National Shrine of St. Michael and the Archangels
The late 16th-early 17th centuries which marked the beginnings of Spanish rule in the Philippines, in Manila in particular, also marked the influx of migrants to this newly-Christianized city. Most of these migrants are Japanese refugees fleeing from the persecution of Christians by Japan's shogun government. (who eventually closed the country from foreign contact) They eventually settled in what is now the area of San Marcelino in northern Ermita. To meet the needs of this new community, the Spanish Jesuits decided to erect a parish for them. By 1611, the church was finished and the parish established, dedicated to the archangel-soldier St. Michael or San Miguel.

[HD] St. Jude Thaddeus Church, San Miguel Manila
The beginnings of St. Jude Thaddeus Archdiocesan Shrine can be traced back to the evangelization of the Chinese in Manila in 1588 under the Dominican Fathers which was very successufl so that in 1670, the number of baptized Chinese exceeded 70,000. Due to the so called Chinese revolts, the Chinese ministry was placed under the secular clergy in the middle of the 18th century. Because of this, it was deemed impractical to have a separate parish for the Chinese.
It was then decided that the Chinese parish be attached to the Binondo parish which was under the care of the Dominicans but without authority or independence. When the Americans came in 1898, the Binondo parish was endorsed to the secular clergy.
Floating Bridge Estero de San Miguel Mendiola Arch Manila
Music: Love Now by Eveningland
The short route from Mendiola to J. Nepomuceno is thru a passage with a floating bridge walkway at the PRRC rehabilitated Estero de San Miguel. It's almost beside the.Mendiola Peace Arch. Shown here are some landmarks: National Teachers College, San Sebastian Church and St. Rita College. Thanks to the PRRC, MMDA, and all those River warriors who contributed to this wonderful rehabilitatetd Estero de San Miguel.

The Manila Battleground Called Mendiola
For many of the baby boomer generation, Mendiola is a historic battlefield in the march to freedom. The street and the short bridge that spans two major thoroughfares leading to the presidential Malacanang Palace in Manila's San Miguel district bear witness to what is referred to as The Battle of Mendiola and the Mendiola Massacre in the seventies and eighties.
The area hasn't changed much except for the peace arch and the monument of Chino Roces, the Manila Times publisher and anti-martial law advocate, in whose name the bridge is now dedicated.

Quiapo is a district of Manila, Philippines. It derives its name from the water cabbage (Pistia stratiotes), which is named quiapo or kiapo in the Tagalog language. Referred to as the Old Downtown of Manila, Quiapo is home to the Quiapo Church, where the feast of the Black Nazarene is held with millions of people attending annually. Quiapo has also made a name for itself as a place for marketplace bargain hunting.
Plaza Miranda, in the heart of the Quiapo district, is a town square named after Jose Sandino y Miranda, who served as secretary of the treasury of the Philippines from 1853 to 1863.[2] It is located in front of the Quiapo Church, and has become a popular site for political rallies. On August 21, 1971, while the Liberal Party held its miting de avance in the plaza, a bomb exploded, killing nine and injuring almost 100 civilians.
The Quiapo district is also home to a sizable Muslim population. The Golden Mosque and Green Mosque are located here.
Stores offering herbal products, and a large population of self-described fortune tellers, surround the Quiapo church. Thievery and sales of illegally copied media[3][4] are prevalent in the district.
In recent years, the local government of Manila, spearheaded by then-Mayor Lito Atienza, launched the Buhayin ang Maynila (Revitalize Manila) project which greatly rehabilitated Quiapo and its vicinities, most especially Plaza Miranda, Quinta Market, the Arsenio Lacson Underpass and the University Belt. Parts of Rizal Avenue, starting from Carriedo Street to Recto Avenue, were converted into pedestrian shopping arcades.
Quiapo is geographically located at the very center of the city of Manila. It is bounded by the Pasig River and Estero de San Miguel to the south, San Miguel to the east, Recto Avenue to the north and Rizal Avenue to the west.

Presentation of Estero De San Miguel Micro Medium-Rise Building Model Unit 2/19/2014
Sampaloc, Manila
19 February 2014
As government pushes with its initiative to help the marginalized members of the society, President Benigno S. Aquino III personally inspected the newly established Estero de San Miguel micro Medium-Rise Building (mMRB) located in Sampaloc, Manila.
In his remarks, President Aquino emphasized that this housing project will provide much safer homes for the informal settler families (ISF) residing in perilous areas in various parts of Metro Manila. He added that their relocation will also address massive flooding problems around the area.
Constructed under the Oplan Likas program of the Department of Interior and Local Government, a total number of 3,400 ISFs were successfully relocated to more decent homes. Meanwhile, in Estero de San Miguel alone, 167 ISFs will benefit from this housing project.
In partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Health (DOH), Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), Urban Poor Associates (UPA) and Nagkakaisang Mamamayan ng Legarda (NML), mMRB is the first environment friendly housing project in an in-city relocation site. Its distinct features allow the conservation of power and water and can withstand an intensity-7 earthquake.

U-belt Series - Intramuros
University Belt is located not just in one area where many schools are clustered all together mostly in three districts of Manila namely in Sampaloc, San Miguel and Quiapo. There are other cluster of schools found in other places in Manila such as in Intramuros, Ermita and Malate which is still considered as part of the University Belt.
In this particular vlog, we feature the schools located in the historic walled city of Intramuros. Back in the past during the Spanish Era, Intramuros is the center and the integral part of the city of Manila. It is here where the seat of power is located unlike now which is the Malacañang Palace situated in San Miguel. The government, military, commerce, churches and schools are all within the walled city during those times. The schools found here today are Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Lyceum of the Philippines, Mapua University, Manila High School (my alma mater), PNTC Colleges and the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM).
