Avatar Mountain & Wulingyuan Scenic Area, Zhangjiajie, China in 4K Ultra HD
One of the most stunning and beautiful places in the world, the Wulingyuan Scenic Area in China's Hunan Province has more than 3,000 sandstone pillars and peaks, some higher than 200 meters/660 feet. Its amazing views became inspiration for the Avatar movie and it is on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The Wulingyuan Scenic Area includess 4 parts, all covered in the video: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxi Valley Nature Reserve, Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve and the Yangjiajie Scenic Area.

China Danxia Landform...Paint palate of God
China Danxia is the name given in China to landscapes developed on continental red terrigenous sedimentary beds influenced by endogenous forces (including uplift) and exogenous forces (including weathering and erosion). The inscribed site comprises six areas found in the sub-tropical zone of south-west China.
They are characterized by spectacular red cliffs and a range of erosional landforms, including dramatic natural pillars, towers, ravines, valleys and waterfalls. These rugged landscapes have helped to conserve sub-tropical broad-leaved evergreen forests, and host many species of flora and fauna, about 400 of which are considered rare or threatened.
It must be explained that Danxia is not a place, but the name of a type of landscape found in China, characterized by prominent boulders and steep cliffs. It is similar to karst rocks, but formed by layers of conglomerate instead of compact blocks of rock. (please see my slide show, Guilin).
China Danxia is a serial property comprising six component parts (Chishui, Taining, Langshan, Danxiashan, Longhushan, and Jianglangshan) found in the sub-tropical zone of south-eastern China within approximately 1700 km crescent shaped arc from Guizhou Province in the west to Zhejiang Province in the east.
China Danxia is an impressive and unique landscape of great natural beauty. The reddish conglomerate and sandstone that form this landscape of exceptional natural beauty have been shaped into spectacular peaks, pillars, cliffs and imposing gorges. Together with the contrasting forests, winding rivers and majestic waterfalls, China Danxia presents a significant natural phenomenon.
These incredible landscapes look as if they have been painted in the sweeping pastel brush strokes of an impressionistic artwork.
The landform is a unique type of petrographic geomorphology which is found only in China which consists of red-colored sandstones and conglomerates of largely Cretaceous age.
Formed of layers of reddish sandstone, the terrain has over time been eroded into a series of mountains surrounded by curvaceous cliffs and unusual rock formations.
The scenic area is popular among tourists, who come to enjoy scenic walks and boat rides through the area, which is also home to a number of temples.
The World Heritage Committee decided to include China Danxia Landform in the World Heritage List at its 34th meeting held in Brasilia, capital of Brazil, on August 1, 2010.
In typically Chinese style, the signage local to the rock formations pictured now boast of it as a 'world famous UNESCO geopark of China'.
The China Danxia world heritage site in fact covers a range of landscapes in Southern China, of which Mount Daxia in Guangdong is only the most famous.
The other five are: Mount Langshan and Mount Wanfoshan, Hunan Province; Taining and Guanzhoushan, Fujian Province; Mount Longhu and Guifeng, Jiangxi Province; Mount Chishui, Guizhou Province; and Fangyan and Mount Jianglang, Zhejiang Province.
These remarkable pictures show the actual scenery of Danxia Landform at Nantaizi village of Nijiaying town, in Linzhe county of Zhangye, Gansu province of China.
While the photos are certainly incredible, there could be some slight photo manipulation going on to make the colors pop a bit more than they would naturally. Still, the mountains are amazing.

Rainbow Mountains Zhangye Danxia (China) – most colorful places on Earth
Gansu Province in China is known as home to the eye candy of Zhangye – an incredible lunar-like landscape, which amazes thousands of visitors with its multitude of red, orange and yellow-hued colors. Many visitors and tourists compare Zhangye Danxia Landform to an artwork, created by the master, who spared no colors. In this case the master is Mother Nature.
Geological evidence shows that the Zhangye's Danxia landscape took years to form, as the erosion gradually gnawed at red sandstone, resulting in the formation of isolated peaks and steep outcrops.
The erosion, alongside the desert conditions and freeze-thaw peeling created unusually colorful appearance of the Zhangye Danxia landscape (no wonder that in some tourist guides they are mentioned as the Chinese Rainbow Mountains). All in all, the Gansu Province in China is one of the best places to visit, if you would like to experience the true explosion of natural color.

In the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, in China, are found many huge quartz-sandstone pillars, which actually have inspired the creation of Avatar's Hallelujah Mountains. The peak forest was developed in Devonian Taiyunguan and Huangjiadeng formations, with a distribution area of 86km2. It is a world-rare and unique landform formed in a special tectonic position and under particular conditions of neotectonism and exogenous processes. More than 3,000 rock peaks aloft within the area, of which 1,000 peaks exceed 200m in height, and Jinbianyan exceeds even 350m. The individual geometry includes mesa, platform, peak wall, peak cluster, peak forest, crosscut, stone door, natural bridge and valley, etc. The geopark is centralized by its sandstone peak forest unparalleled in the world, lined with karst landscape, and has many geological heritages such as shaped geological sections, special fossil relic. These constitute a geomorphic assembly of sandstone peak forest with particular characteristics.

Zhangjiajie Sandstone Peak Forest Geological Park is located in Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province, with a total area of 3,600 square kilometers. It consists of four major scenic spots, Zhangjiajie, Suoxi, Tianzishan and Yangjiajie, and Huanglongdong. Moab Cliff Flying
Wall Street is a huge line of 500 foot cliffs along the Colorado River just west of Moab, Utah, popular with climbers because you can belay from your tailgate. If you want to shoot videos like these yourself, I've included some helpful links below.
I fly a DJI Mavic Pro drone with a 4K gimbled, stabilized camera and joy stick controller. The Mavic Pro is a highly stable aircraft, folds up into a small carrying case for easy travel, and has a flight time of about 20 minutes per flight battery. Here's an Amazon link:
I also use the DJI Goggles in bright sunlight to avoid flying into cliffs when the cell phone gets washed out in the intense desert glare. The Mavic Pro transmits a live image stream not only to your cell phone, but to the goggles as well. Because the goggles fit snugly and block out the flood of desert light, you can clearly see where you are flying, looking our of the drone's camera. It's quite the experience. I carry and protect the drone with a wonderful Pelican case, with foam cutouts for the drone, controller, batteries, and even an iPad, should you use one.
I shoot a ton of clips of 15 seconds to several minutes while I travel. The more you shoot the better, so play around and try lots of angles and different drone motions. Then, when I get home, I'll move the clips from the drone's micro SD card to my computer, and use Cyberlink Powerdirector to edit them into a movie, overlay music and/or voice, and produce a 4K video.
When I upload the video to Youtube, Youtube will automatically create and store all the various lower bit rate copies of the video.
