Military Appreciation Softball Tourney Returns to Sand Creek Park
For the fourth year, a local softball tournament is raising money for Minnesota military families.
From September 7th through the 9th dozens of teams were able to break fundraising records for the Military Appreciation Softball Tournament at Sand Creek Park.
Active military members, veterans and immediate family members of servicemen and service women are allowed to participate.
“It’s the six degrees of separation, my uncle’s kid, my kid, my grandfather, somebody served in this state,” said Tournament Director Ed Sicora who is also a NAVY Veteran.
The tournament raised more than $12,000 for charities that benefit military families. They include: Tee it Up for Troops, the Minnesota Patriot Guard, Fishing with Vets, Hometown Hero Outdoors, and the Minnesota Warriors Hockey Club.
“Being a veteran, giving back to veterans to me means more to me than just about anything I can come up with,” said Sicora.
Winning this year’s tournament was the U.S. Marine Corps team. They take over the bragging rights from the U.S. NAVY team for the next year.

KAYAKING Explore Minnesota - My Favorite Minnesota
Whitewater kayaking in Minnesota has been a well-kept secret. Big drops in elevation are not all that expected in a prairie state. Minnesota is not mountainous, but it has some of the most exciting and intense rivers in the country. Paddlers are still discovering new features as people see whitewater in unexpected areas of the state. Paddlers can indulge in the extreme, or they can just get out and enjoy the camaraderie of good friends and have fun paddling. People of all ages and abilities participate. Even young kids are having fun paddling whitewater in Minnesota. I used to dislike summer for its heat. After learning how to paddle---I grew to love summer. Whitewater paddlers never get hot when they're wet on the rivers. Some of my favorite Minnesota rivers are The Lower St. Louis River, The Lester River, Amity Creek, Sucker Creek, The Split Rock River, The Devil Track River and The Cascade River---but they're ALL great fun!
Get out & do some paddling!

WDIO TV UP NORTH, Duluth Minnesota, Camp Nathanael Hinkley Minnesota, Rock Climbing Story
This video uploaded by the photographer who photographed the story. Paul M. Walsh.
To overcome fear, you often have to face it head on. These young men did just that when they tackled the Sandstone Cliffs near Hinckley.
After spending a week practicing on a rock wall at Camp Nathanael, these guys gave climbing and rappelling a try on some real rocks under the watchful eye of James Lundberg.
They have control over their own descent and I can pull them and stop them if I want, so the instills a little more trust and confidence, Lundberg said.
13-year-old Ryan Brown had mixed emotions as he approached the edge. It was kind of half and half. I got some thrill and then I got a little nervous because I've never really rappelled before, Brown said.
And 16-year-old Kyle Crowell thought the first few steps took the most courage. Right as you go over the edge it pulls and you drop a couple of feet, Crowell said.
Your heart kind of skips a beat for a second because you're in freefall for just the tiniest little second. It kind of scares you but it's a nice easy glide the rest of the way down. It's cool.
It makes me a little nervous. I know I'm tied in but it's a cool feeling to be able to look over the edge and see how far down everything is and how it looks from so far up, said Jack Harper, also 16 years old.
Harper had rappelled and climbed here once before and will never forget that feeling.
The first time I rappelled down this cliff I was pretty scared when I had to lean back over the edge, Harper said. But I just trusted the person who was holding my rope and I had a great time.
The event taught the climbers trust and encouraged them to push themselves on even bigger challenges.
I think they have confidence to overcome other fears, Lundberg said.
There's always a different way to climb it. I can always go faster and push harder, Crowell said. It's a really good challenge.

Frontenac State Park in April, No Lake Monster
It doesn't matter what the season, I love Minnesota's State Parks. My brother, along with his wife and daughter decided to try an April trip to Frontenac State Park which is just South East of Redwing on the Mississippi River.
April is a great time to go camping. My brother set up a tent for him and his family. While I did some SUV RVing.
For the last couple of years I've been gradually outfitting my Honda Pilot to work as a one person Recreational Vehicle for State Park camping.
With some organization and additions the SUV RVing in the Honda works fantastic for camp outings.
I've been to many state parks throughout the United States and I must say I really enjoyed Frontenac. Great scenery, hiking trails, & great park service staff. This is just a little video from our April Outdoor Adventure.
Oh...we didn't see Pepie, the rumored Lake Pepin Monster.

Geospatial Forum: Dr. Karl Wegmann
Speaker: Dr. Karl Wegmann | Associate Professor of Geology, Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences | North Carolina State University
Presentation Title: Earth First! We'll Log the Other Planets Later: Digital Removal of Vegetation for Geologic Hazard Research
Abstract: In heavily forested environments, the digital deletion of vegetation through lidar remote sensing and the generation of bare-earth digital elevation models has enhanced our abilities to observe and quantify geologic hazards. In this forum Dr. Wegmann will present examples from studies in Washington, Colorado, and North Carolina where lidar datasets allow for improved identification and quantification of landslide, debris flow, and earthquake hazards. For example, the 2014 Oso debris avalanche in Washington State killed 43 people. Lidar-based digital elevation models reveal that pre-historic landforms with characteristics similar to the deadly 2014 event exist along the formerly glaciated valley bottoms of western Washington, suggesting that events like this may be more common than previously thought.

You Bet Your Life: Secret Word - Door / Heart / Water
Julius Henry Groucho Marx (October 2, 1890 -- August 19, 1977) was an American comedian and film and television star. He is known as a master of quick wit and widely considered one of the best comedians of the modern era. His rapid-fire, often impromptu delivery of innuendo-laden patter earned him many admirers and imitators. He made 13 feature films with his siblings the Marx Brothers, of whom he was the third-born. He also had a successful solo career, most notably as the host of the radio and television game show You Bet Your Life. His distinctive appearance, carried over from his days in vaudeville, included quirks such as an exaggerated stooped posture, glasses, cigar, and a thick greasepaint mustache and eyebrows. These exaggerated features resulted in the creation of one of the world's most ubiquitous and recognizable novelty disguises, known as Groucho glasses, a one-piece mask consisting of horn-rimmed glasses, large plastic nose, bushy eyebrows and mustache.
Groucho Marx was, and is, the most recognizable and well-known of the Marx Brothers. Groucho-like characters and references have appeared in popular culture both during and after his life, some aimed at audiences who may never have seen a Marx Brothers movie. Groucho's trademark eye glasses, nose, mustache, and cigar have become icons of comedy—glasses with fake noses and mustaches (referred to as Groucho glasses, nose-glasses, and other names) are sold by novelty and costume shops around the world.
Nat Perrin, close friend of Groucho Marx and writer of several Marx Brothers films, inspired John Astin's portrayal of Gomez Addams on the 1960s TV series The Addams Family with similarly thick mustache, eyebrows, sardonic remarks, backward logic, and ever-present cigar (pulled from his breast pocket already lit).
Alan Alda often vamped in the manner of Groucho on M*A*S*H. In one episode, Yankee Doodle Doctor, Hawkeye and Trapper put on a Marx Brothers act at the 4077, with Hawkeye playing Groucho and Trapper playing Harpo. In three other episodes, a character appeared who was named Captain Calvin Spalding (played by Loudon Wainwright III). Groucho's character in Animal Crackers was Captain Geoffrey T. Spaulding.
On many occasions, on the 1970s television sitcom All In The Family, Michael Stivic (Rob Reiner), would briefly imitate Groucho Marx and his mannerisms.
Two albums by British rock band Queen, A Night at the Opera (1975) and A Day at the Races (1976), are named after Marx Brothers films. In March 1977, Groucho invited Queen to visit him in his Los Angeles home; there they performed '39 a capella. A long-running ad campaign for Vlasic Pickles features an animated stork that imitates Groucho's mannerisms and voice. On the famous Hollywood Sign in California, one of the Os is dedicated to Groucho. Alice Cooper contributed over $27,000 to remodel the sign, in memory of his friend.
In 1982, Gabe Kaplan portrayed Marx in the film Groucho, in a one-man stage production. He also imitated Marx occasionally on his previous TV sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter.
Actor Frank Ferrante has performed as Groucho Marx on stage for more than two decades. He continues to tour under rights granted by the Marx family in a one-man show entitled An Evening With Groucho in theaters throughout the United States and Canada with piano accompanist Jim Furmston. In the late 1980s Ferrante starred as Groucho in the off-Broadway and London show Groucho: A Life in Revue penned by Groucho's son Arthur. Ferrante portrayed the comedian from age 15 to 85. The show was later filmed for PBS in 2001. Woody Allen's 1996 musical Everyone Says I Love You, in addition to being named for one of Groucho's signature songs, ends with a Groucho-themed New Year's Eve party in Paris, which some of the stars, including Allen and Goldie Hawn, attend in full Groucho costume. The highlight of the scene is an ensemble song-and-dance performance of Hooray for Captain Spaulding—done entirely in French.
In the last of the Tintin comics, Tintin and the Picaros, a balloon shaped like the face of Groucho could be seen in the Annual Carnival.
In the Italian horror comic Dylan Dog, the protagonist's sidekick is a Groucho impersonator whose character became his permanent personality.
The BBC remade the radio sitcom Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel, with contemporary actors playing the parts of the original cast. The series was repeated on digital radio station BBC7. Scottish playwright Louise Oliver wrote a play named Waiting For Groucho about Chico and Harpo waiting for Groucho to turn up for the filming of their last project together. This was performed by Glasgow theatre company Rhymes with Purple Productions at the Edinburgh Fringe and in Glasgow and Hamilton in 2007-08. Groucho was played by Scottish actor Frodo McDaniel.

Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling Bravo! in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.)
Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality.
Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely.
And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
