When ready, browse vacation packages to San Marino:
Find the longstanding city-state, #SanMarino, in eastern Italy’s countryside. A #vacation here means enjoying age-old architecture, excellent food, and shopping delights.
Rising from the republic’s rolling hills is Mount Titano, where the country’s founder, Saint Marinus, sought refuge in the 3rd Century. Over the centuries, three towers were built to ward off invaders; today these towers watch over a country overflowing with history, culture and beauty.
Just beyond the towers lies the republic’s ancient capital, San Marino City. The heart and soul of this city is Liberty Square, home to the Statue of Liberty and the Palazzo Pubblico. Wherever you turn you’ll see tributes to the republic’s founder, no more so than in San Marino Basilica, where the bones of the saint now rest beneath the altar.
San Marino is a welcoming escape for lovers of art and history, and a tax-free haven for shoppers.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Landmarks[edit]
Huntington Library, in a landscape setting by Beatrix Farrand
San Marino is the location of the Huntington Library and gardens. In 1919 Henry Huntington provided limited access to the art collections, and to the rare books and historical documents, housed in the library and in his large Neoclassical–Palladian mansion, as well as to the surrounding botanical gardens, all collectively known as The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, or The Huntington, to the public.[18]
View of the Old Mill from rear courtyard
El Molino Viejo (The Old Mill), completed about 1816 as a grist mill for Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, is in San Marino. The original two-story structure measured 53 feet (16 m) by 26 feet (7.9 m). It is the oldest commercial building in Southern California.[19][20] The town is located on the former lands of the historic Rancho Huerta de Cuati.[21]
The Edwin Hubble House: From 1925 to 1953, this two-story stucco home was the residence of one of America's greatest 20th-century astronomers, Edwin Hubble, who, among other accomplishments, discovered extragalactic nebulae and their separation from each other. It is a National Historic Landmark.[22]
The Michael White Adobe House, is located on the high school campus and houses the San Marino Historical Society archives.[23]
The University of Southern California owns a house in San Marino which is used as the residence of the President of the University. The residence and grounds are often used for University Presidential events.
Rotary Centennial Clock in San Marino, California
Across from City Hall is the Centennial Clock, standing at the northeast corner of Huntington Drive and San Marino Avenue, donated to the community in 2005 by the Rotary Club of San Marino in celebration of Rotary International's 100th anniversary. Dedicated on July 4, 2005, the nineteen foot high clock includes a time capsule with artifacts donated by residents and community organizations which is to be opened on July 4, 2039 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Club of San Marino.[24]

FIFA World Cup 2014 Qualifier
England Goals - Rooney 35'(pen),70' Welbeck 37',72' Oxlade-Chamberlain 77'
ENGLAND cruised to victory to move top of World Cup qualifying Group H as San Marino were put to the sword at Wembley.
Captain Wayne Rooney scored his 30th and 31st international goals to move fifth in his country's all-time scoring charts.
His Manchester United team-mate Danny Welbeck bagged a brace of his own and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also scored to finish the rout.
Rooney opened the scoring on 34 minutes from the spot after Welbeck had been brought down in the box by visiting goalkeeper Aldo Junior Simoncini.
Welbeck then doubled their lead three minutes later with an audacious finish as England completed dominated proceedings going into the break.
The second half saw the hosts remain in total control but it took them until the 70th minute to put a gloss on the victory.
And it was Rooney again who got the fans cheering as he bent a low shot into the far corner of the net beyond Simoncini.
Two minutes later, Welbeck netted his second of the match and England's fourth when he turned Cleverley's cross in at the near post.
Arsenal starlet Oxlade-Chamberlain got on the scoresheet himself with a fine clipped effort that went sailing into the net after a neat lay-off from Cleverley.
Substitute Jonjo Shelvey -- on for Michael Carrick -- almost had a debut goal for himself late on but his effort was parried by Simoncini.

The Most Complex International Borders in the World
In this video I look at some of the most complex international border. Of course, there are more complex borders in the world, but this video looks at some of my favourites.
I look at the 3 enclaves countries of the world: Vatican City, San Marino and Lesotho. As well as Campione d'Italia, an Italian exclave which is an enclave of Switzerland.
I then take things up a notch and look at enclaves within enclaves. The town of Baarle which is in the Netherlands and Belgium is an incredibly complicated border. But not quite as much as the Cooch Behar region of India and Bangladesh.
This is followed by a look at the odd situation of Bir Tawil, the only unclaimed land on Earth outside of Antarctica (which is itself a place for complex borders!)
I finish off the video by looking at the island of Cyprus, which may look like a borderless island, but is in fact far from it!

15 Smallest Countries in the World
From OBSCURE Islands, to the Vatican, these are the 15 SMALLEST Countries in The World !
Subscribe to American Eye
8. St Kitts and Nevis
Just like that we are back in the Caribbean again with St Kitts and Nevis, located roughly 150 miles east of Puerto Rico. It’s known for its beautiful cloud shrouded mountains and picturesque tropical beaches. The small population of only 54,000 people, inhabits both islands, with the capital, Basseterre located on the northern side. The dormant volcano, mount liamuiga, creates a large crater lake that you see in this photo, and is a popular hiking location for extreme adventurers.
7. Marshall Island
This island country is located near the equator making up 1,156 islands total. Despite the sheer number of islands, it’s still currently the 7th smallest nation in the world. It was named after explorer John Marshall, although the natives, were of course there much longer.During world war 2, these island were under firm control by the Japanese until the united states managed a successful invasion in world war II. We should have mentioned the marshall islands on our Radioactive places video and during the 60’s these islands were used as proving grounds for nuclear weapons by the US. In 1952 the first hydrogen bombs were dropped here. American paid over 759 million dollars to the Marshallese in reparations, because money solves a lot of issues.
6. Liechenstein
This tiny nation is bordered by Switzerland to the west and Austria to the east, tucked away in the Swiss alps and is the richest country in the world by GDP per capita. With an unemployment rate of 1.5 and a population of 37,000 it’s a tax dodger’s dream to live here. Not being a member of the European Union, the residents are not subject to the same tax rates of neighboring countries. This principality is still ruled by an extremely wealthy prince by the name of Hans Adam the II with a net worth of roughly 3.5 Billion dollars. The capital city of Vaduz has around 5000 people
5. San Marino
Completely landlocked by Italy, the tiny state of San Marino is proud to say that they are one of the world’s oldest independent states. It’s also one of the richest in terms of GDP per capita. Taking up only 24 square miles its still only the 3rd smallest country in Europe. We’ll get to those other 2 later. The small republic has managed to slither out of many wars, protested the unification of Italy and won’t even join European Union. Well done San Marino! It’s hear you’ll also find the beautiful fortress of Guaita on Mount Titano!
4. Tuvalu
This nation was formally known as the Ellice Islands, and found half way between Hawaii and Australia in the Pacific Ocean. With a population of only 10,000 people, everyone here is of Polynesian and micronesian descent. The creation mythology is important the inhabitants of this country and they claim that a group of spirits raised from the ocean floor and their ancestors were giants from Samoa.
3. Nauru
The Smallest Island nation in the world is Nauru, located east of Australia. The history behind this country might not be as charming as some of the others, but we’re not gonna sugar coat anything! The tiny island was exploited for it’s heavy deposits of phosphate which is normally used for fertilizer, and it enjoyed a steady income during the 1980’s. Nowadays all the phosphate is gone and the country has a 90 percent unemployment rate. This country also leads the world in obesity with roughly 40 percent of it’s citizens suffering from obesity.
2. Monaco
On the flip side Monaco is one of the richest countries in the world and it certainly enjoys its independance. With many high taxes in the country of France, the rich dodge paying ridiculous amounts of taxes. It’s known for it’s high class luxury, harbor filled with yachts and of course, the Monte Carlo Casino. Just to be tourist here, you should probably consider bringing a few stacks of euros with you. Crowds pack the streets for the annual Formula one race, which has taken place since 1951. With many europeans drawn to the luxury, the beaches and the bourgeoisie lifestyle, it’s become the world’s most densely populated country with 37,000 people occupying 499 acres or less than 1 square mile.
1.
Vatican City
So the entire catholic church isn’t enough for the pope! He gets his own micronation! The vatican is actually walled off from the rest of the Rome and the infamous Basilica di San Pietro lies with. It shares a 2 mile border with Italy and is about 5 times smaller than Monaco, or one eighth the size of New York City’s Central Park. The obelisk that sits at St Peter’s square was captured by the Roman Emperor Caligula from the Egyptian city of Heliopolis and weighs 350 tons! Popes in the past have refused to leave the Vatican and also refuse to recognize any authority from the italian government, since the 14th century.

Arrival In San Marino, 1954 - FIlm 95869
Tourist film on San Marino Italy, 1954.
At the border crossing from Italy to San Marino, people sit at an outdoor tables and chairs with parasol, as two vehicles drive past. A man leads 2 oxen who are pulling a cart. Panning view of the three San Marino hill top castles in the distance. View of several cars taken from above the road, the cars navigate the tight, steep hairpin bends up to the castle. A white uniformed guard at the entrance to the city, points to where the cars should park. A sign on the wall. Crowd of people enter through the archway into the city. Camera pans up to the top of the castellated tower of the castle.
