ITALY: EXPLORING the cave of ST FRANCIS ???? (SAN FRANCESCO D' ASSISI)
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit The Eremo delle Carceri which is a hermitage complex located in a steep forest gorge in Umbria, in central Italy, four kilometers above Assisi.
In the 13th century, Saint Francis of Assisi would often come to this place to pray and contemplate, as did other hermits before him. When he first came in 1205, the only building here was a tiny 12th-century oratory. Soon, other men followed him to the mountain, finding their own isolated caves nearby in which to pray. The oratory became known as Santa Maria delle Carceri after the small prisons occupied by friars in the area.
Francis dedicated himself to a life of preaching and missions, but throughout his life he would frequently withdraw to the Carceri to pray.
In the centuries that followed, various buildings were added around St. Francis' cave and the original oratory, forming the sizable complex that exists today. Today some Franciscan monks live there and visitors are welcome.
Italy, a European country with a long Mediterranean coastline, has left a powerful mark on Western culture and cuisine. Its capital, Rome, is home to the Vatican as well as landmark art and ancient ruins. Other major cities include Florence, with Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David and Brunelleschi's Duomo; Venice, the city of canals; and Milan, Italy’s fashion capital.

Places to see in ( Mater - Italy ) San Francesco d'Assisi
The church of San Francesco d'Assisi is a place of Catholic cult of Matera in Baroque style , located in the central Piazza San Francesco. The first nucleus of the church was an ancient hypogean church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul , which can still be visited through a hatch from a chapel and containing a fresco depicting the visit of Pope Urban II in Matera in 1093 . The name is traced back to a visit to the church reported by some chroniclers of St. Francis of Assisi in 1218.
The church has undergone numerous transformations, with an original structure dating back to the first half of the thirteenth century, enlarged in the fifteenth century, to assume the current state in the eighteenth century with the construction of the Baroque facade by the architects Vito Valentino and Tommaso Pennetta.
The baroque façade houses in the upper part three statues, with the Immaculate in the center and San Francesco and Sant'Antonio on the sides. The interior has a single nave with a painted ceiling, along which side chapels open.
The nave ends with the quadrangular apse , introduced by a pointed arch and covered with a cross vault ; close to the back wall, behind the main altar, is the choir , whose parapet is decorated with a 16th-century polyptych with nine tempera paintings on wood, attributed to Lazzaro Bastiani. Above it there is the pipe organ , built by Fratelli Ruffatti in 1955 and modified by them in 1978 , with electric transmission and with 22 registers on two manuals and pedal.
