San Damiano - Assisi
La chiesa e il convento di San Damiano si trovano poco distanti dal centro storico di Assisi.
San Francesco proprio in questo luogo udì per la prima volta la voce di Cristo. Il Crocifisso, oggi custodito nella basilica di Santa Chiara, disse al santo Francesco, và e ripara la mia casa che, come vedi, è in rovina (alludendo alla crisi della Chiesa). Il santo da queste parole ricevette forza e conferma nella sua vocazione.
Il primo restauro della chiesa di San Damiano è stato compiuto proprio da san Francesco che nel 1212 vi accolse santa Chiara e le sue compagne e qui compose il Cantico delle Creature.
Le Clarisse edificarono un piccolo dormitorio e rimasero a san Damiano fino al 1260, poco dopo la morte di santa Chiara.

Assisi (Perugia) - Chiesa e convento di San Damiano è uno dei luoghi più sacri alle memorie dei primordi francescani.
Qui il Crocifisso, di cui si vede una copia sull’altare (l’originale è ora custodito nella Basilica di Santa Chiara), parlò a Francesco, dicendogli “Va’ e ripara la mia casa, che come vedi, va in rovina”.
San Francesco si adoperò per ricostruire la semplice chiesetta e in seguito comprese di essere a riparare l’intera Chiesa di Cristo. Qui ben presto si stabilì Santa Chiara con le “povere dame”, fondandovi il proprio monastero e vi rimase fino alla sua morte, per 42 anni, di cui ben 28 inferma.
Qui il Serafico Padre fu ospitato per qualche tempo verso la fine della propria vita, in preda a una grave malattia” e vi compose il “Cantico delle Creature”.
Il complesso comprende, oltre l’antica chiesetta, alcuni spazi che ci parlano della storia di Chiara: il minuscolo coro dove le suore si riunivano in preghiera, il dormitorio comune con il luogo dove Chiara morì, il refettorio.

Overlooking the town of Assisi are two fortresses, Rocca Maggiore (Greater fortress) and Rocca Minore (Lesser fortress). Walk with us through the very well restored ruins, through tunnels and have a panoramic view atop the lookout tower. Then, travel to the sanctuary of San Damiano where Saint Claire started the order of The Poor Claires and lived there for many years until her death. A follower of Saint Francis, Claire lived her life devoted to God.

San Damiano is a church with a monastery near Assisi, Italy. Built in the 12th century, it was the first monastery of the Order of Saint Clare, where Saint Clare built her community. The church has a hut-shaped façade; the entrance is preceded by a short portico with three round arcades supported by brickwork pillars. Above the central arch is a circular rose window. The interior has a single nave with ogival barrel vaults. The right wall is home to a rectangular chapel with, at the altar, a wooden crucifix executed by Innocenzo da Petralia in 1637. The nave ends with a deep apse with a modern stone altar, a Baroque wooden tabernacle and the choir.
Afterwards Saint Francis took action to physically repair the structure of the San Damiano church, although he eventually realized that God's message to him was to restore the entire Catholic Church as a whole body rather than literally repair one stone structure. The San Damiano cross which putatively spoke to Francis currently hangs in the Basilica of Saint Clare in Assisi. Other artworks in the church include a 14th-century Madonna with Child between Sts. Damian and Rufinus fresco, located in the apse.
This convent became the home of Saint Clare of Assisi and her followers in 1212. Work was carried out to provide buildings for this religious community. The Sisters stayed until Clare's death in 1253 when it was thought too dangerous to remain and it was exchanged with the Canons of San Rufino for the chapel of San Giorgio. The convent is open free of charge to the public. Downstairs off the cloister is the refectory in its original state. A fresco in the refectory recalls the visit of Pope Gregory IX when he asked Clare to bless the loaves, which is said to have resulted in crosses appearing on the loaves. Upstairs are St Clare's Oratory where the Blessed Sacrament was kept. Next to this is the dormitory. A cross marks the place where Clare died on 11 August 1253.

Crucifix of San Damiano In the 13th century, the Crucifix of San Damiano hung in the chapel of the same name. St. Francis had a decisive moment in his conversion experience when praying one day before this icon when he heard the message from Christ Jesus: “Francis, go and repair my church which is falling into ruin.” This launched him on his journey into the heart of God. St. Clare, who lived at San Damiano, had the opportunity to meditate before this icon for forty-one years. Because this Crucifix played an important role in both of their lives, we strive to know more about it because it is one of the keys that opens their spirituality to us today.

San Damiano is a church with a monastery near Assisi. It was the first monastery of the Order of Saint Clare, where Saint Clare built her community. Perhaps one of the most significant aspects regarding the church as well was Saint Francis' encounter with Christ.The cross from which Christ spoke to Saint Francis is known as the San Damiano cross.
