Sandstone Falls, Summers, West Virginia, United States
Sandstone Falls, West Virginia
The New River drops approximately 15 feet at Sandstone Falls, about 10 miles north of the town of Hinton, West Virginia. Sandstone Falls is generally considered the beginning of the New River Gorge. It is not a single waterfall, but rather a series of cascades and rapids that span the full width of the river along several natural channels and islands. The falls are part of the New River Gorge National River within the National Park Service. Thanks for watching!

I made this trip in August-September 2017. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Sandstone Falls marks the transition zone of the New River from a broad river of large bottomlands, to a narrow mountain river roaring through a deep boulder strewn V- shaped gorge.
I have just a few flights with the Phantom and it is a long flight to the falls. The large section was about a 700 to 800 feet flight up river. I have a kumba cam FPV system but I don't trust myself yet to fly by it. I will re fly the falls again when we get some good weather and when I am more comfortable in flying.

This is a view of Sandstone falls from the view that is opposite side of the road to hinton. This had a board walk that would actually be great for handicapped in wheel chairs, but be warned, no restrooms were in this spot so plan accordingly
