The Visits to the best tobacco plantations in Vuelta Abajo, San Luis Pinar del Río
Big Smoke Cigar Kuwait @ The one of best tobacco plantations in Vuelta Abajo, San Luis Pinar del Río .
The finest cigar tobacco-growing land in the world. Vuelta Abajo is the main source of tobacco for Habanos, and the only region that grows all types of leaf.
But even here less than a quarter of the tobacco-growing land enjoys the Vegas Finas de Primera status that is required for the growing of tobacco for Habanos.
San Luis: Small town at the epicentre of Cuban tobacco culture, known above all for the cultivation of wrapper leaves.
Here you find the world-famous El Corojo Vega; also Cuchillas de Barbacoa, location of the celebrated Robaina family farm.
San Juan y Martínez: The other famous small town, this one with a particular reputation for the cultivation of fillers and binders. The famous Hoyo de Monterrey plantation is located here.
Pinar del Rio: Name of the province that embraces all of the important growing areas in the west of Cuba, and the name of the city at the centre of the province. To the south of the city is some of the finest land for growing Habano tobacco -- the Vizcaino plantation, for instance, which is famous for its wrappers.

Valle de los Ingenios, also named Valley de los Ingenios or Valley of the Sugar Mills, is a series of three interconnected valleys about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) outside of Trinidad, Cuba. The three valleys, San Luis, Santa Rosa, and Meyer, were a center for sugar production from the late 18th century until the late 19th century.
At the peak of the industry in Cuba there were over fifty sugar cane mills in operation in the three valleys, with over 30,000 slaves working in the mills and on the sugar cane plantations that surrounded them.
The entire area covers 270 km2 (100 sq mi) and includes the sites of over 70 former sugar mills.
Sugar production was an important industry for Cuba from the earliest settlement by the Spanish, who introduced sugar cane to the island in 1512, and trade in the commodity enriched Trinidad and the surrounding areas. The island became the world's foremost producer of sugar during the late 18th and 19th centuries, when sugar production was the main industry. The climate and soil were perfect for the cultivation of sugar cane, and good ports and interior connections facilitated transport and exportation of the refined sugar. To prevent the sugar from spoiling, rapid transport was necessary, and to this end a special railway line was laid down through the valley in the late 1880s, connecting the Valle de los Ingenios with Trinidad and the port at Casilda, 6 km (4 mi) from Trinidad, on the coast. The valleys are provided with water by several rivers, among them Rio Agabama, Rio Caracusey, Rio de Ay, and Rio Tayaba.
Due to the virtual extinction of the native Cubans through contact with diseases brought by the European settlers and attrition though their poor treatment as slaves, it was necessary for the Spanish plantation owners to import slaves from Africa to work in the sugar cane fields and in the mills. The abolition of slavery by the Spanish in 1820 made the practice of importing slaves more difficult; but it was not until the Wars of Independence in the 19th century that the economic dominance of the area came to an end, as many of the sugar mills were abandoned or became run down.
In 1988, Valle de los Ingenios and neighbouring Trinidad were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Although most of the sugar mills are in ruins, intact structures endure at some sites, including Guachinango, where the plantation house remains, and the plantation of Manaca Iznaga, where the owner's house, a tower and some barracones, the original slave quarters, still stand. Although the barracones are now used as housing and are in poor repair, the house (which has been converted into a restaurant) and the Iznaga Tower are well maintained.
The 45 metre (147 ft) tower was constructed sometime in 1816 by the owner, Alejo Maria Iznaga y Borrell [1]. According to experts, the bell that formerly hung on top of the tower announced the beginning and the end of the work day for the slaves, as well as the times for prayers to the Holy Virgin in the morning, midday, and afternoon. It was also used to sound an alarm in case of fire or slave escape. The height and magnificence of the tower served to display Iznaga's power over his slaves and his stature in the sugar industry and local society; at one time it was the tallest structure in Cuba. A recognized landmark of the region, the Iznaga Tower testifies to the area's flourishing material culture in the Spanish colonial period. The large bell now rests at the foot of the tower.

EPISODE 002 THE LEGACY OF TOBACCO
Hirochi Robaina is a fifth-generation tobacco farmer in Vuelta Abajo, Cuba’s illustrious, tobacco-growing region situated in San Luis, Pinar del Río.
Following the traditions of his ancestors, and most notably of his grandfather Don Alejandro Robaina, Hirochi is at the helm of La Finca El Pinar Robaina, perhaps the most famous tobacco farm in the region, if not the world. Initially known for the high yield of quality tobacco for the wrapper, which is the most difficult to produce, the plantation now focuses its tobacco production on the Vegas Robaina premium cigar brand, exclusively distributed by Habanos SA, the Cuban state-owned tobacco company.

Cuba's tobacco crop bigger and better in 2018, officials say
(1 Mar 2018) Growing yields and better quality tobacco has given Cuban farmers and cigar producers one of their best years ever, leading to 12 percent growth and almost 500 million US dollars in revenue, according to government and company officials, one of the few bright spots in the islands struggling economy.
Habanos S.A., the Cuban Government company that controls cigar sales around the world, says its product line has benefited from greater world demand, especially in China, and a bumper crop and better quality yield from tobacco farmers around the island.
In Pinar del Rio province, 160 kilometers west of Havana, where much of the island's tobacco is grown, farmers say a favorable climate has provided them with bigger yields and a higher quality tobacco, and expect 2018 to be even better.
49 year-old Carlos Luis Marrero cultivates 5 hectares of tobacco on his farm in Pinar del Rio. He says the quality of his tobacco has never been better, the result of less rain and a mild winter and expects his crop to exceed last year's by a wide margin.
Marrero says he sells his crop to a government cooperative at a fixed price, but expects to his income to increase slightly because of higher yields.
Buyers of Cuban tobacco products from 50 countries are on the island looking at the latest products from Habanos S.A. and making deals for finished hand-rolled Cuban cigars at an annual trade fair showcasing Cuba's famous stogies.
Government and company officials say growing world demand has given the Cuban tobacco industry one of its best years in 2017, and expect the trend to continue to be positive going forward.

A place called Paradise in Cuba
Stunning drone footage of the Finca Organica El Paraiso in Vinales Cuba. This farm, with its restaurant, is consistently one of our most highly rated destinations in Cuba by our Cuba tour participants.
It is a fully organic farm with fantastic views of the Vinales valley, especially at sunset. The food produced on the farm is used in the on-site restaurant which, while not a vegetarian restaurant, does serve plenty of vegetarian and vegan dishes, and something out of the ordinary for Cuba. Many of the Cuban Adventures Cuba Tours include a visit to this farm, and nearly all of the tours that don't include it, end up going there anyway as an optional excursion.

Rolling Behikes at Hector Luis Prieto Tobacco Plantation (Pinar del Rio)
Vegas Robaina Estate
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Don Alejandro who
passed away this past Saturday, April 17th 2010 at the age of 91, in
his homeland of Pinar del Rio, located in San Luis, Cuba. A legend
and master farmer behind the Vegas Robaina brand, he was not only a
legacy in Cuba, but a warm and welcoming man who shared his life and
passion for tobacco and Cuban cigars, with admirers from all spectrums
of the world.
It was an honor for our team to be part of an afternoon spent in good
company with this welcoming man, who not only allowed us to be part
of his home that day, but made us feel as if we were part of his
family. We enjoyed his spirit, and the strength he displayed to sit
and converse with us, although he was week and ill, and above all, his
hospitality. Although he had been having a difficult day, that he had
spent in bed for the most part of the morning and afternoon, his
spirits were lifted when his grandson, Hiroshi Robaina, serenaded him
with his voice while singing Karaoke to some wonderful traditional
Cuban songs.
We invite you to participate in our afternoon of sharing some of his last
joys with family and welcomed guests. Amongst the photos you will see
his home, his farm land, his living quarters, his son Carlos and
grandsons and great grand-daughters (including Hiroshi and his
daughters, Laura and Leora?), and many more joyous images of the great
Don Alejandro.
We also extend our sympathies and condolences to his immediate family
and wish that they remember him fondly and continue in the steps of
his legacy.
