Driving sandown (Isle Of Wight) to portsmouth Via Fishbourne (Ferry)
Travelling around the Isle of Wight couldn’t be easier, with a range of options available to help you cover every inch of the 23 x 13 miles of the Island!
By Foot
There are over 500 miles of public rights of way to explore on the Island, and although it isn’t the fastest way to get around it undoubtedly gives the best views!
Put your best foot forward and explore some of England’s most spectacular coastal paths and seascapes, you’re never far from a secret cove or enchanting village!
By Bike
The Isle of Wight was recently voted one of the world’s top cycling destinations by Lonely Planet, and an excellent network of cycleways and rail trails links up much of the Island.
It is also becoming a great place for a cycling holiday, with Bicycle Island presenting some great trail ideas, cycle hire and help to get you around.
By Bus
You will find the main Isle of Wight bus service, operated by Southern Vectis, refreshingly visible almost everywhere you go.
Regular buses run between the main towns and resorts until very late, with services to more rural areas operating throughout the day.
There are also open-top “Breezer” tours, and a “hop on, hop off” Island Coaster service which has the capacity to carry bikes.
By Train
The Island Line train service operates from Ryde Pierhead round the east coast of the Island, down through to Shanklin – directly linking with both Ryde passenger ferry services, providing a through service from London Waterloo.
There is also a bus link to the train which carries passengers from Shanklin through to Ventnor.
By Car
Vehicle ferry services operate from Lymington to Yarmouth, Southampton to East Cowes and Portsmouth to Fishbourne.
Isle of Wight car ferry prices vary. In winter you might pay as little as £35 or £40 to take a car and up to 6 or 7 passengers – potentially just £5 per person return.
Most summer visitors pay somewhere around £100, although peak fares occasionally reach nearly £200 during school holidays. There are other factors too - a day return is cheaper than a week's holiday on the Isle of Wight whilst long vans or motorhomes cost more than cars.
The road network across the Isle of Wight is well signposted and many have outstanding natural views, however a number of Island roads are quite narrow, so take care when driving and be aware of other users.

Secret Fairy Tale Shoe House of the Undercliff - Isle of Wight
An unexpected find at the bottom of the cliffs between Ventnor and St Catherine's.
Please subscribe for more:
Discovered early one morning back in the Summer when I was climbing around the Undercliff.
The site included a large shoe house similar in design to the one in Blackgang Chine and a Children's castle, I have no idea how long this has been here of when it was built.

Small Hovercraft - A Few Pointers
When choosing a hover type vehicle for race purposes its pretty obvious that going fast is the primary need. That signifies that the vehicle should be as light as it can be, which is normally managed by constructing the vehicle from GRP (Fibre Glass) - ideal for the all important power to weight ratio, but not so great for saef use. Another fact is hovercraft designed for racing are predominantly designed for land use. Glass fiber isn't at all a good choice for recreational and commercial purposes, as fiber glass is too easily split and is expensive to make good afterwards. A wire shroud enclosing the fan may throttle the airflow, compromising safety in the interests of a speedier vehicle. The design philosophy for our Hovercraft is simply this - safety is number 1 and speed is second.
DIY fans might prefer to construct one for themselves, but this approach leaves some important issues about safety and also efficiency. It can take hundreds of hours to construct a self-build, just to realize that it doesn't do what you designed it to do. The Hov Pod construction removes the guess from design - why repeat the process when conceiving and building your personal hovercraft?
Easily the largest category of users are folks who just want to have fun! Even when you buy a hovercraft just for fun, it needs to be safe above all, have a good all round performance and be child's play to operate. This Hovercraft isn't for you if you are looking for the speediest craft on the market, but if your priority is to have maximum fun in complete safety, it's just right for you. We don’t cut any corners when it comes to craftmanship. Look at important features of our craft such as fixtures in stainless steel, necessary to combat the acid effects of sea water - the best quality electrical accessories guarantee perfect operation.
It Isn't A Fact That All Small Hovercraft Are Identical.
Incredibly, there exist some hovercraft manufacturers that offer so-called new vehicles with used engine units. Some sell smal hovercraft that dip the bow into the water (known as 'plow in') and stop dead with possibly serious consequences. Other hover craft aren't buoyant enough and have difficulty floating! Many personal leisure craft won't lift off from water (good idea to pack a paddle or two). If the hovercraft uses a one piece skirt then repairs are likely to be expensive. Fiber glass hulls are prone to splitting and leaking, while others can be tough to steer and operate.
Engine Units.
HovPod Hovercraft can be bought with either of two or four petrol engines. We fit very proven highly efficient Rotax (2 stroke engines) or Weber 120 Turbo (4 sroke). These engine assemblies are covered by a special cover that protects them from the environment but the engine can be accessed within seconds.
The Hov Pod engines go through rigorous tests for long time periods in harsh marine environents in hot climates. The 4 stroke motor weighs more than the two stroke, but are less noisy, and with lower levels of exhaust emissions, are cheaper to run, and can go for longer distances per fuel tank.
Which is best – one engine or two?
Many hovercraft have 2 engines, the first one for thrust, one for vertical lift. Hov Pod hovercrafts feature only one engine for forward motion and vertical lift; the reason is that it obviously easier and much safer to instal a single array of controls, its more cost effective to service a single unit, and its quieter with just one. Forward thrust engines are often installed forward of the pilot – wow! Imagine the smelly emissions and noise surrounding everyone, and the first wave you hit might stop the motor, which will cause lift failure. Forward positioned lift engine hovercraft are predominantly front end heavy, so increases the chance of dipping into the water.
We specifically created the Hov Pod with no gearbox assembly - this allows us position our engine units lower down in the hovercraft, which means a low center of gravity, a feature intended to reduce the chances of rolling (we’ve witnessed some other craft physically turn all the way over during a simple low speed turn), and giving a lot more control functionality. We additionally position the engine at a lower level to ensure there's no disturbance in the air flow to the propeller; better airflow results in better efficiency. [Naturally, we only install brand new engine units, whereas some supposedly new small hovercraft have been marketed with used engines.
