The famous hermitage of Sandipani Muni is dedicated to the tutor of the Lord Krishna. The Gomti Kund, a stepped water tank where Krishna supposedly summoned all the holy waters from pilgrim centres so that his old guru, Sandipani Muni, would not have to travel to these places is located near the Ashram.

Sandipani Rishi | Maharishi Sandipani Asharam | Ashram in Ujjain
Sandipani Ashram is the most ancient and one of the popular ashrams of Ujjain. It is named after the great Saint or Maharishi Sandipani. Maharishi Sandipani was the Guru of Lord Shri Krishna, Balram and Sudama. Within the Ashram there are temples which are dedicated to Lord Shiva and this temple is different from all other Lord Shiva’s temple because in this temple Nandi is standing in front of Lord Shiva.
Gomati kund is also there in the ashram which is the source of water supply to the ashram from ancient times. Footprints are also there in the ashram and it is believed that these footprints are of Bhagwan Shri Krishna.

Kumbh Mela Celebrations in Ujjain
The Shipra, also known as the Kshipra, is a river in Madhya Pradesh state of central India. The river rises in the ujjaini situated in Indore district, and flows north across the Malwa Plateau to join the Chambal River at the MP-Rajasthan boundary in Mandsaur district. It is one of the sacred rivers in Hinduism. The holy city of Ujjain is situated on its east bank. Every 12 years, the Sinhastha fair (Kumbh Mela) takes place on the city's elaborate riverside ghats, as do yearly celebrations of the river goddess Kshipra.There are hundreds of Hindu shrines along the banks of the river Shipra. Shipra is a perennial river. Earlier there used to be plenty of water in the river. Now the river stops flowing a couple of months after the monsoon.
With this reference, the word Shipra is used as a symbol of purity (of soul, emotions, body, etc.) or chastity or clarity. ujjain is in malwa region.Legend has it that once Lord Shiva went begging for alms, using the skull of Lord Brahma as the begging bowl. Nowhere in the three worlds did he manage to get any alms. Ultimately, he went to Vaikunth, or the abode of Lord Vishnu, and asked Lord Vishnu for alms. In return, Lord Vishnu showed Lord Shiva his index finger, which enraged the latter. Lord Shiva took out his trishul, or trident, and cut Lord Vishnu’s fingers. The Preserver’s fingers began to bleed profusely, and the blood accumulated in Brahma’s skull and soon overflowed from it. The flow became a stream and finally a river – the Shipra.
The Puranas, or ancient Hindu texts, also suggest that the Shipra originated from the heart of Varaha, Lord Vishnu’s incarnation as a boar. Also on the banks of the Shipra is Sage Sandipani’s ashram or hermitage where the blue god, Krishna, Lord Vishnu’s eighth incarnation, had studied.
The celebration of Kumbh Mela takes place at the four sacred places as per the position of Sun and Jupiter in different zodiac signs. Poorna Kumbh is held at Ujjain once in every 12 years when the zodiac sign Scorpio (Vrishchik Rashi) indicates the presence of Jupiter and Sun. Ujjain is located at the bank of Shipra River in western region of Madhya Pradesh and is seen as one of the most sacred places in India. The city is enriched with several religious shrines such as Bade Ganeshji Ka Mandir, Mahakaleshwar, Vikram Kirti Temple and many others. On the occasion of Kumbh Mela the divinity and spiritual aroma of Ujjain meets its highest peak when millions of pilgrims take dips and worship sacred River Shipra. Sages and devotees from every nook and corner attend the religious ceremony of Kumbh Mela to attain salvation and libration from the vicious cycle of birth-death-rebirth.Wikipedia

संदीपनी आश्रम उज्जैन के मंदिर के शहर से दो किलोमीटर दूर स्थित प्रसिद्ध पर्यटन स्थल है। इस जगह का पौराणिक महत्व है। ऐसा माना जाता है कि गुरु संदीपनी इस आश्रम का उपयोग श्रीकृष्ण, उनके मित्र सुदामा और भाई बलराम को पढ़ाने के लिए करते थे। इस जगह का उल्लेख महाभारत में किया गया है।अब इस आश्रम को एक मंदिर में परिवर्तित कर दिया गया हे जो गुरु संदीपनी को समर्पित है। इस आश्रम के पास एक पत्थर पर 1 से 100 तक गिनती लिखी है ओर ऐसा माना जाता है कि यह गिनती गुरु संदीपनी द्वारा लिखी गई थी। संदीपनी आश्रम के पास गोमती कुंड स्थित है जो कि एक छोटी पानी की टंकी है।ऐसा माना जाता है कि श्रीकृश्ण ने पवित्र केंद्रों के सारे पानी को गोमती कुंड की ओर मोड़ दिया था ताकि गुरु संदीपनी को आसानी से पवित्र जल मिलता रहे। गुरु संदीपनी के समय में इस आश्रम में युद्ध कलाएँ भी सिखाई जाती थी तथा दिन के अंत में आध्यात्मिक संरेखण ही मुख्य उद्येश्य था
