Huffington Post:
Capital city of Chile, Santiago is a place that took me by surprise. In regards to capital cities in South America, I have heard people rave about the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires, but rarely about Santiago, the capital of Chile. My travels in Chile took me from the coast, inland to Santiago and prior to arriving in Santiago, I had another mishap when withdrawing money and was moping my way into Santiago. Upon leaving the bus terminal in Santiago, I was impressed initially with the towering, impressive old structures, and enormous avenues of Chile's capital city. Checked into a great hostel in the Yungay, Brasil area of Santiago and went exploring.
Travels through Chile:
First day, I met up with a friend and we went to do one of the best things to do in Santiago, Chile, and that is to get above the city and see the incredible view and mountains via San Cristobal Hill. In Spanish, Cerro San Cristobal is one of the big mounds in the center of Santiago Chile and you can walk the incline path to the top for a warm, but gentle hike.
The Coast of Chile:
From the top of Cerro San Cristobal, you get an amazing view over all of Santiago including the other cerro, Santa Lucia.

Cable car ride to San Cristóbal Hill, Santiago, Chile
Cerro San Cristóbal (San Cristóbal Hill) is a hill in central-northern Santiago, Chile. It rises 880 m. AMSL and about 300 m. above the rest of Santiago; the peak is the second highest point in the city,
after Cerro Renca. Cerro San Cristóbal was named by the Spanish-Chilean San Cristóbal family, although its original name is Tupahue (Mapudungun: place of god or gods). The San Cristóbal family held a quarry on the hill's south side, close to the Mapocho River.
Limestone from the quarry was used in the building of the first containments of the Mapocho River and also in the construction of its bridges. San Cristobal is one of the main hills that make up Santiago's Metropolitan Park.
Cerro San Cristóbal began to be used within academic-scientific purposes in 1903 with the installation of the Mills Observatory, currently known as the Manuel Foster Observatory, twin of the Lick Observatory of the University of California.
On its summit there is a sanctuary dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, with a 22 meter statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, an amphitheater and a chapel. The statue of the Immaculate Conception measures 14 meters tall, and the pedestal on which it rests is 8.3 meters in height. It weighs 36,610 kilograms.[2] Within the pedestal there is a small chapel in which Pope John Paul II prayed and blessed the city of Santiago on April 1, 1987. The statue is lit up at night by lights placed on its sides, allowing it to be viewed from all over Santiago both day and night.
At the foot of the statue there is an amphitheater for holding masses or other religious ceremonies. Near the statue, there is also a small chapel for praying.
At the foothills of Cerro San Cristóbal are the Chilean National Zoo and a Japanese-style garden, and up there are also two municipal pools, Tupahue and Antilén.
Cerro San Cristóbal houses Santiago's largest public park: the Santiago Metropolitan Park (Parque Metropolitano).

Tour Santiago, Chile Like a Local: San Cristobal Hill
We finished up our Santiago Like a Local tour by taking the Metro back to Baquedano, tucking into what was supposed to be the best ice cream in Santiago (which we give a -10 rating and was very expensive) before walking through Barrio Bellavista. I will be uploading a separate video about Bellavista later in this series.
The walk led to the funicular up to the top of San Cristobal Hill and its park. There are good but smoggy views of this huge city from the top. Admission to the park is free except for the funicular but visitors can also walk or bike up to the top. Completely exhausted by now, Marine and I couldn't put one foot in front of the other and taxi'd back to Holiday Inn Express. What a great day!

Santiago de Chile view is from San Cristobal Hill
This clear weather as you can see is very rare. Only during after rain and only during after November till April you can experience this kind of weather or skies. Since Santiago is surrounded by mountains and hills this city is polluted. The dust is unable to be flown away from winds. Very rarely we can experience this type of clear view.
