which range from the prehistory to the current century. Beside a large art collection and stone sculptures, there are several handicraft objects, clocks from the 16th–19th centuries and a wide range of coins from numerous different ages. Furthermore, the Historical Museum Bamberg has a collection of astronomical and mathematical tools, as well as a compilation of nativity scenes exhibited during the Christmas season.

The four-winged complex of the New Residence was built in two stages. Firstly, the backwards two-winged section, which flanks the Obere Karolinenstrasse, was built from 1602 on in the Renaissance style under Prince Bishop von Gebsattel. Then, under Prince Bishop Lothar von Schönborn, the Baroque wings facing the Cathedral were built between 1697 and 1703 as a residence for the Prince Bishop by Leonhard Dientzenhofer.
The magnificent building complex has over 40 state rooms featuring stucco-work ceilings, furniture and tapestries from the 17th and 18th centuries. Painted on the walls of the Imperial Hall are 16 larger than life-sized portraits of emperors, the work of Melchior Steidl.
The Elector's Rooms, the Prince-Bishop's Apartments and the gallery with Old German and Baroque paintings (Branch of the Bavarian State Galleries) are of particular interest and there is a fine view from the Rose Garden in the Residence courtyard. Prince Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn had this regularly symmetrical garden laid out by Balthasar Neumann. It is bordered with clipped lime trees and a dainty garden pavilion (completed in 1757) and with around 4,500 roses in over 70 beds it is filled in summer with fragrance and colour. Every year, the rosen garden serenades take place there.

Passion und Heilsgeschehen - Ausstellung im Diözesanmuseum Bamberg
Weltberühmt und altehrwürdig -- das ist der Bamberger Dom. Seine Schatzkammer ist das Diözesanmuseum, das viele einzigartige alte Kostbarkeiten aufbewahrt. Aber immer wieder sucht man dort auch den Dialog mit der zeitgenössischen Bildenden Kunst, jüngstes Beispiel dafür ist die Ausstellung „Passion und Heilsgeschehen. Für Dom und Alltag mit Werken von Jörg Länger, die jüngst eröffnet wurde. Stefan Hoffmann hat sich die Ausstellung angesehen.
Sonderausstellung 1000 Jahre Michaelsberg
Der Michaelsberg ist ein wichtiger Teil der Bamberger Skyline. Dieses Jahr wird das ehemalige Benediktinerkloster 1000 Jahr alt. Das bedeutet auch 1000 Jahre Orden im Erzbistum Bamberg. Dazu gibt es eine sonderausstellung im Diözesanmuseum und vier weiteren Orten in Bamberg.
Bamberg zur Weihnachtszeit: Punsch-Führung
Ab April 2012 ist Bamberg mit der Bayerischen Landesgartenschau um eine Attraktion reicher. Als Pendant zum historischen Stadtpark Hain ist am entgegengesetzten Ende der historischen Innenstadt auf dem sogenannten ERBA-Gelände anstelle einer ehemaligen Textilfabrik ein neuer Nordpark entstanden. Als Bindeglied zwischen beiden Parks hat man die Regnitz ins Konzept integriert - was ist da naheliegender als ein abwechslungsreicher geführter Spaziergang am Flussufer, ausgehend von der Schleuse 100 aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, der beide Schwerpunkte mit zahlreichen historischen und neuen Sehenswürdigkeiten am Weg verbindet? Man wird erstaunt sein darüber, wie umfassend die Lebensader Regnitz das Leben der Bamberger geprägt hat, Fischern und Müllern Arbeit bot, als Transportweg diente, der Stadt allgemein meist Segen, manchmal aber auch Fluch war. Man wird aber auch feststellen, dass Bamberg kein in vergangenen Zeiten erstarrtes Museum ist, sondern ein lebendiger Ort, in dem auch Platz für Neues wie beispielsweise interessante zeitgenössische Kunst oder natürlich die neuen Attraktionen der Landesgartenschau bleibt.
Beethoven in Bonn
Im September 2013 waren die Bamberger Symphoniker Orchestra in residence des Beethovenfestes Bonn. Dort präsentierten sie u.a. Beethovens 3., 5. und 9. Symphonie sowie dessen Violinkonzert mit der Solistin Patricia Kopatchinskaja und stellten sie der 3. Symphonie von Witold Lutoslawski und Arnold Schönbergs Konzert für Klavier und Orchester op. 42 gegenüber.

A soft late-Baroque park in gentle surroundings. Hilltop gardens have a special appeal in summer, because of their views and breezes. The court used to retreat here from Bayreuth and, regarding it as a hermitage, dressed in monk's habits and slept in comfortable cells. Frederick the Great's sister, Wilhelmine, was given the estate in 1735 and, in her words, made it 'one of the loveliest places in Germany'. She thought of it as her Tusculum, after Cicero's villa. There are parterres, a fine semi-circular orangery, an extravagant fountain, an outdoor theatre in the form of a Roman ruin, a cascade and a heavily rusticated grotto with a group of nymphs. On a busy day it is not difficult to recall the idealistic frivolity of a South German court in the eighteenth century. A serpentine park was added in the nineteenth century, as was done on many German estates, to create a grand transition from 'art to nature'. Baroque geometry everywhere gives way to the serpentine geometry of woods and fields. Since the garden is on a hilltop, there are many framed landscape views with foreground, middleground and background.

Griechenland unabhängig vom Osmanischen Reich? Das fanden die europäischen Großmächte Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts hilfreich, schwächte es doch das türkische Imperium. Und so bugsierte man einen König auf den griechischen Thron: Otto von Bayern.
Otto, ein nachgeborener Sohn des Hauses Wittelsbach, blieb 30 Jahre lang König von Griechenland. Er brachte Soldaten und Beamte mit, baute eine funktionierende Verwaltung auf und schuf ein Rechtssystem. Sogar das bayerische Reinheitsgebot für Bier wurde eingeführt.
Doch vom Katholizismus zum orthodoxen Christentum zu konvertieren, das lehnte er ab. Griechenland blieb Spielball der Großmächte. Otto bekam auch keine Kinder, konnte also keine Dynastie begründen. 1862 wurde er von seinen Untertanen gestürzt und lebte bis zu seinem Tod in Bamberg.

Das Selbstbild Israels zwischen Souveränität, Macht und Gewalt
Öffentlicher Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Moshe Zimmermann (Jerusalem) im Rahmen der Europäischen Sommeruniversität für jüdische Studien, Hohenems
In Israel sollte der zionistische Traum vom „neuen Juden“ in Erfüllung gehen: Der jüdische Machtmensch, der Muskeljude sollte den schwachen Galutjuden ersetzen. Dank der Nachgeschichte der Shoah erfuhr man jedoch, dass im Schwachsein, im Opfersein, auch manche Vorteile liegen. So entwickelte Israel eine politische Taktik, die Levi Eshkol, Israels dritter Regierungschef, „Shimshon der Nebechdiker“ nannte. Zu dieser Taktik passt auch der Hiatus zwischen der Pose „Atommacht Israel“ und der stets posaunte Angst vor einer zweiten Shoah, und zwar in Israel. Der Vortrag befasst sich mit der Facettenreichen Geschichte dieser seltsamen Taktik und ihrer Wurzeln, die den Frieden für Israel eher unwahrscheinlich macht.
Eine Veranstaltung der Abteilung für Jüdische Geschichte und Kultur der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, des Instituts für Jüdische Studien der Universität Basel, des Zentrums für Jüdische Kulturgeschichte der Universität Salzburg, des Instituts für Judaistik an der Universität Wien, des Lehrstuhls für Judaistik der Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg und der Sigi-Feigel-Gastprofessur für Jüdische Studien an der Universität Zürich – in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Jüdischen Museum Hohenems.
