Ophir Pass 4WD Trail - Silverton, Colorado
For the full trail guide please visit:
Ophir Pass is often noted as possibly the easiest of the well-known 4x4 passes in the area. The off-road trail takes you along the San Juan Range towards Telluride and ends up in the town of Ophir. This old mining town, started in 1881, peaked at about 500 before the mining ended and now has a bustling population of roughly 180 people. These lucky folks sit in a bowl surrounded by beautiful 13,000 ft peaks all around.
You actually travel through two forests here and at waypoint 6 the trail designation number changes from 679 to 630 as you move over the pass and move from the San Juan Forest to the Uncompahgre National Forest. While some of the shelf roads may test your fortitude, the views off this iconic trail in the San Juan’s is well worth an afternoon.
For Jeep owners, there’s a special note here. Jeep has designated some trails as Badge of Honor trails and this is one of the few in Colorado. Its fame means that Jeep will recognize if you ran it and provide you with a badge top put on your rig showing you completed the trail.

San Juan Ski Mountaineering from Molas Pass to Sultan Mountain to Silverton
On Sunday, April 14th 2019, Peter and I committed to this mountaineering adventure. We were fully prepared with avalanche gear, proper training, and a plan for the day. The most dangerous part of the adventure was boot packing across the steep southern slope below the saddle between Grand Turk and Sultan Mountain.

Camping Trip - Weminuche Wilderness, San Juan Mtns, SW Colorado
A vid/slideshow of memories and sum glowsticking (at 4:48) from this amazing place buried deep in the mountains of Colorado.
One of my most favorite and most camped places in Colorado is the Williams Creek Reservoir area at the gateway to the Weminuche Wilderness in the San Juan Mtns of south-western Colorado, north of Pagosa Springs. Its a 4.5 hour drive from where i live in the denver metro area, but the seclusion and intense serenity of the Weminuche wilderness is worth much much more than that. Over my two trips there this summer, ive compiled enough photos/footage to create a slideshow/vid that can at least briefly show the majesty of the place and the moments created between you and the people you go with =] I hope you enjoy.

Silverton, Colorado during the Hardrockers Holiday 2013 HQ
This video is Dedicated to Tiffany-Shaun Wilkins for sharing their weekend during the Hardrockers Holiday and giving me the opportunity to ride my mountain bike in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Shaun said that pictures don't do it justice and he's right but sometimes I need reminders of where I've been. So on that cool morning in August I took all the mental pictures I could while riding through the beautiful streets of this turn of this century mining town looking into the thin layers of clouds across the backdrop of the beautiful mountains wanting to capture every minute during my 6 mile route.

Start living your adventure by commenting and sharing! Pass through the old Victorian mining town of Silverton, which was established in the early 1870's. Then venture off the paved roads on to old mining trails heading northeast out of Silverton. Spectacular tumbling waterfalls, snow-fed rivers, and cool mountain air greet you as you wined through the old mining towns. Travel higher into the alpine tundra where you'll view the summer wild flowers shining in a rainbow of colors, especially in mid to late summer. Marmots, white-tailed deer, and elk herds may be seen as hawks and eagles keep an eye on you from above.
Silverton Colorado Saves its Newspaper
In these times of newspaper closings and sales, the Silverton Standard & the Miner has gotten a reprieve. When the owner of the Colorado newspaper, which has been part of the community for more than a century, decided to close it, the editor came up with an unusual idea: Ask the local historical society to take over the paper. And the society did, saving the Standards rich history and connection to the people it serves.
